When it comes to the incompetence that causes these disasters or the effect of these disasters for failure to pass policy that is reasonable, that averts and diverts from the disaster, the rest of the American people should not be forced to pay for those things. Those are the decisions that are made, and that is how they are made. It is no more complicated than that. Mr. Speaker, I thank the gentleman from Arizona for his partnership and support on this. Let's take politics out of everything altogether. Let's have competent leadership at the top level, at the Federal Government, and at each State level.”

“Mr. Speaker, I yield myself such time as I may consume. Mr. Speaker, H.R. 1342, the Stopping Political Discrimination in Disaster Assistance Act, amends the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act to include a prohibition on discrimination based on political affiliation. Currently, the Stafford Act makes it clear that FEMA should not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, nationality, sex, age, disability, English proficiency, or economic status. This bill adds political affiliation to that list. Following Hurricanes Helene and Milton, there were alarming reports that FEMA workers were skipping homes impacted by those disasters based on political signs that supported President Trump.”

Mr. Speaker, I am proud to have introduced this bipartisan resolution along with the Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management Subcommittee Ranking Member Greg Stanton of Arizona. This resolution authorizes the use of these Capitol Grounds for the 44th Annual Peace Officers' Memorial event to honor the law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty in 2024. According to the Fraternal Order of Police, last year, there were 342 on-duty officers who were shot, 50 of whom were killed. In February of this year, tragedy occurred in the district I am honored to represent when multiple police officers were shot while in the line of duty. One, Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police Department, made the ultimate sacrifice. Mr.”

Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police Department was killed in the line of duty while responding to an active shooter at UPMC Memorial hospital at York, which also included a hostage situation that wounded five other individuals.”
