John W. Mannion

Representative for New York · Democratic · United States

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

“The results are showing across the country, whether it is upstate New York, Indiana, or Mississippi. However, we know there are obstacles to literacy, and that includes poverty, achievement gaps, declining test scores, and a lack of early literacy interventions that work for students.”

“When we help kids learn to read, we are giving them a foundation that will carry them through for the rest of their lives. Strong readers make strong students. Strong students make strong schools. Strong schools are integral to a stronger America. It is all about literacy that leads to achievement.”

“Madam Speaker, for nearly three decades, I was a public school science teacher, so as passionate as I am about learning and reading, there is another Mannion who is the real literacy expert in our family, and that is my wife, Jennifer Brady Mannion.”

“Mr. Speaker, like many who have met Dr. Hazel Dukes, you will remember the first time that you meet her, for she is a force and her presence is pronounced. For me, it was at a dinner at the Rome, New York, NAACP, which was an area that was new to me. When I had a chance to speak with Dr. Dukes, she was warm and welcoming.”

  1. “I urge my colleagues to support America's students, teachers, and schools, and vote in favor of the Science of Reading Act. As my mother-in-law, Patricia Brady, and my wife, Jennifer Mannion, would say: Children first, and that means all children.”

  2. “When we help kids learn to read, we are giving them a foundation that will carry them through for the rest of their lives. Strong readers make strong students. Strong students make strong schools. Strong schools are integral to a stronger America. It is all about literacy that leads to achievement. The bipartisan support of the Science of Reading Act speaks to the importance of this work and to what Congress can accomplish when we focus on getting results for kids and teachers. Literacy is what unlocks the doors and lowers the barriers. I thank my colleagues and cosponsors Representative Houchin and Representative Kiley, as well as the chair and ranking member. It has been an honor to work with everyone on this legislation.”

  3. “The results are showing across the country, whether it is upstate New York, Indiana, or Mississippi. However, we know there are obstacles to literacy, and that includes poverty, achievement gaps, declining test scores, and a lack of early literacy interventions that work for students. Applying evidence-based best practices, like the science of reading, work. For years, these issues have been met with inaction by policymakers while teachers and parents continued to sound the alarm. This bill is one step that will move us in the right direction. It ensures that Federal funding for literacy programs are being spent in an evidence- based way that will improve reading outcomes nationwide. Importantly, this bill is also careful to preserve instructional tools needed for students with disabilities or English language learners.”

  4. “Madam Speaker, for nearly three decades, I was a public school science teacher, so as passionate as I am about learning and reading, there is another Mannion who is the real literacy expert in our family, and that is my wife, Jennifer Brady Mannion. She has spent her career helping students gain a love of reading while training other teachers on best practices in the classroom. She taught at virtually every elementary level and continues to be an interventionist and literacy expert working with children and teachers. She will tell you what most educators across our country now know, and that is that bringing the science of reading to scale is fundamental to improving literacy outcomes for every student.”
