On a more serious note, the Irish Presidency has chosen three clear priorities: competitiveness, values and security, joined together under the motto 'Strength with unity', and that is both timely and appropriate. On competitiveness: Europe must become more productive and competitive. We must continue cutting unnecessary bureaucracy and creating the conditions for businesses to invest, innovate and grow. But that alone will not be enough. We must also strengthen our industry, deepen our internal market and realise true strategic autonomy.”

“Madam President, last month we sat in this Chamber and we listened to Jackie Fox as she shared the story of her daughter Coco and how online bullied ultimately and tragically pushed her to suicide. A very powerful speech and we rightfully gave her a standing ovation. Last week I met another mother whose son took his own life after intimate messages of him were circulated online. Her grief is unimaginable, but what haunts her still today is this, no one can tell her with certainty that those images of her son are no longer circulating somewhere on the web today. And what if there would have been a simple button for her son to push to delete these images permanently? Perhaps Glenn would still be alive today. And this is the reality behind our legislative gaps.”

“This is why Member States have agreed for a long time already to protect the Schengen Area and to control irregular migration and that mass regularisation should not take place in Europe. Spain's announced policy sends the exact opposite message. When one Member State takes a decision of this magnitude without coordinating with others, it affects the entire Union. It affects secondary movements and it affects trust. We can only guess the reasons, because this is not serious migration governance. It is a unilateral political gesture from a government weakened by corruption scandals, mismanagement and a pattern of governing by decree rather than consensus and democracy. It sends the message that illegal journeys will ultimately be rewarded with the right to stay in Europe.”
“Madam President, dear Commissioner, it was a historic moment in 2023 when we concluded the Migration and Asylum Pact under the Spanish Presidency, after years of difficult negotiations. That agreement embodied the hard-won commitment to shared responsibility and European solidarity. We were going to do it together. This is why it's really troubling to see what the Spanish Government is doing – acting unilaterally now. Mass regularising hundreds of thousands of irregular migrants risks undermining both the spirit and the trust upon which that common approach was built. Migration policy is not a national matter. Spain is part of Schengen. Spain is part of a common migration and asylum policy.”
“It must be criminalised across the EU, because all our children deserve to be better protected. In the negotiations on the Child Sexual Abuse Directive, we already agreed with the Council to criminalise this extortion of children. An EU-wide definition of cyberbullying will be key to also criminalise other forms of online harassment. So this action plan is a good starting point. But when it's about our children, we can never raise the bar high enough, especially as we are living in the age of AI and deepfakes. Technology like 'nudifying' apps must be illegal across the EU, because they serve no legitimate purpose, and only facilitate child abuse and extortion. So let's stand up to this together. There are no words to describe tragedies like that. But Coco's story is not an isolated case: all over Europe, children are victims of cyberbullying, often with terrible consequences. And the sad thing is that in many Member States, it is not even a crime. Imagine how Coco's mother felt when the police informed her that they could do nothing against the bullies who were responsible for her daughter's suicide. I cannot imagine it, and I can only hope that I will never have to. Online bullying is just as devastating as the abuse that happens on the street, and it must be treated with the same seriousness.”
“When the storm grows stronger, Europe does not throw away its umbrella – we build a bigger, a stronger, a more resilient one together. Cyprus speaks of 'an autonomous Union', and the EPP fully agrees. This is a historic moment and an existential test, and Europe must rise to the occasion. But autonomy does not mean isolation, and the second half of your slogan, 'open to the world', is just as vital. Global trade is under pressure. Europe must diversify through ambitious trade agreements with partners like Mercosur, India and beyond. You cannot complain about Europe's competitiveness while closing every door to the outside world. This presidency understands that strength and openness go hand in hand. Yes, the world feels more unstable, more fragmented and more unpredictable than before, but this is not a moment for despair. It is a moment for confidence – if we stand together as Europeans, we can emerge stronger. And that means investing where it truly matters: in our security, in our economic resilience, in our competitiveness and in managing migration. Too often we hear voices here, of the extremes in this House, offering the same destructive answer: to tear down our common umbrella in the middle of a global storm and then complain about getting wet. That is not leadership.”

“Madam President, I rise on point of order, pursuant to Rule 163, and I would like to draw the attention of the Parliament to a grave new development in Slovakia affecting the fundamental rights of EU citizens and the rule of law as a whole. Last month, in December 2025, the Slovak Government enforced a new Criminal Code amendment that effectively criminalises freedom of expression. Citizens are now threatened with six months of prison for questioning the Venice Decrees. These historical laws are being used today in 2026 to confiscate the land and forest of ethnic Hungarians. This is not an historical act. It's a live and ongoing breach of the rule of law. We call on, first of all, the Commission to take a strong stance on this.”

“Thank you very much – it is not technically a point of order, because the Rules of Procedure are very clear on these secret ballots and, therefore, if 144 people ask for it, it shall be a secret ballot. But at the same time, we also believe that the transparency and accountability of this House is crucial and that citizens have a right to know how their elected representatives vote. We very strongly believe in this from the EPP perspective and would ask you, Madam President, for the next Conference of Presidents to address this, to put this on the table so we can have an exchange with each other on how to deal with these kind of requests in the future. “Meer middelen, meer menskracht om de politiecollega’s in de lidstaten effectief te kunnen ondersteunen. Maar er is meer nodig. In veel lidstaten staat de politie onder druk: te weinig instroom, hoge werkdruk, toenemend geweld, beperkte loopbaanperspectieven, jong talent dat afhaakt, juist nu het zo hard nodig is, agenten die worden bespuugd, belaagd en aangevallen tijdens hun werk, wat onze rechtsstaat ondermijnt. Wie onze veiligheid garandeert, moet zelf veilig zijn. Daar ligt ook een taak voor Europa. Ik roep de Commissie daartoe nogmaals op: ontwikkel een Europese aanpak om geweld tegen de politie systematisch in kaart te brengen met vergelijkbare data, een gericht beleid en betere bescherming van onze handhavers. Wat we niet meten, kunnen we ook niet oplossen en dit moeten we oplossen. 2-0113-0000”
“Voorzitter, een veilige Europese Unie vraagt meer dan alleen sterke grenzen of militaire paraatheid. Ze vereist ook robuuste politiecapaciteit en echte samenwerking. Grensoverschrijdende criminaliteit, cyberdreigingen en hybride aanvallen raken dagelijks onze vrijheid en daarom moet de interne en externe veiligheid beter worden geïntegreerd. Geen gescheiden domeinen meer, maar samenwerking om hiaten te dichten en sneller te reageren. Coördinatie is geen luxe, maar bittere noodzaak. We moeten investeren in meer politiecapaciteit, zodat korpsen effectief kunnen optreden, ook bijvoorbeeld in grensregio’s waar de drugshandel floreert. En tegelijkertijd versterken we die Europese samenwerking. Die twee gaan hand in hand. Stevig op straat en verbonden in Europa. De versterking van Europol is daarbij cruciaal.”
“Alsof de draagkracht van onze samenleving onbeperkt is. Ook daarmee worden de zorgen van veel burgers te gemakkelijk terzijde geschoven. Wij nemen veiligheid en draagkracht serieus, maar blijven tegelijkertijd trouw aan die menselijke waardigheid. We willen snelle en rechtvaardige procedures en een integratiebeleid dat echt werkt. Wie in Europa veiligheid zoekt, moet die veiligheid ook respecteren. En wie onveiligheid veroorzaakt, moet daarvoor direct de gevolgen dragen. Ja, we hebben een opdracht om onze vrouwen en kinderen beter te beschermen. Als vrouwen zich niet veilig voelen op onze straten, dan verliezen we als samenleving de kern van onze vrijheid. “Voorzitter, op 19 augustus in Nederland werd Lisa, 17 jaar oud, op gruwelijke wijze vermoord. Een verdachte werd gearresteerd in een asielzoekerscentrum. Een jong leven weggerukt, een gezin gebroken. Dit is meer dan een persoonlijke tragedie. Dit raakt aan ons gevoel van veiligheid en aan de fundamenten van onze samenleving. Maar juist in zulke momenten van groot verdriet en diepe emotie, moeten we oppassen voor al te politieke reflexen. Van de uiterst rechtse zijde klinkt een framing die angst zaait en migratie reduceert tot een bedreiging voor onze vrouwen en kinderen. En daarmee speel je mensen tegen elkaar uit zonder echte oplossingen te bieden. Tegelijkertijd wordt aan de linkerkant te vaak gedaan alsof migratie slechts een opvang is uit solidariteit. Alsof er geen grenzen mogen zijn aan opvang, huisvesting of integratie.”

The recently proposed transparency law was not an isolated development, it is part of a wider strategy that actually reflects something new and hopeful in a way, because for the first time in over a decade, Viktor Orbán is facing a democratic opposition that is both capable and credible – a real threat to his hold on power. His response is not competition or dialogue; it is repression. The draft law claims to defend national sovereignty. In reality, it undermines the democratic foundations it pretends to protect.”
“A society that cannot protect its children is a society that has no future, and yet we see child sexual abuse increasing. We need to really step up our fight to protect our children. Some proposals are already on the table and we need to adopt them ASAP. In border regions, like my own, criminals exploit borders to continue their crimes. Strengthening administrative cooperation next to law enforcement and judicial cooperation is necessary and will ensure that criminals will no longer hide behind borders. And thirdly, strengthening the fight against migrant smuggling and human traffickers by criminal gangs, who often are also involved in other crimes, is an absolute priority. To conclude, the Commission has taken a key step to safeguard our citizens, but words alone won't do. We need decisive, ambitious action and you can count on the EPP.”
“Mr President, the EPP stands for a Europe that protects its citizens. You cannot have freedom or prosperity without security. And Europeans overwhelmingly agree with this. Over two thirds of European citizens support a stronger EU role in security. They also see security as the main area where the EU should act. And with the launch of today's strategy, the European Commission puts security at the core of its agenda, and rightly so. Criminal networks operate across borders. So must our response. Better cooperation and enforcement. Effective communication between Member States. Transforming Europol into an operational agency alongside stronger mandates for Eurojust and Frontex. All of this is vital to addressing security challenges. Let me highlight some specific ones.”

Zonder effectieve terugkeer zal geen enkel Europees asielbeleid houdbaar zijn en daarom is het cruciaal dat de Commissie nu met dit ambitieuze voorstel komt.”
“So it's fair to ask exactly what we have achieved in all these years, and the clear answer is not enough. So in that sense, I really welcome the determination and the ambition shown by President von der Leyen and the European leaders last week. This ambition needs now to be translated into immediate and tangible European action. Extraordinary circumstances ask for extraordinary measures, and we must be brave and bold not only to be able to help Ukraine, which is, of course, of crucial importance, but ultimately to help ourselves, because Ukraine's interests are Europe's interests, we are defending common European values. We are defending international law and the rules-based order. We are defending the very basic principle that the aggressor should not be rewarded at the expense of the victim.”
“Madam President, when your neighbour's house is on fire, you don't haggle over the price of the garden hose. With those words, the US under President Roosevelt came to our aid during the Second World War. 80 years later, war is raging again on the European continent, but this time, the US does not only want to negotiate the price of the garden hose, they bully the neighbour into giving up his house altogether before considering any help. This is the situation we are in today and it's a wake up call like never before for Europe, a wake up call that should not have been necessary. For years and years, we have been discussing the need for Europe to get serious about its own defence. Many European leaders have stood here in this room, passionately arguing the necessity of this.”
