“Well, I would give you a fire answer of all of the above. There are probably three that are near and dearest to my heart, so that's the closest you're going to get. Gimlet, because it was my first. And I love those guys, Alex and Matt, are just awesome. The Kano team, brilliant, they're just, again, Jan and Alex are superb individuals. I love their vision. And then Jewel bots. I'm in love with the product. I'm in love with the mission and what they're trying to accomplish. And I think Sarah and Brooke are super innovative and have a big, big dream.”

“Magic Mountain And it's just an interesting psychological look at what was going on in Europe kind of in advance of the outbreak of World War II. Plus Switzerland is such a gorgeous place being really in that time and place is”

“I think there is, again, because there's so many industries here, finance, fashion, media, that have had women in senior executive roles. There's just more examples. And I think as a result, and because the tech sector has evolved from being purely about technological solved problems to technologically enabled problem solving, there are a lot of folks who are dealing with real-world issues in New York and trying to figure out how to solve those problems.”

“And how can we all succeed? And I think some of that just stems from New York's nature of being a city that has a lot of industries that come together and they're used to working closely. And then there's there are many more female founders in New York.”

“That has been remarkable to me. And so many of the conversations that I have with people begin with, how can I help you? And peppered throughout our, oh, I just thought of another person I need to introduce you to, or they might have some ideas on this, or I think I can help you accomplish that. There's just a real we're in this together.”

“And that's been the most fun part of my journey in this past year. You know, and then comparing the startup ecosystem in San Fran versus New York, it's obviously so much smaller here in New York than it is in San Francisco. But the vibrancy and the intensity and the enthusiasm are absolutely equal. And I think too there's this incredible competitive spirit in New York where I laugh when I hear it and laugh in a really good collaborative way, but like they want to take on the valley and there's no way they're seating the title of Innovation Capital of the World to California. So there's a real competitiveness to make it happen, but there's a level of collaboration here.”

“Not we'll see where they go. The CEO role is really fun and exhilarating and presents multiple challenges and roller coasters on a daily basis. You know, I think over the course of this year I've gained confidence and a much better ability at throwing an idea out there and eliciting feedback from the team and really helping having them help and come up with a better solution. I think it's a natural tendency for CEOs, particularly in startups, to think they have all the answers and you don't. And it's one, a really slow and lonely process if you're the one trying to solve all the problems. And then two, you know, there was a recent blog post just talking about the nature of equity in startups is really changing because your entire team is really contributing to”

“Joined October fifteenth of twenty fourteen after arriving in New York City two days earlier on the Red Eye from San Francisco with merely two suitcases of blow up air mattress and my dog.”

“It's one, it's a blast and it's fun to be in an environment where there are so many other creative and technical problem solvers. You know, that ability to just sit down, shoot the breeze, try to solve a problem, see how they're trackling like customer acquisition. And then this is a really visual place too. I find New York to be highly visible and BetaWorks is no exception. We're very design oriented, so it's fun getting that type of feedback. And then frankly, like we have an incredible base of people here at BetaWorks to test new ideas on and new products and new interpretations and just get their feedback before we throw it into the larger universe.”

“I think it's a great and perfect question. There will be a lot of disappointment, and again, the disappointment is the SEC will pass again and missed a mandate on passing these rules. We're all waiting. For our business, it's a huge opportunity that will just be further delayed. But we do have incredible backers supporting us in BetaWorks and SV Angel, Lair Hippo. And we work with a lot of technology startup founders, and that business will continue to be there.”

“Sure. You know, I think, one, there are great moral and psychological benefits, which in a lot of cases these businesses wouldn't exist if they hadn't had early adopters and customers who left an incumbent solution to take a chance on their business. And they've stuck with them, they've supported, they've introduced friends to the opportunity. So I think that's one great positive reinforcing cycle. And then the other is there was a study done a while back by Bain that shows customers who are owners of a business spend more, they refer more, they talk about the business more, and they're more loyal. So those are concrete reasons for why you'd want to invite your customers and community to invest in your company.”

“I mean, I'm glad you brought that key finding up. You know, we found that almost every respondent had two reasons, if not more, one in addition to financial return. And a really, really big one was supporting the company's mission and the founders. And another huge one was spurring economic growth and innovation. You know, Americans are amazing citizens. And there is a real commitment to kind of growing our economy and helping people realize their dreams and crowdfunding can do that. And it's a real motivation for why people want to invest.”

“It's funny. I was talking with someone about this this morning. And, you know, there are so many undercurrents, those psychological and just real financial. But one is it's really difficult to use traditional forms of finance to find capital. And the crowd has provided a huge and deep pool of capital to help businesses grow, whether it's through peer-to-peer lending or it's through rewards-based funding. And I think that also points to this need in a highly technological world where technology is disintermediating relationships to find a connection and to support a cause or a person that you believe in and can help you find meaning to what you're doing and crowdfunding is Incredible at that.”

“Think it's going to be a sympathetic relationship. There are instances when companies need 50,000, $100,000, two hundred fifty million dollars to grow in scale The crowd is never going to provide that capital. And I think VCs provide important seats at the table roles in helping guide founders and provide advice as they go through those stages. But I do see in what, you know, we're pioneering is this ability to work together where VC leads the round, they set the investment terms, and the crowd provides part of the financing. That model will continue to grow, but I don't see it displacing VC.”

“In a marketplace, we've really focused on quality deal flow and have built our investor base through companies. And so it's It is a challenge to find high quality companies who want to take the time and invite their investors to become owners. We think it's a morally rewarding thing to do and also an incredible thing for business. And then with Title III and expanding beyond small and medium-sized businesses, again, both sides of that marketplace, getting quality businesses to find us and finding the investors who want to support those businesses.”

“out twofold and thank you for that question. You know one is obviously coming to the site and supporting the companies that are raising on the platform, suggesting other companies for the platform also will be fantastic. And then when Title III rules are implemented, which we're highly optimistic that that's going to happen tomorrow, actively participating with us in equity raises for a whole range of companies. Like we think Title III is transformative, not just for tech startups, but also for the broader small and medium-sized businesses across the United States. Is a really powerful opportunity for them to connect with people locally in their community and also on a national basis who support and understand what they're doing to find the capital that they need to build and grow their business. So come on board and join us.”

“That's astounding. So that was an incredibly encouraging statistic to me, and they overwhelmingly want to invest. And then the other thing we were curious about that totally panned out in the results was how many people are highly educated and financially sophisticated yet are still prevented from investing. And the reason we wanted to test that thesis is UK equity crowdfunding laws have a different sophistication level and it is based on financial sophistication and knowledge, not your income and your net worth. And these results clearly pointed that there were a lot of people who know a lot about technology companies who have excellent educations and would consider themselves financially sophisticated, meaning like they understand financial statements. They understand how to value a business. They were prevented from investing.”

“For me, really, our three key headline findings underscore it all. And the first is, you know, for your listeners who aren't familiar with Mattermark, Mattermark's CEO, Danielle, is also a woman. So you have two companies sponsoring the survey, both with female CEOs, and we probably have a disproportionately high percentage of women who are following what our companies are doing. And even with that high percentage, women still only made up 22% of our respondents. So it just goes to show how far we have to go in tech gender diversity. And likewise, we had 24% of our respondents identify as minorities, which when you look at studies on BC decision makers, you know, only two points of decision makers at VC firms are Latino or African Americans.”

“Until Title III is passed and even Title III as drafted could be prohibited for other companies or companies based in other countries coming into the US market. You know, that being said, I know there's a UK-based company and an Israeli-based company that are looking to move into the US market. It is deep. It is rich and it is possible for non-US-based companies to raise money from U.S. investors. He did that for Kano computing. So yeah, I think some of them will be moving into the market.”

“It is a banner first week. But, you know, they were going on records saying they're worried about investor protections. They think there's an incredible opportunity and likelihood that investors are going to be fleeced and take advantage of, that with all of the hype about potential to invest in the next Facebook or Uber, people are going to put their entire life savings in companies and then lose it. And I think the maturity of the UK equity crowdfunding environment has given the SEC some confidence that that's not going to happen. And I also believe platforms like Choir take our role as an intermediary really seriously. And we know that if we don't do a good job on the quality side, embedding companies, the whole industry could go up and smoke and that's not good for anyone.”

“You know, I think that is one of the great conundrums hoping tomorrow is going to change all of that. You know, as recently as, you know, several months ago, some of the commissioners were on record. And even if you listened to Gimlet's podcast on season one of startup.”

“Minimum investment is $2,500, so again, despite the accreditation limits and the fact that only 3% of American households can invest, it is an approachable amount that makes it easy to support founders and then will support larger investments. You know, we've had a request for $250,000.”

“Sure, so why are right now as an equity crowdfunding platform and we work with venture backed companies to enable a portion of their raise to come from their community? And by community we mean individuals who are already customers and consumers of their product, but also fans who are out there and just think what they're doing is incredible or even individuals who just love the founders and want to support their vision and their mission.”

“I've been in love with New York City since I was a kid growing up in Oklahoma and came out here, started meeting with companies, met the Beta Work Skies, and really fell in love with choir, which was AlphaWorks at the time. And this whole concept of having community as investors.”

“It's actually an interesting journey, and I can give you the very long winded version, which would take the entire podcast. But I have been an entrepreneur since I was a little kid. I was 12 years old when I started my first business, which was a summer day camp with my best friend. So I'm right from the get-go learn the importance of having a great founder or co-founder, but was really lucky to do some management consulting, investment banking. and then helped take a company public, an economics consulting firm eight years of doing that, and really got the bug to get into tech. This was back in 2010. Things were going wild. Kicksy in San Francisco, and they make video games, stayed there for four years. And after that, thought, you know, it would be great to branch out, do something on my own.”
