“Mr Speaker, Sir, I would like to express my views in support of the Address of thanks. Although Singapore is a small island and a young nation, its population has progressive ideas and is active in all fields, especially in the field of politics. As a nation practising parliamentary democracy, our Government is elected by the people who will feel its rule for another five years. All Government planning and development will prove whether the Government is sincere or insincere. The people will then be able to judge when the time comes for fresh elections. The victory of the P.A.P, in the last elections proves that the people are confident that the P.A.P, will discharge its responsibility to the people and lead the nation to prosperity. Prosperity will not come about until the rural people's problems can be solved. In rural areas like Geylang Serai, plans for road improvements, street lighting and drainage cannot be implemented if the sum allocated by the Projects Committee for Geylang Serai is for only $13,200. This sum is inadequate to meet even the cost of improving one road. The Projects Committee should have reviewed the minutes of meetings of the Urban and Rural Services Committee in order to improve all the roads in Geylang Serai. "The Projects Committee will then know how much it will cost to improve one road in Geylang Serai. I hope the Minister will investigate and review the allocation for each project in Geylang Serai. With regard to public cleansing, it is usually found that workers from the Public Health Department are not giving satisfactory service to the public. In fact, some workers adopt an arrogant attitude and do not work satisfactorily. Similarly, the anti-malarial workers do not spray all the drains.”
