People, composure and the difficult conversation held well.
Andy Street is the Mayor of the West Midlands, known for his cross-party approach and focus on regional advocacy. This interview highlights his ability to navigate complex political landscapes while fostering collaboration and trust among diverse stakeholders.
“It does become harder for sure, and obviously I've had a degree of difference on issues with people, but I think you have to come back, as Andy Streets said earlier, to the role. When I was elected in 2017 and then again in 2021, I was very conscious that people beyond traditional Labour voters had given me their support.”
“And I would agree, 2002 was massive for Manchester, and obviously it created the infrastructure that supports Manchester City and everything that's grown in that part of East Manchester, the transformation there is just phenomenal. People couldn't recognise what was there before.”
“Into Westminster. The thing I would answer your question with Rory, if you were to ask me what's the big sort of change, radical change the country needs, we should, in my view, follow the German example of a written constitution in which there is a basic law.”
“And then I kind of made my way up a little bit, as you might remember. And there was a big moment in my life, and I've got to be honest about it, it was going as culture secretary to Anfield on the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. And I had been, as you know, at the other semi-final on that day in 1989.”
