“I remember the crowds of Polish mourners who were there with their red and white flags for John Paul II. But with Francis, what struck me were the many waves of spontaneous cheering from the vast crowd when reference was made to his simple message for immigrants, for peace, and for understanding. Who could forget his five words: Who am I to judge? They defined his humility and his humanity for so many of us. After the ceremony, I went back to my hotel room and turned on my television. There was a recurring segment every few minutes. It showed a simple photograph of Francis and the Italian words, which I will probably mispronounce. They were: ``Grazie Francesco.”

“Thousands of Catholic clergy on the altar and in the audience wore vestments representing every shade of the colors of scarlet and red. But the vast crowds of mourners and celebrants were simply admirers of Francis, who, in his humble way, touched so many lives. At the front of the alter was his simple wooden casket. The funeral ceremony was in Latin--the language of the Catholic Church when I was a young altar boy at St. Elizabeth's Church in East St. Louis, IL, in the 1950s. As I witnessed this solemn mass and read from the text, I could hear in my mind the rusty hinges of an opening door taking me back to the Latin mass and Gregorian chant of my childhood. It is all still there, ``deo gratias.'' How did this mass differ from the funeral of John Paul decades ago?”

Over the weekend, it was my honor to join Senator Susan Collins and three of our colleagues as part of a delegation of five Senators who represented the U.S. Senate at Pope Francis' funeral at Vatican City. The crowd was overwhelming. Estimated in the hundreds of thousands, they came from every corner of the Earth. Just in our small section was a delegation in business suits from Lesotho in Africa. There were Buddhists in bright orange robes, members of the Italian Parliament, a turbaned Sikh delegation from India, and our bipartisan House delegation, led by Nancy Pelosi and Republican Leader Steve Scalise.”

They came over on a ship from Germany to Baltimore and found their way to the city of my birth, East St. Louis, IL. There are very few things left from that voyage experience so long ago. My grandmother had brought with her a Lithuanian Catholic prayer book that was considered, at the time, to be contraband in Czarist Russia. It is a family treasure. I still have it.”

“The ``operation'' in his twisted metaphor, of course, was Trump's tariff tax, a 10-percent tariff on imports from almost every nation in the world, and the ``patient'' is supposed to be the U.S. economy. If this is Dr. Trump's idea of a successful operation, he should be sued for medical malpractice. He is playing a dangerous game and, this Trump tariff-tax gambit could push our country into a desperate recession. Some suggest that a famine is underway in some parts of Gaza. I don't have any personal knowledge, but, I will tell you, the scenes that were depicted last Sunday on ``60 Minutes'' are heartbreaking. Two doctors from Chicago had gone there risking their lives to volunteer to try to save the children and those who have been the victims of Israeli bombing. And I am sorry to say they have not been as successful as they would have liked to have been. But they reported to us graphically what is going on there with the lack of medical supplies, the lack of hospitals and basic food and sustenance that is needed by the people in that area. What happened on October 7 was horrific--horrific. Some 1,200 innocent Israelis were killed, butchered, murdered by terrorists under the flag of the Hamas movement. I am proud of the fact that President Harry Truman was the first President to recognize Israel's right to exist, and I certainly concur with that sentiment to this day. The creation of the State of Israel after World War II was almost inevitable if this group of people were to exist. The Holocaust was a reminder of the prejudice against many of the Jewish faith and the enduring struggle which they have been engaged in for decades, if not centuries. It was the right thing to do. “South Dakota State University used NIH funding to increase cervical cancer screening among indigenous women who faced higher rates of cervical cancer prevalence and death. They also used funding in South Dakota to develop new targeted therapies for colorectal cancer. They are safer and more effective than current chemotherapy. These researchers know that cuts to medical research mean diseases will not be cured and treatments will not be found. They know the mass indiscriminate firings at NIH don't just mean we are losing talent; it also means we are losing time and progress. In 2024, South Dakota research institutions received nearly $29 million in NIH funding, which supported 453 jobs in South Dakota. Sanford Research/University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University were among some of the top NIH-funded institutions in South Dakota. So what did they do with this Federal money? Could they survive an audit if they had to explain how they spent it? You decide. Sanford Research/University of South Dakota researchers used NIH funding to support their Center for Pediatric Research, with a specific focus on training new scientists to study pediatric diseases. Is that a priority? If it is your child or grandchild, you bet it is.”

Because of medical research, kids with a simple ear infection and pneumonia can find relief with antibiotics. “It raises a question as to whether or not decisions are being made, particularly on tariffs, that are going to have an impact on ordinary working American families--a negative impact on that basis. I think that we all want to be sensitized to that fact. You can watch CNBC, and you can commune with the economists of note, but for most people, it is pretty basic: Do I have enough money to get to the next paycheck? A lot of people struggle with that every single day. That is the reality that we are faced with.”
