They were daily and the hostility, you know, the interesting thing to go from Omaha, deeply segregated city where there's no relationship between the blacks and the whites down to the south where there was some relationship. Maids were in the homes. People were doing the maintenance lawn work around the houses and that kind of thing.

Beyond exhilarating, I got to know both sides well. I'm so in touch. We've talked about this with Stu Spencer, who is the genius behind the Reagan campaign and organizing it. Spencer Roberts was the name of the firm.

I was hugely astonishing not only that, I was the only correspondent in the world with live satellite capacity that night. Not even the Germans were able to do what we did. Certainly CBS and ABC didn't do it at that point, and I don't remember, I think CNN was going, but it didn't have satellite capacity then either.

Well, because everybody went to sleep that Dewey was going to win that election. Out in South Carolina, they didn't see the little guy with the mustaches, their salvation. And I was eight years old, and it was the beginning of the mother and I would talk about politics from that time on, about what was going on in the world.
