Roberto Italia
The Steward
Legacy, values and the long now, leadership as care and continuity.
Roberto Italia embodies The Steward archetype through his deliberate, long-horizon approach to mission-led brand building on behalf of a permanent capital family office. Throughout the interview, Italia frames Verlinvest's edge not as financial engineering but as patient, values-aligned partnership with founders.
“Well, it was Joseph Schuberta who said profit is the payment you get when you take advantage of change. And it seems like you're doing a lot of that. I've got some more general questions for you, if I may. Which brand out there across any field would you say you admire most?”
“This is an exciting question because this is what takes our time nowadays. We're seeing a lot of potential for brands that have not moved recently as fast as they could have in our mind. To such brands we think can contribute a lot. We are engaging with a number of such entrepreneurs with Multi was the same story.”
“And the lesson I've learned over the years is that anybody in my position should not underestimate how life circumstances may affect any leader. You really have to be close to your leaders, engage with them, and make sure that you engage with them specifically when there are certain changes.”
“So at what point and did you then have to bring others in because there are limits on the size of your investment? Rather quickly, the way we started it out, we felt that there was very meaningful opportunities in markets we knew very well. Those were clearly Europe and the United States.”
