The Reformer

Changing the system from inside it, principle turned into change.

Andy Haldane fits The Reformer archetype cleanly. As the Bank of England's Chief Economist he built a reputation for challenging orthodoxy from inside the institution, arguing for simpler regulation, questioning the profession's forecasting failures after the financial crisis, and pushing economics to engage with ordinary citizens through regional visits and community listening exercises.

Thank you, Giles. Great question, as ever. So on that, I mean, I wouldn't lay the blame for the failure to leveling up at any one policy intervention, certainly not one over the last 10 years. The truth is it's a problem that has worsened over successive governments and successive policy frameworks, as we've said earlier on.

Engine, Northern Powerhouse Partnership, there are examples of the joining of hands across administrative boundaries in a way that better match the economic cluster, if you like, as distinct from the administrative cluster. There will be those messy overlaps in the fullness of time. They may become a little bit less messy.

The missions that could plausibly equalized, yes, there are. Because guess what? There are some huge benefits of living in some of those towns or villages or more rural retreats that aren't measured in terms of pure productivity and pay, but are measured in terms of lifestyle and green splace and green spaces and leisure facilities.

I mean, that dimens Are more To people's life satisfaction. We know in both of those cases, give or take, we have had 70 years of those disparities widening between places over time. And the mission we set ourselves, in both of those two cases, is to turn the tide. To turn those divergent forces into convergent forces.
