“Most recent publicly announced was Mike, and we said yes because we love the content, we think they're covering issues in a deep way that other publications are just not seeing yet because I think they do a really good job of sort of really understanding that millennial mindset and issues that affect them. And we love the team.”

“Don't conflict. I think we're still, we as a company are still bullish on that space and think we as a company have a long way to go in terms of making that a bigger business for us. So that's why we're interested in this space. I think there's a lot of opportunity specific to us there. And esports as well, I think there's different ways to do esports and different ways to make it potentially broader for a broader audience and more accessible. So I think that could be interesting”

“Poor rainy day or hot chocolate. I'm more of a fiction person in that mindset, but every day I read all of the tech blogs and of course term sheet, Dan's pro rata. The longest I've read, I think I've been reading Dave Pell's newsletter, which is now called NextDraft for like 20 years. So that's my longest running.”

“I mean, it could be interesting from an understanding rights perspective. So, if HBO has Game of Thrones and understanding all the rights and talent associated with each episode and understanding all of that, I think could be super interesting.”

“I mean, in media, I'll do this in sort of a media lens overhyped, I think has been esports and VR too, but definitely esports. And then underhyped. This is not underhyped in general, obviously, but like blockchain and crypto has been certainly very well hyped in the general market, I'd say as it pertains to media. We haven't seen a ton.”

“Okay, my favorite book I'd say now is the wind up bird chronicle by Murakami. I love fiction. I read a ton of fiction. I thought it was beautifully written. Super interesting, very weird, but also relatable somehow.”

“That's typically what we do. We've also co-led A's, like we could split an A with another financial investor. I think that's a good way to do it also, if it makes sense at that stage to bring in a strategic, you know, it depends on where you are and where your company is, even though it's called an A. But we've split A's with other financials, and that's worked out well.”

“So one way to mitigate it is really stage mitigation. So, in my view, I don't think corporates are your best lead investor for a series A. If you do that, then I do think you run into those negative signaling issues when you go out to raise the series B and people are asking sort of why do you only have a strategic? Why don't you have a VC in your deal? So I think that's one way to mitigate it. If you have already raised that Series A from one or a couple financial investors and then you bring in a strategic investor later, I think that becomes less of an issue.”

“Not anymore. We saw that a lot more 15 years ago. You can see that as much anymore. They do follow ons. I think that's a huge question, right? Like how often are they doing follow-ons in almost every single deal that they're in? Are they selectively doing follow-ons? Do they never do follow-ons? I think that's super important. How long have they been at it? How long has their company supported strategic VC? And is it an annual thing where every year they're doing deals? Do they dip in and out of the market? Are they steady? And then, you know, ask about working with other VCs. Do they have a good track record of working with other financial VCs? And also, how about working with other strategic VCs? You don't want to lock yourself up where you're sort of exclusive to one partner.”

“Yeah, definitely ask how do they view venture capital overall, right? Why are they doing it? Is it a path to M&A for them, or are they acting more as typical VCs? Ask them if they're going to ask for special rights? Like, are they asking for a path to control? Are they asking for rights of first offer, rights of first refusal? You don't want to accept any of those things, but those are questions to ask just to make sure.”

“Obviously, both, but first, just the structure like what is that? How do they operate? How many deals do they do? How long have they been in the market? And then also really understand their businesses. You know, I can't tell you how many times people get mixed up as to what Time Warner is, although that's kind of fair because we've changed a lot through the years. But understand what that strategic represents, what their businesses are, and really try to figure out are there any natural fits between what you're trying to do as an entrepreneur and the divisions and the businesses they have at that particular strategic and see if there's a fit at all. That would be first and then understand the person. What deals have they done? How have they acted? Talk to some of their other CEOs and try to get a sense for what kind of investor they are.”

“True, although, if you look at any certainly our portfolio, almost anyone's portfolio, the earlier the exits, usually the better. Not just from an IRR standpoint, because that's just math, but just from just dollar over dollar standpoint as well. When we've looked at that, so we're not mapping out 10-year kind of returns, but that's true. We don't have those limitations or restrictions, and we don't have sort of the need to show certain exits because we're raising another fund. But in reality, we're not typically going super early. So we're not doing seed deals. We're not looking at 10-year time horizons. And most of the time from a strategic standpoint, we're looking for more near-term potential fits.”

“Question. We're not set up as a fund, so it's more of like a capital allocation process, although each deal gets approved individually by our investment committee, but, you know, we say we think we're going to spend X amount of money each year in advance from a budgeting standpoint. But timeline-wise, we make follow-on investments. And so when we first go into a deal, typically our size is from $3 to $10 million, our first check. But we know we're going to be doing follow-on. So we definitely think about the timeline. We spend a lot of time up front in our diligence process sort of modeling out how much money this company is going to need, how long it's going to take for the market to arrive if it's not there yet, and making sure we understand if we're putting in five now what we think the ultimate check will be over time. So we present that sort of upfront.”

“I'm sure. So that's more in the sort of AR field. So we've done a select few investments in the space, and we're going to learn and see how the market develops.”

“So we've made a few VR investments, the ones that we've made, have been doing really well in terms of being able to raise additional money and have products in market like Next VR. I think we think about it from the lens of the content that we have now and what makes sense in VR. I think it's super early still, just from obviously from a usage standpoint, I think it's only going to get better, but it's early. So we've made a few bets in companies that we know we'll be able to partner with in the near term to bring sort of basketball games to life, for instance, in VR, or take some of our, we made an investment in a company called ADI, which does volumetric capture of actual people. So you could like volumetrically capture Wonder Woman and then put her in your office.”

“And think it works great for a lot of our IP from an investment standpoint. We're looking at who's innovating in the sector, who's creating the next thing. So not just another tablet game that looks like this, but who's sort of moving the industry forward and creating new formats and new platforms that could be applicable for our IP is why we're interested in it.”

“Right. Look, we are very bullish on the game sector as a company. Warner Bros. has now branded $1.5 billion top line games business, which is amazing. They've acquired a bunch of companies over the past 10 years. So we develop and publish all of our own games now across console, PC, and mobile. A lot of that's our IP, like all the Batman games, for instance, but some of it's sort of acquired game IP that we have. It's just a growing, interesting sector. Video gaming is still a very big and growing media platform. So we as a company have a lot of IP that makes a lot of sense in that environment in the video game environment. And so from an investment standpoint, we're really looking at what's the next thing, right? So who's innovating? Like one of my recent deals from last year out post games, they're creating really innovative game as well as an underlying sort of tech platform that goes along with it. And sort of that's what's next on the frontier. So for us, given that we do believe in the gaming sector,”

“Right, so it's driven our investments in companies like Bussell, which is targeting women 18 to 34, and they're now the biggest site on the web, hitting women 18 to 34, which is amazing. It's driven our investment in Mike, which is one of my most recent investments, which is really a news brand for millennials and uncovering issues and topics that are really important to that demo. So I think there's new brands being created addressing the needs of millennials from a sort of journalism standpoint and a content standpoint. But then there's also all the interesting technologies around how we consume content and how we navigate content and how we are recommended content and sort of the whole consumer experience of sitting down and maybe watching a TV show is very different now than it was 10 years ago. So understanding that and how consumers discover and enjoy and watch things has just changing so rapidly. And so that's obviously important to us as a huge creator of all that content.”

“I think there's a couple things. I mean, there's new sort of content brands being built today, I mean, the sort of digital realm for younger audiences. So that's been a sector that we've spent a lot of time looking at.”

“Just think it's more interesting to have a thesis and you're looking so you have a thesis and a lens that you're looking through to understand what investments are going to make sense so you have one lens is always you know is this going to be a good financial outcome but then having another lens which is does this fit strategically with us and then what could we learn about this right so i really love media and technology and the intersection of those two things and how technology can change the way we're going to consume content going forward and interact with content going forward so having that piece and being able to think about that and thinking about how a new technology can disrupt one of our businesses or help one of our businesses to me just makes it a lot more fun especially because i am interested in that sector”

“Think that you have to be really careful with how you do it. So, you know, we're very upfront to say that's not why we're doing this. So we're not making these investments to have an early look at a potential acquisition down the road. And I think that's really important. So if that is sort of the MO of the strategic group, I'd be cautious if I were an entrepreneur.”

“So it's different. I think it's different for every strategic you'll talk to. Everyone has their own flavor. I think for us, it's definitely both. So we need to make money. You know, we want to be competitive with VC returns and make money for our shareholders and our company. But the strategic piece for us is equally important. So it's sort of a 50-50. So we want to make sure we're going to make money on each deal if we can.”

“So, I think first you have to start at just what does it take to be a good investor, right? And how do you, how are you a good, helpful venture capital investor? And so if you're a lead and you're acting as a lead and joining boards, what does it take to be a good board member and start with that? And so how helpful you can be to your companies with everything from hiring to fundraising to M&A to BizDev and strategy. And then you sort of have to layer on top of that how you can then be extra helpful, right? So you get the VC, how do you be a good VC down, and then how can you be even more helpful? And as a strategic for us, that means connections within our big company at Time Warner, within all of our divisions, and helping the entrepreneur sort of navigate those conversations and set up those meetings for them and try to be as helpful as we can with BizDev in our company.”

“I think it just try to be open and try not to, you know, there are VCs who say you have to network to us in a certain way to either be hired or to show them your plan. And I think just try to, if you can, and have time, be open. And if people DM you or try to DM you or at you on Twitter and want to send you a business plan, say yes. It's not that hard.”

“Think it is. I think it's easier when you have a thesis. So because we're strategic investors and we have a theme, you know, we're trying to find companies that fit into certain categories in the digital media ecosystem. It's a little easier because then you can sort of filter out stuff pretty quickly if it just doesn't fit our thesis. Much easier to do it when you have some kind of thesis that you're working against to then filter more quickly. But I think it's doable.”

“So for us, we've always been really open. So, we have on our website an email address to send anyone who wants to send us a deck, or just a pitch email can send it to us. And we've always looked at everything, I think, and that's a lot. It's challenging. So we look at around 600-ish deals a year. That doesn't mean we meet with all of them, but we'll at least look at them. And I think it's important. I think, you know, we want to see a diversity of ideas from a diversity of different kinds of people. And so the whole concept of you have to network your way to us. I don't really believe in that. the first deal, maybe not the first deal, but the first one I sort of sourced and ended up working on came to us completely over the transom and just sort of called us up and said, do you guys do investments? And somehow the call got ratted to me. And I really liked it. And so if we weren't that open, you know, we never would have done that deal.”

“That is a good question. I'd say when I joined, there certainly weren't as many people doing corporate VC. Although when I joined in 2001, it was sort of, you know, the first bubble of VC investing. And there were a lot of funds or corporate groups who had done it for a couple of years, sort of like late 90s, early 2000, and then stopped. And I think there are a few firms who just kept going. And we did that. We invested sort of the same-ish amounts every year starting from the late 90s before I was there through now. And we really kept at it. And I think some groups did that and some sort of came in and out of the market and sort of stopped for a while and then came back in the last five years or so. You know, the perception, I think the perception, I hope is better. I think it's for my firm. I think it depends on like it is for a traditional financial VC. I think their perception of your firm depends on the people who have been there and their track record and what they've done.”

“Well, I think I've got my first taste of tech investing in college. I actually did a summer internship one summer at a venture capital firm in New York, which was a super unique kind of summer internship opportunity. And I just loved it. I loved meeting companies every day. I loved learning about just new technologies, meeting entrepreneurs. So that's sort of my first taste of it. And then I didn't do that right away after college. I went into investment banking for a couple years in the media sector because I knew I wanted to work on media and worked a lot on Time Warner stuff when I was in banking. I was sort of the Time Warner Analyst and worked on lots of great things for them, including a lot of digital strategy ideas and went into VC after banking for a couple years and then made my way back to Time Warner having a lot of contacts there from when I worked with them in banking. So joined in 2001.”
