Mike Bibby is The Operator, a leader who prizes process over recognition. At Shadow Mountain High School he installed film study, shooting-around classes, and opponent-specific defensive schemes, running the program, in his words, like a college one.
“I coached my son since he was nine. My thing was to just make sure these kids get taught the right way — regardless if he's my son or not, they're gonna make the right play.”
“We watched film, we have shooting around, classes — if you're messing up in class you gotta go to study hall before practice. We're the only public school to ever play in the Geico National Championship.”
“I took a different role. I took like a Vlade Divac role going to Atlanta. I was fine with that — I knew I didn't have much time left, and my thing was just trying to make these guys have fun playing basketball.”
