And so, you know, the way I like to think of this is really in terms of this one sort of fact that I quote in the book, that is, 75% of our brain's development in terms of the growth of our brains, its final weight. 75% of that growth happens outside of the womb as we are sort of out in the world interacting with the stuff that's around us. And so 75% of her neurological development happens in a context that is culturally conditioned. And what you can see as we grow and learn is that we become sort of fundamentally different sorts of people. So the ways in which we become self-aware, the values that we internalize, the ways in which we learn to sort of control our body or sort of attune our senses to the world around us, all of that is shaped in very profound ways by culture, which is the environments that surround us, the sort of ways in which people behave.”

2. “And actually in that broadness, I think lies anthropology's real strength because what the discipline has really become is one that tries to learn from the vast scope of human experience and the vast scope of human diversity, both sort of historically, but especially today, and to take all of that as sort of fundamental expressions off our humanity. So at one point, it was a rather colonial discipline and it was really thinking about different cultures very hierarchically, but what it's evolved into in the modern day is a way of looking at otherness, looking at difference, looking at things that might be sort of fundamentally destabilizing to how we live and how we think and what we value. And saying that is just integral, just as human, just as fundamental to the human experiences as our own experiences and our own values and our own perspectives, we're always seeing the world from a specific”
