Mark Delaney
The Steward
Legacy, values and the long now, leadership as care and continuity.
Mark Delaney presents as a quintessential Steward, having spent over two decades safeguarding the retirement savings of 3.4 million predominantly modest-income Australians. His leadership is defined by a fiduciary orientation that runs deeper than performance metrics. Delaney consistently frames investment decisions through the lens of member outcomes, cost discipline, and long-term compounding rather than short-term headline returns.
“If you had a bad time, I went out five drinks to think that's going to solve the problem. It just doesn't work. Maybe I've got a bit older and no one dies. The truth is no one dies. And if you relax, you'll actually be better than if you get stressed. So no one dies and you just need to live with it. I'm told that you're a keen surfer.”
“And so we've had a long history of being active in asset allocation on roughly a one to a three year horizon, using a framework which has moved around over Years, but basically reflects two levers. The first one being how you see the outlook is the economic outlook, how policy is going and whatever, and then what does value tell you?”
“In an aggregate sense, we think that probably the low interest rates will be good for the market as long as you don't have a recession. And so therefore we've been inclined to try and nibble away at this pullbacks and just buy a little bit more. Now, in the equity world, you can go active, you can go passive. I'm imagining you do both.”
