“Well, I recently moved in with the girlfriend, so that love story is going Yeah, so that's exciting. Yeah, we're still settling into the new place. But yeah, so that's where we are on a personal front. Five years at UiPath, you know, time here is like in dog years. So that's tough to predict. But, you know, we're establishing a new pillar in the enterprise software stack. And this is as meaningful a transformation as databases presented in the 90s, our cloud-based infrastructure in the early 2000s. So I feel really fortunate for not just myself, but for everyone at UiPat that we're in a position right now where we're one of the few companies on the planet who can realistically talk about building a business that becomes $100 billion market cap company with the product set and the market and customers that we're already serving today. And that's not something to take for granted. So that's what we're striving for.”

“Curious about what your competition is doing, but don't let it consume you. I always say that a strategy based on someone else's strategy is no strategy at all. Focus on your vision and building against it, and you'll know you're onto something if they start copying the way in which you phrase things or the way in which you're building.”

So it's kind of a meeting that never happened that could have been really interesting. Hopefully he knows about us one day though.”

“Well, the best investor meeting that I never had is actually a better story. Several months ago, our CMO, Bobby Patrick, and I were invited down to the New York Stock Exchange to witness public offering of another tech company. And it was a really exciting event for us. We got a private tour of facilities, front row seat at the bell ringing. And we were feeling a bit high that day. We were levitating above ground a little bit. And we happened to be 10 feet from Jim Kramer as he was about to get on and do his show. And we were with this woman, the president of the New York Stock Exchange, who we said, hey, do you think it'd be possible for us to, I mean, of course, we're with the head of marketing. Of course, he's going to want to see if we can get something in front of Jim. So we asked, you know, hey, can we say hi to Jim Framer? And she goes, let me see, you know, he's getting ready for work. Let me see if we can get him. She goes over and we could hear what she was saying. We were close enough. And she said, hey, Jim, you know, we're with this really interesting automation company, UiPath. It just raised an evaluation. They're doing all this stuff.”

“I think we've gotten to an era where there's just a lot of arrogance and entitlement in the ecosystem. As an investor, part of my job was talk to a bunch of companies and extract data points. But even today with our open ecosystem and our partner model, I'm still speaking with a lot of people. It's amazing people that get to like a million, two million dollars in NARR. And they think that they're God's gift to earth. And this is, you know, they're like the next jobs or something. And I look at our company, which is over a quarter billion, and we never, Daniel in particular, never has that aura of arrogance around him. So, you know, I'd like everyone to just get back to being humble and building great products that solve really amazing challenges.”

“It's a pretty popular book, so you might have already read it, but I'm a huge fan of originals by Adam Brandt. I'll tell you why. I live in a world where I'm constantly surrounded by people who have 10, 20, 30 years more experience than me. Meaning that they can point to any number of examples on how things that they've done or seen have been successful or failed for whatever reason. I just don't have that sample size at this juncture in my life. But this book celebrates those who come to the table with a different perspective and they call them nonconformists. And that's a view that I really cherish and love and empowers me to still have a voice despite not having the same as some of the people that I engage with.”

“Company from day one because we were born global, right? Started in Romania and expanded to APAC and the likes. But we tried to place offices around a leader. Daniel's based in New York. So we have a lot of leadership in New York. London's a really great hub for us and EMIA, Tokyo in Japan. So we've got people spread in a bunch of different places, but we've got kind of a localized HQ for each one of those regions where we have leadership presence, where we have specific functional teams behind those individuals. And that's been really helpful in this growth journey.”

“All businesses these days are for the most part global. So distributed leadership teams aren't really something new. I mean, it's not something we invented. Time spent together is extremely valuable and you learn to cherish that time with your colleagues because you never get it as often as you'd like. I'd say the biggest challenge is the cultural cap and bringing people together to better understand how you work in different cultures saying certain things can mean different things across the globe and picking up on those nuances. It's especially challenging, right? When founders are the original exec team is non-US, non-Western Europe. It's also a ton of fun because it creates a different learning experience beyond your quintessential corporate America entity where everyone's on the same floor five days a week. I think one thing that we did a really good job of early on and it was a strategic decision, but it was building a hub and spoke type model where we knew we were going to be a global”

“Yeah, it's a tough line. I mean, it doesn't mean you want to go out into the world telling them every little intricacy about your business, all the fears that you have at once. But you could show leadership in different ways and leadership to your employees can mean one thing, leadership to your customers can be another. And leadership in front of investors can mean something completely different. And it's just how you present it. And it's not about making up a different story or changing the messaging. It's about how you're presenting yourself and how genuine you're being. And people pick up on that, right? It's not really what you're seeing. It's really about how you're saying.”

“Not what our marketing team or PR team would write up, you know. I'm sure he has some scripted answer that he just ignores every time. But people want to follow someone who's genuine, open, and most importantly vulnerable. And so transitioning for me, someone who's historically tried to be this polished, rigor-type person to someone who isn't afraid or ashamed of vulnerability, it's a really hard transition. And so that's something I'm still in the middle of.”

“Kind of manifested into this idea of if I became a super rigid, fact based, machine calculated, decision-oriented, that would make me a lot better at my job because I'd be leaving a motion out of it. And I think there is some truth to that. However, when I look at guys like at Daniel, one of the attributes that I think makes him such an amazing leader is his willingness to be vulnerable in front of the masses. I've seen this guy stand on stage in front of thousands of customers, partners, and investors. And he always gets that quintessential, you know, what keeps you up at night or what's your biggest fear. And he has no shame in getting up there and very candidly telling everyone, my biggest fear is that I am going to screw this up. This is my first time doing this. I don't have all the answers. I'm worried that I'm going to ruin this massive opportunity, not just for me, but for my employees, all the people who are backing me. And listen, it's not a polished response at all.”

“The quote unquote climbing the corporate ladder. Everything was just, it was so tactical. It was get this partner signed up, release this feature, script this announcement, do it well, get some, hopefully some nice praise from whoever my manager was, and try and move up. It was a very inwardly focused, narrow view of the world. Whereas I counter that with my day-to-day today. I spend most of my days speaking with employees, trying to understand how I can help to remove hurdles for them and empower them to drive change. And I was talking with someone recently about this topic. They said something that really struck with me. They said, leaders become great not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others. That really struck the chord with me. And it's something that I take to every meeting that I walk into. In terms of, you asked about, you know, hard things. I've only just recently learned, probably still in the process of learning community grips with a few things. In business, you always hear about people making objective decisions, which to me over the years.”

“Yeah, that's a really tough question. First of all, I look at the people around me and I say, wow, these are real leaders. These are people with 30 plus years of industry experience. They hail from large, successful companies that they've either been intricate part of the story of or several cases have actually built themselves sit on big company boards. And all of that's just like the professional stuff. And there's, you know, the actual real life stuff. These are people that have gotten married, raised families, and experienced things in life that just given the constraints of time. I haven't had an opportunity. I'm just a 30-something year old guy in New York trying to connect the dots as best I know how. You know, what I can say, though, is that in the last 18 months on this journey, I've been changed in some pretty foundational ways. I remember back to, you know, my first job right out of school. I was working for a big tech company on the West Coast into it. And I was every day, I was just so focused on getting to the next level.”

“And reliable of one another, his wife, his brothers, his son. I mean, we just have an amazing relationship. And despite all of our differences, even languages that we speak, I mean, English is not his first language. We've come to be really close friends. So, you know, there's this idea of productivity, harmony, trust. And then the last thing is the best. You know, we know how to have fun. Building a globally distributed company at the pace we're going. It's tough work, man. It's long hours. It's a lot of really tough decisions, a lot of unknowns managing a lot of emotion. But if you can't take a day here and there to just enjoy and celebrate the small thing, what the hell is the point? I totally agree with you there. If you can't take the day, I mean, I didn't really listen to my own advice, but I totally agree with you. I do want to ask one personal thing, though. And it's, you know, the companies change so much with the scale. And you've been at the forefront of that for the last 18 months.”

“There's no feelings lost in disagreement. And it's oftentimes that we have a debate and we end up on separate sides of the table and that's all right to premit and move on to the next thing. But that's a surefire way to ensure that you're getting everything out there and being exhaustive in terms of the approach. I guess point two would just be trust. And that's a simple one because it's the basis of all human relationships without trust. There's nothing for the relationship to revolve around. And I think what's unique about the trust that we have is that we come from completely different upbringings. I mean, he was born in communist Romania. I came from the northern suburbs of Chicago. You're born in different decades. We're in different stages of life. He's married with a kid. We have oftentimes different opinions on how to build UiPath and what the best path forward is. But over the last 18 months, you know, we've proven to no one really but ourselves that we could be honest.”

“Foremost, we mutually believe in productivity over harmony. When I started, Daniel had me read this book called The Five Temptations of a CEO. And this notion of productivity over harmony is one of the temptations that is outlined in the book. And I think the general concept is that most people believe that better to agree and get along than disagree and potentially conflict with one another. It's just built into how we're all raised, right? But Harmony oftentimes can really restrict productive ideological conflict and the interchange of opinions around an issue. And so without this conflict, you don't actually often come to the most optimal decision. I find that the best decisions are made by really healthy debate once all the opinions are on the table. And so I guess, you know, this first element, productivity over Harmony and Daniel and my mutual belief in it is just a really long way of saying that we're really good at having tough conversations with one another. We enjoy rigorous debate.”

“Marketing arena. With RPA, there's really no limit to where it could spread. We don't sell based on industry or vertical. We're domain focused. And so it's really early in the RPA lifecycle, but I think it's got a really fruitful road ahead. It absolutely does have a fruitful road ahead. And, you know, one of the common elements that came up when I spoke to your investors and board, other than how Brennan you were, was the element of Daniel's leadership. And I do want to touch on that. Speaking of kind of the road ahead, because when I spoke to them, they also spoke about your unique relationship with Daniel specifically. So I'm intrigued. What do you attribute the success of yours and Daniel's relationship to? Yeah, you know, that's funny. You're the first person to ask me that question. That means it's either very shit or very brilliant. All right. Now, we're always talking about people always want to know more about company. They very rarely dig into how Daniel and I partner with one another. It's a great question. I think first in”

“Documented by the BPOs. And then the last, you know, we've all kind of heard this story, but it's the emergence of AI, cheap computing led to massive amounts of data, which led to this breakaway from the AI winter. And as luck would have it, RPA actually became the fastest entry point to AI. And so I think that it's really those three things that has allowed this meteoric rise. And then I think that anyone who classifies this as just hype or a flash in the stirring pan doesn't have a full comprehension of the scale of our deployments, the value that we're creating kind of misunderstands the potential here. I mean, I look at companies like Workday, an amazing tool that we're a customer of. They've got something like a $40 billion market cap, and they're focused pretty much exclusively on HR, salesforce, another company where big customer and partnered very closely with over $100 billion market cap. And they're pretty squarely within the sales and”

“Complex technological challenge. This is not something that you could solve with money alone. You need time to understand all of the nuances, write the end scripts to all these different systems. And there's a strong gestation dynamic at play here. We worked hard at it for a long time. And then in 2016, maybe late 2015, when we had truly enterprise grade version that was scalable, secure, easy to use, all these things. That's when we kind of launched. Before that, we just didn't have something that was mature enough. Market force number two is there's better documented business processes around the time that we were creating this enterprise grade version of our computer vision. All these large BPOs had made huge movements and better structuring and documenting the processes of their clients. And so this kind of gave RPA companies the blueprints over automation could actually be most fruitful within the enterprise. And so that was kind of the low hanging proof that we can go tackle, but we want to have known exactly where to go if those processes hadn't been”

“Yeah, man. Carl's supposed to be my buddy. Supposed to be thrown to the softball. He's a tough man. He's a tough guy. I may have to have a word with him ahead of our board meeting a couple weeks. But yeah, I mean, listen, it's a totally fair question. The category is one of the fastest growing software categories in the world right now. RPA is growing as a group 60, 70% year over year. UiPath is obviously well above that click, continue to capture market share. But what's interesting to me is that this is a product market that's been around for a decade, maybe more. And we didn't create the category. And it really didn't take off until the beginning of 2016. And I think this resulted of the convergence of three real market horse here. And the first maturity of our technology. So, you know, I talked about the core of what we do is computer vision and the ability to correlate objects and elements on a screen. It's a really”

“Electoral champions. What's interesting, we fast forward today over 20 years later, that paradigm isn't the case. Today a computer is no longer the world champion, and actually neither is human. Today, the best chess matches in the world are played by a combination or team of humans and computers. And what's even more interesting than that to me is that the best teams have no grandmaster and no supercomputer. And so what they really have is just mediocre of both and really great teamwork. And so to me, this examplifies that a team of human plus robot working together beats any standalone person or machine. And this is exactly our belief in a nutshell. We believe that the combination of knowledge workers and robots will transform the enterprise. And if I wanted to give you just a little bit of data behind why I don't believe in this notion of job replacement, it's because this is a storyline that economists.”

“Yeah, it's a great question. We live in a world of analogies, so rather than just give you a simple, yeah, it's replacing or no, it's not. Let me tell you an interesting story about a Russian chess grandmaster, really the greatest chess player to ever live, a guy by the name of Gary Kasparov. So this is a guy who from 1986 until his retirement in 2005 was ranked the number one chess player in the world for some ridiculous amount of time. It was like 225 out of 228 straight months. I don't know if you recall, the 97, this guy lost to IBM supercomputer, deep blue. And this match was the first defeat of a raiding world chess champion by a computer under actual tournament conditions ever. And this created a ton of press and news about the race between man and machine. It's obvious why it was significant. This was a sign that AI was catching up to human intelligence and could defeat any one of humans break into”

“If not thousands of employees conducting what are largely data extraction, data input, related tasks, or things that require simple decision-making based on pattern recognition, things like approving a loan underwriting process. And it's crazy to me because these people are highly paid, they're intellectual, and you'd think that they'd want to be doing higher level work. Every time I hear about some of the processes that enterprises have, their employees doing, I always think about the Greek network Sisyphus. I don't know if you're familiar with Greek mythology or not, but the quick introduction to Sisyphus and his story was a cruel Greek king who was punished by having to repeatedly roll a huge stone up a hill, only to have it rolled down again as soon as he brought it to the summit, right? So it's tormenting. That's exactly what all these employees are faced with, right? Imagine you work Counts Payable Group, you get a stack of invoices in your email every day, 100, 200, you have to pull out.”

“It's fast, accurate, traceable, and cost effective. If I had to put it simple, it's kind of like an Excel macro that runs on a mainframe, web app, Citrix environment, or any desktop application, really. And the reason that's so powerful is because, well, there are over 600 million knowledge workers around the world. 40% of the things that they're doing are super repetitive and mundane by nature. And UiPath can help automatically transform those workflows into something that's done by robots, allowing them to focus on a higher value work. I spend a ton of my time and burn a customers across a very broad set of industries and banking, financial services, public sector, healthcare, as well as domains within just any generic global 2000 company finance HR procurement. And in almost every meeting, these customers come in and share where their bottlenecks are, where they face a few pain points, how many manual processes they have within their organizations. It's mind-blowing. They often have tons.”

“Yeah, most people hear the acronym RPA. They say robotic process automation. Is that like mechanical arms in the Midwest building some sort of car, something of that nature? It's a very misleading acronym. Most people don't even pick up on that. It's actually a software company. But the truth of the matter is people and customers come to us because we've got the ability to digitize systems in days without having to rip things out or build out APIs using thousands of developer hours. At the core, what we've built is computer vision technology that allows us to see what's on person's screen in addition to mimicking human interaction on the keyboard and mouse. And then our bots can go and actually execute those workflows based on what they've seen people doing. We can take a routine job in finance and accounting function, for example, codified into a set of machine readable instructions and then replicated it really large scale.”

“I always listen to some advice that I got early on in my career was intuitive. Our CEO there, Brad Smith, former CEO, I should say, he always said in life you got to weigh the things that are rubber and those that are crystal. Things that are rubber bounce back after some period of time, you'll never think about it again. Things that are crystal hit the ground shatter and you can't necessarily recover them. And, you know, I think things like a significant other, things like attending your kids' graduation or dance rehearsal, being at your parents' 60th, you know, those are things that are crystal. You're not really going to get them back. And to me, when I did that, that internal test to move into New York thing, going for the girl felt like something that was crystal.”

“Around the table, and I told them what was going on with my girlfriend. I said, you know, I've moved to New York. I don't know what I'm really going to do yet, but I'm really solving for two things. First, I need to be in New York. Second, if possible, I'd like to be in and or around enterprise software. That's what I've been doing. And he said, well, listen, the New York Tech ecosystem is vast. It's a little bit smaller for enterprise, but there is this one company that's European right now, but they're moving headquarters. You got to meet the founder. He's amazing. And I think you'll appreciate the value that their product drives. And I was just blown away by him, his character, his vision, and the role to be his right hand and help him drive this thing forward was an amazing opportunity. And so I jumped on it.”

“More career oriented. So I made the decision first that I was going to make a move to New York. I followed her. And that was a tough decision to go through because I loved what I was doing. And I happened to know a couple of people around the table that were looking at funding the Series B of financing for this company. And one of my good friends, Alex Perland, was one of the people.”

“My transition, unlike most people, had nothing to do with professional ambition whatsoever. I was working for an enterprise software expansion stage focused venture capital Firm out in Boston called OpenView Venture Partners. And I was there for four years working with a good friend and someone who I respect so much, partnered there by the name of Mackie Craven. We're focused on the cloud infrastructure and data technology component practice of the firm. We were doing distance. She got a really amazing job offer in New York. And I don't know if you've ever done the long distance relationship thing. And even though Boston, New York isn't that far of a distance, it's still distance. So it creates a whole bunch of challenges. You kind of need to make a decision. And I think for the first time in my life, I chose something personal over something that was”
