The Visionary
The future, and what is barely possible, reads round the next corner.
Joe Lonsdale qualifies as a Visionary by planting flags in contested territory before institutions are ready to follow. Co-founding Palantir was a bet that governments and militaries across forty-plus countries would eventually accept data-driven decision infrastructure.
“Very important things here. And then the one other thing I'll say, Harry, is the Renaissance and biology, probably the most important trend going on in our space right now. And UCSF, Berkeley, Stanford, and an ecosystem around here is just probably going to be really strong there for the next 10 years.”
“Actually, it's interesting. So on the build side, I am currently a single decision maker for what we do for build, because I think that's important, building is my entrepreneurial work with the firm. On the investment side, I am not the single decision maker. We have a full investment committee. We vote.”
“And I ultimately have the final decision if we go ahead with build projects or not. So it kind of gets rid of any politics there for me anyway. And I think it'd be harder to do this in a partnership because, you know, people do get upside on things they help build.”
“80%. And so at that point, it's not my job to be trying to win that series B anymore. That's too expensive for what we do. And obviously you can't know these things for sure, but I think you have to use your judgment that, okay, right now this part of the market's really popular. There's money moving into it.”
