The Disruptor
Contrarian and drawn to the edge; challenges the settled answer.
Ted Sarandos reads as The Disruptor because he rewired an entire industry from the inside, arriving not as a technologist but as a video store clerk who understood what audiences actually wanted. As Netflix co-chief executive, he bet on original content at massive scale before the economics were proven and greenlit globally diverse programming while Hollywood was still thinking locally.
“So, in the US, you will be on the phone with them negotiating, listening to them negotiate the deal. The agents, their assistants are on the phones. They're actually listening to the calls and listening to the details of deals that otherwise are just trying to scrape, dig through the trash to read the turn of contracts.”
“I think a lot of you have to remember a lot of the things, many things we passed on go on to be hit somewhere else. Not like you get like your track record is all that clean. Now, I remember a lot of those shows didn't turn out to be the show that was being pitched either. So some of that goes on.”
“Yeah. I think if our common references as a culture are memes, That's depressing their throwaway because they're throwaway. You know what I mean? You wouldn't know people of a certain age don't even know the things that you and I were talking about tonight.”
“So, and I think it doesn't, it may not work at every company that does what we do even because I feel like the company is inherently free of politics. All the things in the culture deck. Greg and I wouldn't backstab each other in the back for this job. We both want this thing to work forever the same way I didn't want Reed to leave.”
