The fear is that Hamas is going to apply the Hezbollah model: separation between administration and military wing. The suspicion is sustained by the fact that it has said nothing about the future of the military wing. On the other hand, the Board of Peace is a lost case – it has proved to be an ineffective, slow institution. So I think these things can work in this moment. It is a very critical moment – new protagonists, new power, new country. Europe, especially, should act very fast and insert itself into this process.”

Dunque, forse la guerra degli USA non è stata fatta violando le leggi internazionali? Anche di questo non abbiamo risposta.”
“Madam President, dear colleagues, today in Hong Kong, a long‑time publisher and pro-democracy activist, Jimmy Lai, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, at the age of 70. For an old man, this amounts to a death sentence. May I remind you that just last month, on 22 January, this plenary adopted a resolution on this important case. I believe it is essential to reiterate that the sentence constitutes a clear violation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which remain in force in Hong Kong. At a crucial moment when we are considering reopening relations with China after seven years, I think this case must not be considered closed. Our own dignity is also at stake here. 1-0038-0000”

Maybe we have been like this, but I think things are changing. On Iran, it seems to me that we have reacted swiftly. So this is the right moment for making our points: first, strong restrictive sanctions to isolate the regime; second, show solidarity on the part of the EU with the brave people of Iran by creating an international mechanism that investigates and makes accountable the human rights violations. For the first time Europe is speaking, but is speaking not of rearmament but is starting from defence. Defence, I want to remember here, is a constitutional citizen right through almost all the countries in Europe. Second, the dossier affirms that a truly common defence would be effective only if starts from the creation of a European technological unit and the development of a European defence, technological and industrial base. “Signora Presidente, onorevoli colleghi, parlerò intanto del perché bisogna in questo momento difendere i palestinesi. La prima ragione è che sono un popolo vessato dal '48 e la loro sofferenza continua a riprodurre tragedie. La seconda ragione è che la guerra non si sta rivelando una soluzione nemmeno per Israele: dopo due anni di applicazione di tutto il suo potere militare in un piccolo territorio, il governo di Israele continua a sostenere di non essere riuscito a neutralizzare Hamas. Questa è una sconfitta. La pace, anche per Israele, deve prendere un'altra strada, che è quella che ci indicano e ci suggeriscono i parenti degli ostaggi riservisti e le migliaia di cittadini che, in questi anni e tuttora, sfilano contro Netanyahu.”
“Tutta la strategia americana, a cominciare dal 1990, cioè dalla prima guerra in Iraq, è stato il fallimento dei tentativi di cambi di regime – ogni cambio di regime – semplicemente perché nemmeno grandi potenze come gli USA, o regionali come Israele, hanno forze e uomini a sufficienza per poterlo fare. A una cena alla Casa Bianca ha parlato dei palestinesi, dicendo che nel loro futuro c'è un trasferimento sicuro, ma solo volontario. Netanyahu ha poi fatto capire a cosa serve questo trasferimento, perché "ogni Stato palestinese sarebbe una piattaforma per Israele". È arrivato niente dai paesi arabi? Niente. In realtà, questi sono piani, colleghi, che non hanno nessuna possibilità di essere portati a termine.”

“Signora Presidente, onorevoli colleghi, subito dopo il cessate il fuoco con l'Iran, la Cina ha consegnato allo stesso Iran una nuova fornitura di missili terra‑aria, i famosi SAM, secondo il Middle East Eye, notizia non smentita. Del resto, il 90 % del petrolio iraniano è destinato a Pechino ed è importantissimo per i prezzi generali del mondo. Tutto questo per dire che la Cina non è la nazione benigna interessata solo al commercio. Non possiamo illuderci: la Cina è interessata, come tutte le grandi potenze, anche alla guerra. Del resto, non c'è miglior protezionismo economico che quello di avere un forte apparato militare. Dunque, questa è la ragione vera per riaprire il dialogo con la Cina. Dobbiamo capire che cosa sta succedendo in quel paese.”
“Signor Presidente, Signor Commissario, onorevoli colleghi, parlerò in italiano. Lei mi perdonerà se non parlo di dazi ma di Gaza. Queste due vicende in realtà rispondono alla stessa idea di politica: la sostituzione da parte di Trump dell'interesse pubblico con quello privato. Tutti sappiamo che tra sei giorni il presidente Trump sarà a Gerusalemme nella sua prima visita internazionale. E Bibi Netanyahu, il suo governo, ha pensato di presentargli in quella situazione un regalo. Sappiamo dal piano che è stato approvato ieri che il governo intende invadere Gaza per spostare i palestinesi dal loro territorio e intende poi affidare il loro benessere solo alle organizzazioni di beneficenza private.”
“Signor Presidente, onorevoli colleghi, mentre discutiamo, giustamente la nostra decisione importantissima di preparare la difesa dell'Europa, Trump, Putin e Zelensky sono, mi sembra, totalmente impegnati, e molto attivi, a preparare il tavolo delle trattative. Un tavolo, da cui ricordo, noi siamo stati espulsi senza neanche essere stati avvertiti, a meno che il ministro Lubilius non lo fosse stato. Questo è un vulnus incredibile, è il vero punto di queste trattative: tenere fuori l'Europa. Allora, io vi domando: mentre prepariamo giustamente questo piano di difesa, non dobbiamo porci il problema e la priorità di tornare a quel tavolo? Ministro, noi rischiamo oggi di fare un grande discorso militare ma di tenere fuori la politica a cominciare dal ruolo del Parlamento. 2-0394-0000”
“Mr President, Donald Trump presented himself as a pacifier and in a few weeks turned to be 'Mr Chaos'. But we Europeans should not be afraid of this. The truth is that the more that America withdraws into its nationalism, the more we can move into a space of influence greater than ever. In the Middle East, many influential countries are orphaned at the moment of any initiative: Lebanon, the Gulf countries, Syria, Israel itself – which is not the kingdom of Benjamin Netanyahu, it's a much more complex country. We have to work to revive this network of alliances. I hope that the High Representative Kaja Kallas will take this step and will work with this Parliament, as many of my colleagues who have spoken today before me in this room are asking, and as it's urgent to have an answer. 2-0336-0000”

It is our duty for us – all of us, beyond the ideology – as MEPs and as human beings, to help this short truce to become a real peace. Allow me to appeal to our High Representative: Ms Kallas, Europe on the issue of the Middle East has been passionate but distant. Our effort to build peace has been almost non-existent. This is the time to make amends. Let's start with the humanitarian project, Ms Kallas, a project large, generous that will define your entire mandate.
