He said, why is that? I said communication with satellites sends ideas into space, ideas last longer than people. I said, this is very, very important, and we can beat the Russians. And we did. And I was very proud of that. And today communication satellites have changed the world, far beyond anything we anticipated.

This year I was given the highest award by PBS at their annual convention and I saw 350 public television stations. And when I went to the FCC, there were, I think, six or seven. So it's been a marvelous success. The biggest thing I did in some ways was the communication satellite program.

Ah, he had some people around him, I think, who were a good influence. I kidded Bob once. He came to Chicago one day to give a speech about a new book he had written. And I had heard this joke before, so I pulled it on him.

I do. Yes, years ago there was something called the Fairness Doctrine, which the FCC enforced which required that first the broadcasters should deal with controversial issues, but second that they should present all points of view. This was regarded as censorship by some critics, and later the courts have been very unhappy with it.
