  1. It's a company that's coming out of Y Commodor called Skyways. It's a drone company. I said yes, two reasons. One, it's in our everyday economy thesis around transportation. And the second one was the demo just blew me away. It was just awesome.

  2. Well, I'm going to do one plug, which is next to you's new newsletter. It's called Gotham Voices, which highlights the best content from the New York Tech community. Another one called Hearing Voices, which is actually devoted around voice computing that Matt Hartman from BetaWorks calls together.

  3. I would say only sometimes, but most often. I mean, I think other times you can see things that other investors don't see or the metrics weren't there. You might actually hit the right metrics, but the market moved on you.

  4. My favorite book is Look Home or angel because it's so deep and so rich, and I've read it more times than any other book, actually.

  5. Yeah, so the idea is that when you have a new platform shift, right? So if you go from PCs to mobile or mobile to hopefully hear voice computing, the first kind of level of application just replicates what the other one was, what happened in the previous one, right? And so a lot of the first mobile loss were just doing what you could do on the desktop web. I think similar you've seen here with a lot of the skills which have been released. They're just really skills what you could do on mobile, right? It's order nature. Yeah, order. Order a pizza from dominoes, right? Like just as one of the first apps on iPhone was order a pizza from dominoes because

  6. We'll have to see. I don't know. Again, you can look to how the mobile played out for potential kind of indications of what might work here. I think Apple did a good job. I mean, they did a great job on the mobile setting that it was kind of a managed marketplace of Apple stars. It wasn't the free wide range like kind of Windows PC era, right? But it was a kind of a managed marketplace where they had a heavy hand in and in turn collect a big tax on developers. So I don't know if I have a crystal ball there actually.

  7. Environment so people can actually spend real resources developing them. I think the other category is around connecting maybe a bunch of different disparate ecosystems, right? So we're talking a lot about Amazon here, but if you think about Google Home and Samsung's going to release something, Apple just announced the homepod, right? Like all these other players are announcing their own platforms. A consumer in their bedroom or in their kitchen isn't going to want to talk to the different device differently. And so there's probably some area for startups to kind of be connective tissue around a cohesive experience.

  8. I think maybe it's in two different places, right? So the challenges right now with voice computing are really around monetization and distribution, right? So if you think of the analogy in the App Store and when the iPhone was released 10 years ago literally, right, you had serious developers who were spending serious time making serious applications. The first early ones were just toys, just like the skills are today on the Echo devices, Alexa-enabled skills. But over time, because Apple set up a system where you had real distribution for these apps and real monetization, that allowed a developer ecosystem to really thrive. We don't have those yet today. And so hopefully either A startups will be able to come in and fill in some of those missing pieces, or Amazon will enable both kind of monetization and distribution to really encourage richer.

  9. Yeah, so I think we're just at an earlier point on the Gardner hype cycle curve, right? We're still kind of approaching up towards kind of peak expectations. So I think we're a little bit earlier on. And then I think the other thing is right now, and this is, I think, part of the challenge, and we can talk some of the challenges with the category. Amazon right now is just the big behemoth, and they own so much of the stack. And so from a VC perspective, I think one big question is around where is there opportunity for startups to play within kind of voice computing ecosystem?

  10. Yeah, so why now? I think partially is around initially spurred by Amazon, right? They had this echo device, which became a sleeper runaway hit, right? So 10 million devices were shipped in 2016, somewhere between 20 to 40 million are going to be shipped in here in 2017. You put on top of that their Alexa everywhere strategy where they're embedding Alexa in third party hardware devices. So you're going to have literally tens and tens of millions of devices which are connected to the internet in people's homes and then accessible by the most natural user interface possible, which is the voice. If you think about that like pervasive connectedness to the internet, like to me that is a remarkable transformation. And by the end of the year, literally 50 million devices in people's homes are going to have that kind of connection. Like that's really powerful.

  11. I think it's very much market driven, right? We see with every big wave of innovation since like the 18th century, it has a similar trajectory, right? You lay the infrastructure a few decades and decades later you have broader kind of social impacts which occur. And so I think with the internet, it's no different. We have the big companies like Apple, Facebook, Amazon that have built this infrastructure. And now we think this is the time where we're seeing more and more companies which are going to build upon an infrastructure to like affect our every single day lives.

  12. Yeah, sure. So I would say we have a little twist in thematic focus, but at the core, what we're doing is very much the same. We're high conviction, hands-on seed investors. We lead our co-lead rounds and check sizes range from a couple hundred thousand to about a million dollars initially. But now we're applying, you know, I call this a thematic lens, which we're calling the everyday economy. And so we want to invest in founders who are redesigning daily living for everyday people. So if you think about it, there's like seven different categories where people spend their time and money every single day. It's food, home, transportation, work and money, health, apparel, and entertainment. We want to invest in companies where founders are reimagining how these everyday activities can be changed by technology.

  13. Thanks. Yeah, we're really excited. You have our third fund. It's a $50 million fund and excited to continue to invest at the seed stage here at Next Fear.

  14. Yeah, so I think I had two mentors within the industry, Rich Lewandowitt, who was a massive now at Avalon and Mike Terrell at Venrock, and they're very different investors, one very intuitive-based and one very kind of Hellenically driven. I've tried to take the both of those, incorporate that into my own thought processing and decision making. But then what I realized, I think, you know, over the last couple years, is that I have tended, you know, given I'm an internet marketer by background, I've tended to make investments that have some type of marketing theme. So they're either marketing business, sales and marketing businesses themselves on the B2B side or on the consumer side. There's actually some kind of unique distribution advantage for the consumer service or even the entrepreneur.

  15. Well, I think we wanted to design a process that allowed for outliers to get through, right? I mean, we're investing in a business where you're not looking for the mean or median along a bell curve, right? But rather an outlier within a portfolio. So you want to be able to have a process that investment decision-making process that allows for a little bit of tension in different perspectives on investments to be able to get through. So we actually have a two-step voting process where we vote very early on when we meet with entrepreneurs that we actually vote again when we make the final decision-making process.

  16. Well, I mean, we borrowed a couple things from Benrock. If you look at our, we're actually next to your write an investment memo for every single seed investment we make. That template looks a lot like Venrock's. And then, you know, some of our investment decisioning processes are similar. And so, you know, some of that, again, some of that training that we've had at previous firms, we've borrowed and brought in to incorporate with our own touch, of course, into NextView.

  17. Yeah, so I mean, so mascad is a first time fun. And I really saw the benefits at being at a firm where you really had a blank slate, right? You could do anything you didn't have a past history of both legacy investments as well as kind of legacy processes. And then going to Venrock, it was almost an opposite situation where here you had this storied firm that's been around for 50 years and firm that's been around 50 years has been doing something right, right? And so you learn the kind of classic training and the nuts of bolts of venture, you know, everything from investment processes and decision making processings to just kind of the operations of running a firm. And so when we started next few together between Rob, Lee, and I, the three of us had been at four different venture firms. And so had the benefit of actually kind of being able to cherry-pick some of the best things from four different firms and incorporate that into our own culture and their own.

  18. I think it wasn't until we started NextView together that it was at the point where what do I want to be doing for the rest of my life? And I realized that I just want to be at the point of company creation over and over and over again. And the way that I can do that the most often is being a venture investor and on top of that being a seed venture investor. You get to get involved in the projects at the earliest stages. And so I just want to be a part of those processes over and over again. And then with NextView, starting a firm, we've got this kind of meta thing going where it's a couple decade endeavor for us to firm from the ground up

  19. Yeah, so it was a little bit by accident, actually. So turning back to clock a bit, entrepreneur turned VC. In the late 90s, think web 1.0 era. I co-founded an email marketing company. And we ended up selling that company to About.com. And so, you know, after business school, I was trying to think about what I should do next. And a couple of the angel investors in my company four said, hey, they had started a fund. It was a first time fund. It was called Masthead Venture Partners. And they invited me to stay and either hang out their firm for a little while, either go to a portfolio company, start a new company from inside the firm. And the next thing I had known, I had been there three years, liked being on the venture side of things, and was getting recruited to Venrock. So I ended up joining Venrock in 2007.
