“Also, because when I was in Congress, we did pass a border supplemental with Trump in the White House at the time. And it was one of the bigger political fights. I think I was engaged in in my time in Washington.”
“I did. And so America in the late 70s and 80s really didn't want to remember or have any reminders of the Vietnam War. And so obviously being a Vietnamese person for some people, it was a painful reminder of a time that they could put out of their minds. And I often remembered people would say to me, So where are you from?”
“My mom, I think they didn't really have a whole lot of good choices. She had to help my brother get to shore. So, you know, and I think you have to imagine how awful things must have been for them to have taken that kind of risk with, you know, small children. I think I have incredible amounts of empathy when I see migrants and refugees.”
“And the incumbent took a check from the NRA just a couple days after the shooting happened. And so I thought to myself, well, why don't I run? And I don't think, I'm not sure I thought I could win, but I felt like the community deserved an opportunity to have a debate about the issues that mattered to them.”
