“And that's what made me move as emotionally as I did with my endorsement. When she said that she needed to hear it and the community needed to hear from me. And I talked to a few people before I left Columbia that evening. And sure enough, they were waiting to hear something from me.”
“So that just stuck up a great relationship. And so I got really deeply involved in Charleston politics. And so I ran for the state legislature a year later, won the Democratic primary, but I had run as an insurgent. And therefore, I did not have the support for the powers that did.”
“There was a state senator. He still lives. He's a neighbor of mine, Kate Patterson, took to the floor of the house one day before he went to the Senate and spoke out against the Confederate flag flying on top of the State House. And all hell broke Lewis. His life was threatened. In fact, a guy got arrested and spent time for threatening.”
“I'm very concerned about that and I'm extremely concerned about that. That's why I have been yelling and I'm going to yell even louder going forward that we need to make October election month. I think that some people will start voting around mid-September. Some states will start that.”
