“We've had a really strong reaction inbox this week from viewers, listeners, readers just saying in their view what he said was not just wrong. It was clearly racist from the beginning, clearly hugely offensive. And a lot of people, I think, have been shocked, disappointed, very disappointed that Rishi Sunak took what seemed like forever to acknowledge that it was a racist remark. He seems to have been bounced into doing it because Kemi Badnock, black female member of the cabinet, she said so on social media in her view, was clearly racist. And it has been a very problematic week for Rishi Sunak. One of the reasons why, and it's raised again though, for Labour, this question of Diane Abbott, who to many people is a complete political icon, first black MP, very strong character, very well known, who has got incredible fortitude in terms of dealing with abuse for years and years and years.”

“Happy birthday, I guess. Much in that speed. It's interesting that though, because actually Mark Jacoford had a massive profile, had a huge profile during the pandemic, he became somebody who, for many people, was a sort of much loved person who was not being pushed around by Westminster government. But we'll see, I think, you know, as you say, Chris, one of the interesting things about this is that we've got a generational shift. We had a very big character in Nicola Sturgeon in Scotland, long gone. We had somebody who became extremely well known, Mark Drakeford in Wales, now also on the way out. I think it's a really open question as to whether or not the next generation of devolved leaders will ever have the same kind of profile, not because just because they're different political characters, but because the pandemic put them absolutely in the spotlight in a different way.”

“I think he felt the need to tell his story almost as a sort of form of therapy for him, but also, I think, to try to explain and create empathy for people, children who grew up in any home, in any environment, in any family, with violence being inflicted on them in that way. And I think the book sort of is almost like it's a sort of a call for understanding, I felt. And he's not sitting in his, you know, in his grand estate asking people to feel sorry for him. I didn't think. And, you know, something like this, obviously a book like this, it gets headlines around the world. It takes a long time to sort of organize these kinds of interviews. “I think it did, and you'll hear more about that when we published the full interview. But I think there's no doubt that this was a huge step to take. There were other people he knew from school at that time who almost sort of asked him to write it. And he's someone also who's had several marriages, he's had trouble relationships, and it's very clear, it was very clear speaking to him that he sees some of the pain of what was inflicted on him as a very young child at school is part of the reason why he has had personal struggles with all sorts of things. “Think that's absolutely right, and I think we've seen that in the sort of frenzy around the photograph even before the saga of the photograph, the frenzy about where was, where is Kate Middleton. And social media in many ways is not the real world, but it is a huge part of the world now. And it was so interesting to hear him talk about that because I think also it's quite instructive because it is true that the nature of press intrusion, at least in this country, has changed there are, you know, tougher rules around the paparazzi and intrusion, the courts also. Now he, although many people will have heard of him for his famous eulogy at his sister's funeral in 1997, where he blasted the press and promised to protect his nephews, William and Harry. In 2024, he is very careful and very determined not to join in speculation, gossip, rumour, sentiment about the specifics of their lives or about the rift between the two of them. He was just not going to get involved in giving a, I suppose what people would call a running commentary on that situation. I did, though, ask him about something specific. Was the hideous intrusion that his sister suffered? Less or more potent in terms of difficulty and risk than the kind of pressure and all the online frenzy and speculation and all the sort of vitriol and horrors of that that the current Princess of Wales is going through.”

But one of the things that is so extraordinary about the book is just imagining now in 2024 that that kind of thing could have happened in living people's memory, this sort of conspiracy of silence and this sort of stifling atmosphere in the aristocracy at that point where this tradition of sending particularly little boys, but you know, Princess Diana was also sent away, but sending very young children away to school where they would be out of sight, possibly out of mind, but potentially in danger from predators.
