Andy Jassy fits The Architect archetype because his signature achievement is building durable systems rather than chasing spectacle. He led Amazon Web Services from an internal experiment into the backbone of the modern internet, a business constructed methodically over nearly two decades through relentless attention to infrastructure, pricing mechanics, and customer obsession.
“I'm sure we don't prefer it, but at the same time, it's not a big distraction internally. You know, we were really early on at Amazon. If you look, for instance, at our stock, it has always been very up and down. And Jeff used to say constantly, you just can't be distracted by what's happening in the stock market at any one time.”
“In my opinion, we're pretty early in this space right now. And I don't think they're going to be in the infrastructure technology space. I don't think they're going to be 25 winners because scale really matters. Right. But there's not going to be one.”
“Well, you know, I think if you want to have a public sector business with, you know, we have about 5,000 government agencies worldwide using AWS and about 10,000 academic institutions and about 25,000 nonprofits. You have to provide enough value that changes the equation for what these organizations can do for their constituents.”
