“Beyond his professional accomplishments, Nick was a cherished son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. I have fond memories of many hours around the Trandos family dining room table, where we regularly put the world to rights. His wife, Sophie, his soulmate and constant support, and their children, Jim, Tanya, Dixie and Arthur, embody the strong family values that Nick treasured. His hearty laughs, warm hugs and wise counsel will be sorely missed but forever remembered. The community has truly lost a treasure in Nick Trandos. Likewise, we mourn the passing of Bill Meredith, a quiet achiever with a big heart whose presence was felt far and wide. Bill was a founding member and president of the Wanneroo Business Association. “Building on the success of the first stage, the second stage, ECU Health Centre Yanchep West, is under construction, with plans to open by mid-2026. This expansion will significantly increase the precinct's ability to meet the healthcare demands of our growing population. Importantly, this health precinct will be located within walking distance of the Yanchep Central Shopping Centre and will be serviced by bus routes. This location will make it easy for people to access the services they need without long and difficult journeys. The Yanchep Medicare urgent health clinic and the ECU Health Centre precinct represent a forward-thinking healthcare strategy for this region. They offer both immediate urgent care solutions and long-term primary care services.”
“Together, these partners have committed $20.7 million to establish a multipurpose primary care centre. This centre will also support important clinical training and health research activities. The ECU Health Centre in Yanchep will feature two co-located integrated health facilities designed to meet the current and future healthcare needs of the expanding Yanchep community. Stage 1 of this precinct is ECU Health Centre Yanchep East, which opened in August 2024. The centre provides a wide range of primary care and mental health services and not only increases access to quality health care but also builds the health workforce by offering training opportunities to students and staff in the local community.”
“By providing local access to these services, we can improve timely care and reduce waiting times across the health system. Yanchep and the surrounding suburbs are among the fastest-growing corridors in Western Australia. The population in this corridor is expected to grow by over 400 per cent by 2046, which is significant. This rapid growth places increased demand on existing healthcare infrastructure, and the new Yanchep Medicare urgent care clinic is designed to meet this growing demand, ensuring that families in this area will have better access to urgent health services nearby. The Edith Cowan University Health Centre precinct in Yanchep continues to show excellent progress. The advancement is thanks to a strong partnership between the Australian federal government, the Western Australian government and Edith Cowan University.”
“I rise to give a detailed update on several very important healthcare projects taking place in Yanchep in my electorate of Pearce in Western Australia. These projects will make a genuine and lasting difference to the lives of the people in my local community. Firstly, I am very pleased to report that the Yanchep Medicare urgent care clinic is progressing well. This clinic was a major commitment at the 2025 federal election and it is on track to open before the end of this financial year. The clinic will be bulk-billed and available for walk-in patients who need urgent care. This clinic will reduce the pressure on emergency departments. Many people in our community often visit hospitals with conditions that can be treated in an urgent care setting.”

“On a broader scale, the Albanese Labor government has achieved significant milestones across Australia, including strengthening Medicare, reducing the cost of PBS medicines, increasing the minimum wage, giving every taxpayer a tax cut, introducing fee-free TAFE, creating more jobs, adding two weeks to paid parental leave, ensuring every shopper gets a better deal at the checkout, helping more Australians own their own home, helping secure a future made in Australia and giving every household a combined $700 off their power bill with a $150 rebate from 1 July. “This clinic provides convenient bulk-billed medical care seven days a week, easing pressure on the Joondalup Health Campus. Furthermore, we have successfully petitioned for and plan to establish another Medicare urgent care clinic in Yanchep. This commitment demonstrates our intent to provide quality healthcare services for the benefit of the Pearce community. We have also invested in community infrastructure, including the extension of freeway to Romeo Road and the train line to Yanchep, with two additional stations at Alkimos and Eglinton that opened last year. The Albanese Labor government has contributed $30 million to the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre, which will provide a fantastic help for recreation learning, will create jobs and will stimulate economic growth in our region.”

“In addition to convenience and cost-effectiveness, Medicare urgent care clinics provide a broad range of services. They can manage everything from sprains and fractures to infections and asthma attacks. Many clinics are equipped with onsite laboratories and pharmacies, allowing patients to receive comprehensive care in one location. This is the kind of service and efficiency we need in Yanchep. I was very pleased to successfully advocate for the Medicare urgent care clinic in Clarkson, which has clearly demonstrated that urgent care clinics alleviate pressure on our hospital emergency departments. That was done shortly after I was elected to this position in 2022. By offering an alternative for non-emergency situations, we can ensure that our emergency rooms remain available for those who truly require critical care.”
“By providing urgent care services now, we can alleviate the pressure on existing healthcare facilities—bearing in mind the time it would take to construct a hospital. I also worked diligently with Professor Cobie Rudd from the Edith Cowan University as we identified the important need for additional local medical facilities. The ECU Health Centre in Yanchep East was established and opened in August last year. I look forward to turning the sod for the next stage next week on 20 February 2025. We must also consider the financial implications of healthcare access. Many families face unexpected medical expenses that strain their budget. The Medicare urgent care clinics bulk-bill, making them a more affordable option for many residents.”
“Living in the northern suburbs of Perth and having to travel the long distance daily to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth for my cancer treatment, I identified the need for local treatment options and played an intrinsic part in establishing Shenton House in Joondalup with Sue Dash, a local resident, business owner and fellow cancer survivor, as well as our oncologist, Dr Nigel Spry. This centre now provides vital imaging and oncology services in support of patients in the northern suburbs and has become a local beacon of hope for many. Establishing an urgent care clinic will work in parallel with the need for a hospital in Yanchep. It is an essential first step. This clinic would serve as a critical bridge in our healthcare system, addressing immediate medical needs while planning for a future hospital.”

“Today, I would like to address a need in my community of Yanchep in the federal seat of Pearce, and that is the establishment of a Medicare urgent care clinic. As our population is expected to double by 2030, the demand for accessible health care services is becoming increasingly urgent. Currently, Yanchep residents face long travel times to access essential medical services. The nearest facilities often require a lengthy journey, which can be particularly challenging for families with young children or elderly members. An urgent care clinic would provide immediate care for non-life-threatening conditions without the need for an appointment. This means that, when a child has a fever or an adult has anything from a minor injury to something a bit more serious, they can receive timely treatment close to home.”

It is my honour to recognise Brother Thomas Oliver Pickett, affectionately known as Olly, who has been awarded 2025 Senior Australian of the Year. Olly's journey is inspiring. The co-founder of Wheelchairs For Kids, which is based in my electorate of Pearce, he has dedicated nearly three decades to ensuring that children with disabilities get mobility and independence. His incredible efforts have provided over 61,000 custom-built wheelchairs to children in more than 80 countries—a remarkable achievement that reflects his vision and determination. Olly's work transcends wheelchair provision.”
