The Persian Gulf War. Yeah, yeah. That was a really odd thing where I went over there with one assignment and then it ended up morphing into something else. I was supposed to go over for a couple of weeks and write short features about troops who were from cities where Knight Ritter had papers.

Yeah, well, I mean, I had gotten more and more into food, I think, because I was in Italy. And I'd become a sort of someone people would come to for Rome restaurant recommendations. And I kind of realized that in a very just kind of organic way, I'd become something of a restaurant maven.

Yes, it was a scary experience, I'll tell you, because I remember my cavalry unit ended up not seeing any action, but it was supposed to be one of the first to engage the then believed to be fearsome Iraqi Republican guard. I think they were called, I can't even remember. And I remember being called into a briefing.

No, no, I had never thought I would be, I love writing about politics now. And it's been one of the kind of nicest things that's happened. It was never something that was in my sights. Back then, less than now, I mean, now like all young reporters I meet want to be on the trail. They want to be political reporters.
