  2. Word, what a fantastic episode that was with Ari, and absolutely incredible to hear his methodology for building high performance teams, and a massive thank you to him for giving up the time today to appear on the show. And again, a big thank you to Brenda Wallace at Fifth Wall for making the introduction without which this episode would not have been possible. And if you enjoyed the show today and would like to see more from us, then you can follow me on Snapchat at H Stebbings with 2Bs. I'd absolutely love to see you there. Or you can follow Ari on Twitter, Ari A-R-I underscore Mir M-I-R. But before we leave you, State, do not forget that very few pieces of software are a must for the majority of VCs that I have on the show. But eShares most certainly is. ESAS is the number one cap table management platform allowing for equity management, four hundred nine evaluations and liquidity all in one place. And eShares is made for companies of all sizes with over 5,000 trusted customers, including the likes of Squarespace, Kickstarter and DoorDash, just to name a few. So to try out the must-have.

  3. Ari has been such a pleasure to have you on the show. As I said, I heard so much from Brendan, from Hero, and from the teams at Sakora and GV. So I can't thank you enough for giving up the time, but I so appreciate it

  4. Do you want to finish though today on a very exciting one and the next five years for you and for Clutter? What's the roadmap ahead?

  5. Absolutely, or is it always a must for me? A big one that I always think about competition. Are you a fan of the Row Your Own Race method or only the paranoid survive?

  6. Absolutely. I'm fantastic here, and a massive congratulations on kind of the alignment of growth and gross margin, always fundamentally challenging in startups. But I do want to finish today on a quick fire round. So I say a short statement and you give me your immediate thoughts. How does that sound Terrifying. 60 seconds or less for each one. Sound good? Favorite book and why taught me what should I be reading?

  7. I'm really pleased you said about allocating resources there because I do want to touch on what interview on the 20-minute VC would be that without a little bit of stalking. And you recently tweeted, I love it when I hear from the investment community that my competitors don't understand Unity Economics. So kind of taking that back to resources. I'd love to hear how you think about kind of Unity economics and how much of a role they play for you today with cluster moving forward.

  8. I'm very interested though in terms of building that culture. One cool element that I often hear from founders that's crucial to kind of successful culture building is the diversity of the team itself, being the fabric of the culture. Before on the show, I've had Josh Wolf at Lux, who said, the diversity that matters most is cognitive diversity. And this goes kind of contrary to your thesis. So talk to me about your thesis and why you believe potentially that kind of cognitive diversity is dangerous.

  9. Would you say then you're very much a protagonist of the higher slow and fire fast? Absolutely good. I do want to discuss, though, kind of the performance management culture and the scaling of that with the company and at what point can you put it into implementation? Is it day one per se? And then also where do you see inflection points in the development of the culture of the sports team and where kind of fundamental elements really change?

  10. To the intense performance management, and if one doesn't hit the bars required, how do you kind of communicate that and what's the time lapse on when someone doesn't hit those performance metrics that you give them the leeway? It's a great question. There is definitely an element of fear that results from building a culture that resembles a sports team more than a family. But there are two types of fear. There's irrational fear and then there's healthy fear. Irrational fear, you want to How much time do you give if performance isn't matched with the metrics

  11. By humane performance management. And what we mean by humane performance management is we're going to set the expectation for what your performance should be. We will try our best to clearly communicate to you your progress against this benchmark. And if it so happens that you don't meet the expectation, it won't come as a surprise to you, but we will then have to performance manage you out. And I think this is very different than what you would get in a family environment. In a family environment, there's almost an illogical sense of loyalty, right? And so often I find first time entrepreneurs or inexperienced managers wait too long to communicate to their team members that they're not meeting expectations and take even longer to make the tough decision in regards to their employment. Can I ask, with such a methodology, is it not instantly creating a culture of fear with regard to

  12. sports team and not a family. What do you mean by this and how does it apply to the hiring methodology? Sure, so there's a well-known concept in the technology industry as it relates to team building that read at Netflix pioneered. And this idea that the single biggest lie that employees tell employers is that it's a family. You don't leave your family for another family because the second family is giving you more attractive compensation package. And the second biggest lie that employers tell employees is that it's a family. You don't source hire, train, and manage your sister. And so I think it's really important that you're upfront with each other as a team. And this is a bi-directional communication that happens between, I think, the team member and the management team that what we're really trying to do is create a culture that is primarily driven by

  13. Culture is your hiring methodology and your performance management methodology. So at Clutter, we've invested heavily into those two and actually actively de-emphasized the former. And the problem with the former is if you invest too heavily in what I call putting the right coat of paint on the walls, is that you're really masking the problems with the business. If everyone is having fun at work because you're having movie days or you're giving away free lunches or you're doing happy hours regularly, what you're really doing, I think, is obfuscating the underlying problems with the business. And you're preventing everyone from being able to honestly wear their emotions on their sleeves as regards to the health of the business. So talk to me. You said there about the hiring methodology with regards to kind of culture. And you've said before you should build a

  14. Two hours out where land is plentiful and cheap, and in exchange give your mom a customer experience that's 10 times better. Moving, packing, photographing, and cataloging, all of her stuff, and giving her one click access to her items VA cloud solution so that at any point she can just go to cloud.com, select her golf bag, and have it return delivered to her doorstep within 48 hours. But I do want to touch on an element that you said there with the prior startups and having one successful and then one not successful. I'm intrigued, how did that experience influence your running and approach to clutter today? What were the big learnings? It had a tremendous impact on my approach with clutter. What I found with my second startup pocket change, the one that failed, was that culture is not happy hour. It's not a foozeball table. It's not.

  15. And she was baffled because she always paid on time. She had been storing with them for over five years and she never even visited the facility and definitely didn't remember what was even in storage at that point. And so she felt like they were actively trying to fire her as a customer. And so Brian's telling me this story and complaining that he thought it was one of the worst consumer experiences he had ever seen and was asking for ideas on how we could deliver a 10x better customer experience at price parity with the incumbents. And I had been researching the on-demand space for some time and I connected the dots immediately and said, Brian, I think the opportunity is to apply the on-demand model to the space. And instead of storing your mom's stuff in Marina Del Rey where land is scarce and expensive, why don't we store it outside the city?

  16. Ari, it's such a pleasure to have you on the show today. Huge thanks to Brendan at Fifth Wall for the intro, but thank you so much for joining me today, Ari. No, thank you for having me. I appreciate this opportunity. Not at all, but I'd love to get started today by chatting a little bit about you and the founding story for Clutter. Sure, so this is my third venture-backed startup I've co-founded. My first startup was Gum Gum, the world's largest image ad network. They're in the visual AI space. And then my second startup was Pocket Change, which Google funded. Pocket Change, I was not as successful with, I was never able to find product market fit. And then Clutter, I co-founded with my best friend Brian. We launched the business in 2015, and the idea came about after a dinner he had with his mother. During that dinner, she was complaining that her local self-storage provider had raised their rates twice in one year.

  18. You are listening to the 20 minute VC with your host Harry Stebbings at H. Stebbings with 2Bs on Snapchat. And for today's very special Founders Friday, we have an immensely topical episode for you. In the last fortnight, they raised a whopping 64 million Series C, led by Atomico, with participation from Sequoia, Google Ventures or GV, and the fantastic Brandon Wallace at Fifth Wall. Yes, I'm thrilled to welcome Clutter founder Ary Mir to the show today. For those that don't know, Clutter is the startup that provides simple, painless solutions to your storage problems. As for Ari, before changing the world of storage with Clutter, Ari found a gum gum, the world's largest image ad network in the visual AI space, and pocket change, a startup bat by Google. I do also want to say a massive thank you to Brandon Wallace at Fifth Wall for the intro to Ari today. And if you haven't checked out our episode with Brandon, then that really is a must. But before we dive into today's show, very few pieces of software are a must for the majority of VCs I have on the show. But eShares most
