The Visionary
The future, and what is barely possible, reads round the next corner.
Benjamin Clymer reads as The Visionary because he did not enter an existing market so much as construct one. Hodinkee democratised horological knowledge before a mainstream audience existed for it, then invented the watch industry's first authorised online retail model, and later extended into insurance, a novel category for the asset class entirely.
“The Oris Kermit was a fun one. And I think echoing what Jeff said, it was my first time there because my daughter was born last year and then COVID, so three years. So it had been four years since I was in Switzerland. And you've gone to ones before. Oh, for 15, 20 years, yeah.”
“So I said, who I went to Columbia with Will, who's still with us. I said, actually, I got a video guy right here. And so we went, we were on Varick Street. We went over to a place called Little Prince, which is a little cafe there on Spring, or Prince rather. And we walked in and we said, hey, I got John Mayer coming here in 20 minutes.”
“Like, I love this stuff in such a sincere way. I want to basically share what I'm learning to as many people as possible. And then people can read it or not. They can comment or not. That's okay. And I think that is really what made us different from everyone else. And we did it in a way that was stylized.”
“That was his daily driver. That and a gold Rolex date as well, which now my father has. And it was just something so impactful to me. And he was really my hero.”
