“Or just read the book. You don't even have to buy it. Go to the library. Yeah, you can. I don't want to make this a contingent incentive here.”

“It's all connected. Well, I mean, I'll see your Lion King and raise you a horse. I mean, it's what makes you horses don't have those kinds of thoughts. Horses don't say, what's my sentence? Was I better today than yesterday? And yet, too often we think that human beings are simply slower, smaller, better smelling horses. And that the only way we'll do anything is if you toss us a carrot or threaten us with a stick. And that's just wrong. We can argue whether it's wrong morally. The science says that it's the wrong pathway to achievement and performance.”

“Seoul is, I think, our capacity to see that our lives are about something more than simply the day-to-day and that our lives, that we're here for a purpose, that it could be connected to religion or not, but that there is a purpose of your being here. That's really how I look at it. And you can do that either believing in an organized religion or not. We're not. Right.”

“Yeah, I think that that's how we are. We want to move toward mastery. We want to do something that matters and that endures. And again, this is not what's interesting, I think, to me is that a lot of these spiritual practices, which have endured for a long time, there's actually a lot of scientific support that this is actually how humans perform at a higher level. And I think that's really interesting. The world of our kind of a gut instincts, the world of spiritual practices, and the world of science are kind of coming together to say, okay, maybe we can lead our lives in a different way this time.”

“And that's how we make progress. We do it slowly, step by step by step. That's the only way we do any kind of personal change, any kind of organizational change. And think about, okay, what's a good way to... For people to find that North Star.”

“Not preserving the Union. Your other question is really important because that's kind of a lofty thing, but that doesn't help us get better and move toward mastery day to day. And so the second question is, and I find this really useful for myself, is ask yourself at the end of the day, was I better today than yesterday? Because that's really all we can ask for. And what I have found in my own, this has been really helpful to me, this one. What I have found when I ask myself at the end of the day was I better today than yesterday, is that many times the answer is no. But what I find, which is interesting, and I'm curious to see other people's reaction to this, is that I find that the answer is rarely no two days in a row. That if the answer is no when I go to sleep.”

“Good sentence. FDR had a sentence. He lifted us out of a great depression and helped us win a world war. Awesome sentence. And she went into Kennedy and said, listen, a great man is a sentence. A great person is a sentence. And I find that really useful in sort of orienting our lives toward purpose. And ask, you know, we ask ourselves, what's your sentence? And I think that's really clarifying for people.”

“No, it means that you have many people who are very purpose oriented from the inception, thanks to their environment, thanks to the way that they were raised, etc. But I think there's something, I think the alarm really goes off at 60. I don't think you have to be 60, but I think when you start reckoning with your own mortality, that is a moment when I think people really begin saying, okay, what's it all about?”

“100 boomers having those kinds of conversations. Oh my gosh, I'm 60. What am I going to do for the final chapter of my life? When am I going to step up and do something that matters? To use your phrase, when am I going to live my best life? And I think that now that seems a little on the touchy-feely side, but if you look at the numbers, like I'm a numbers guy, if you look at the numbers, this is going on at a scale.”

“You got it. You got the second stage, right? So they're like, oh my gosh, have that alarm. And then they say 60 is not old. And it's not. I mean, God willing, you know, knockwood, you could be around for a while. And so they say, oh, well, maybe I have 25 good years left. They breathe a sigh of relief. And then they go to stage three when they look back 25 years to when they're 35”

“And I think there's a sense that our culture more broadly has lost its mind. And so you have that going on. At the same time, you have people looking at what's going on and saying, what's happening here? Isn't there a better way to lead our lives? And I think that that idea, that idea that there's got to be a better way, I think that idea is palpable out there right now. It's not on the front page of the tabloid magazines, but it's out there around kitchen tables where people are having these conversations. And I think it's pushed a big part by the baby boomers. I think the baby boomers are about to unleash a tsunami of purpose as more and more of them hit age 60.”

“If we start with a different notion of human nature that we're active and engaged and curious, then that leads you in very different directions. Basically, what it means is that you don't need the carrot and the stick. You've got to give people a lot of freedom. You've got to help them move to get better at stuff because that's one of the most satisfying things in life. And also connect them to a purpose larger than themselves.”

“I think it's a combination of things. Number one is that it depends on the environment that we're in. The environment that we're in shapes how we behave hugely. We sometimes overplay the importance of innate qualities when we explain behavior and underplay the importance of context. That's part of it. The other thing is that we're an accumulation of experiences. So if you have the chance to be autonomous and self-directed early on, then you're more likely to continue it. So if you go to, I mean, a lot of our schools are pretty controlling and carrot and stick oriented. And so if you sort of go through that regime and then you go into a company organization that's very carrot and stick oriented, eventually you begin to say, okay, I guess this is how the world works.”

“And one of my favorite exercises, I mean, there are all kinds of great exercises in meaning, all kinds of incredible things. Like, for instance, on gratitude, Martin Seligman at the University of Pennsylvania came up with what he calls the gratitude visit, where you think of somebody in your life who is important to you, but whom you haven't properly thanked. You write that person a letter expressing your thanks, and then you go there and deliver it to them in person. And people have, again, I've gotten emails from readers saying, you know what, I read this and I decided to do it. And of course, the person who's the recipient of the gratitude finds it this incredibly moving experience. And then they are triggered to think who they are. And so you have this kind of daisy chain of goodness. There are other things where you, one of my exercises that I like is to picture yourself at 90.”

“And so I think it's ultimately a glorious thing. And there are ways, you know, for some people it's not that comfortable of a conversation. There are things that people can do that I've encouraged them to do in the book. Because what I tried to do in the book is not only lay out this grand theory and then say, oh, later you're on your own, but to try to give people a whole array of tools and tips and exercises and things like that.”

“Yeah, they're the ones who have the abilities that we need in the economy. Those are to be the ones who are going to be flourishing. That doesn't mean that Computer programmers are going to be scrubbing counters, but it does mean that those computer programmers, and if you talk to computer programmers, you realize this, they have to be able to do empathic work, understand the customers better, be able to move across disciplines in a symphonic way, have a design sensibility, be able to talk in narrative terms about what they're doing”

“I mean, I think ultimately that's what it is to be human at some level. Now, again, we didn't always have the ability necessarily or the luxury of being able to talk about that, being able to integrate that fully in our lives. When scraping for survival, it's harder to think of. It's not impossible, but it's harder to think about that. But now we can be conversations like this. People can have conversations around their dining room tables, kitchen tables about all these things. And the collective force of that is actually pretty amazing.”

And so someone who has a band of empathy that isn't very high is never going to become mother Teresa. But all of us can move to the upper end through a whole array of things. I think starting early, as you suggest, is really important too.”

“Well, there are degrees in creating video games is in many ways this classic kind of whole-minded experience. But again, I don't want my kids playing only games. I don't say you must have a 100% diet of games. I want all my kids doing 100% of any. I want my kids spending all their time reading 19th century novels. Absolutely. I don't think that's healthy either. Absolutely. I think a mixed diet of these things. And I think that especially for adults, a lot of learning is taking place in the form of a game, basically a simulation. You know, how do you learn how to fly a plane? Do you sit in a class and take notes or do you get into a flight simulator? Absolutely. I want my pilot having taken the flight simulator.”

What's happening is that people draw out of the left side of the brain. There's a famous book called Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain that charted this out. “Symphony is the ability to see the big picture, connect the dots, combine disparate things into something new. It is in many ways kind of the signature ability. It's the best predictor of star performance in the workplace. It is, to my mind, a fundamentally artistic ability. That is, I mean, visual artists in particular are very good at seeing how the pieces come together. And I experienced this myself by trying to learn how to draw. Having taken no fine arts classes in high school, no fine arts classes in college, no fine arts classes as an adult being the well-rounded guy that I am. And I took a five-day drawing course in New York City that allowed me to learn how to see and how to see things symphonically and how to see the big picture.”

“Amen. I mean, that's how it works. Now, the thing is, business is growing ever so slowly to recognize that. So business leadership is in some ways about storytelling. So you have now business schools ever so slowly saying, oh, we need to bring in some narrative. We need to bring in some storytelling because if you want to lead a business or lead an organization, you have to be effective in charting out, setting out a vision and having a beginning, middle, and an end. And people want to know where increasingly now want to know where products and services came from. So you can buy a dole banana, dull organic banana that has a little sticker on it. The sticker has a number. You go to that number, go on the website, plug in that number. You can see where the bananas were grown, the kind of farm that it was on. Wow. Farmers who grew it because people want to know the story of how that product got from the ground to their store.”

“You know, they say, oh, you're not going to believe it. First this happened, then that happened, then that happened. They narrate. And somehow in our kind of serious society narration and storytelling has been banished as soft, as fake, as not serious, when in fact it's fundamental to how human beings process the world. And you see it migrating to all kinds of businesses. Companies are using the backstory of a product or service as a way to differentiate it in the marketplace.”

“That part of it, but also there's a design decision when someone goes into an emergency room, what the configuration of that room is. There's a design decision when you go and you check in at a hotel. All these things have a design decision. Some of them are good and some of them aren't. And with design, it really is a question. We're not trying to turn everyone into some star designer to go on be a judge on Project Runway or something like that. What we're doing is we're trying to make people literate. And this is a great way, just a little notebook is a great way, inexpensive way to make people help people become much more literate about design.”
