“Yes, I can see that clearly I triggered you. And just remember that sometimes trigger language can be positive. Sometimes you trigger people to pay attention and to think different thoughts. So it's not always a negative.”

“Well, I do want to sit down with you both. I know how many people watch this or listen to this podcast. I know how much it matters I know that you created a phenomenon here, and I'd like to know more about it. But this is a joy for me because you sound Alistair like the conservative and Rory. You sound like a more left person. So I'm literally having whiplash between the two of you.”

“There is some hope, and if people like the three of us, rather than finding the ways to provoke, if we use our skills for good, as a student once said to me, if we use them to bring people together side by side, sleeves rolled up, and by the way, that is the actual language, because I want people to visualize it, standing together side by side, roll up your sleeves, and do something. You hear some Republican words in there, some Democrat words in there, everyone hears what they want to hear, and they'll make our country make our society and make the world a better place.”

“One of them kept insulting the senator. The students got to see the shit that happens behind closed doors, and then the coolest thing of all, the Democratic leader of one of the key committees and the Republican leader, both arm in arm. And instead of this ugliness, they got to see two people who generally respect each other, who generally work together. Their heads were spinning, seeing how America really works. So I say to you, I'm very negative, but there is some sunlight.”

“Whole lot of them are. Come on. And I want people who want to learn and I want to be there to show them. So I've got a student with me now at the convention who I'm taking to all these various events so that he can make up his mind. I took them to the primaries in New Hampshire. They've been with me to Washington half a dozen times to show them the inside and the coolest thing of all and I should not say this on your podcast. So this is me blowing in my own career. We are having dinner in Paris, France, in the 80th anniversary of Normandy. All these centers around, all these congressmen around, they know me. And they're like, wow, running into you in Paris. I say, I got something even better. I got West Point Cadets. You talk to them. The lead Democrat on armed services gave them an hour and 15 minutes. One of the lead Republicans in messaging gave them an hour. A bunch of congressmen came who were enjoying themselves too much.”

“Just don't have balance. Third issue is at the end of the day, I get very weak. So trying to go upstairs is a nightmare for me. You all don't know this, but there's a stairwell to get into where we are recording this right now. And my first reaction is, damn it, I got to go up those. So I can't predict it. I don't know what's going to happen at the end of the day, any day, no matter how much I sleep, no matter what medication I take, it's still unpredictable. Therefore, I'm teaching because I want to teach. I am at West Point because they're the best students I've ever taught in my life. I would go back to Oxford, but they're all woke and I had a problem there.”

“Think of what I do every single day, every hour of every day. And I schedule myself so ridiculously now because I don't want to waste a single day. I don't want to think I blew that morning. And I only have so much strength. So what has really done to me is in this room that we're recording this, I have an echo that's going on in my right ear. It's why I took the earpiece out so I have trouble hearing. So when I'm around and the ceilings are low and there are a lot of people, I'm struggling to hear them. Second is I have no balance. So yesterday when I was on the convention floor, I was knocking into people. When I did that at the Republican convention, they knew me and they're not going to turn around and say, what the hell is your problem? Less people here know me because I've only been on so-called democratic media for the last year or two. And I will bump into someone. I do not mean to do it.”

“Had a couple of issues, and I think that's had an impact. I'm in such a rush to do as much good as I can in as short a time because I'm very pessimistic about the country and about myself. And I've started to do suffer free just to understand how people think and to understand how to connect them together again. My single best presentation, the one I'm so proud of, was the one I did earlier this year to Democratic and Republican governors about how to disagree better, how to still stand up for your principles, how to still promote your policies, but not by demonizing the other side, but by disagreeing better, by finding ways to give people their dignity and their respect. And that's going to be what I do for as long as I have the chance”

“Here's the cool thing I can now do it nationwide online. I couldn't do it before. I now have the technology I need to be able to understand what the national impact is, and I may do it. I may do it just to understand. And this is something that I made a decision maybe four or five years ago. I've been sick.”

“That's exactly what I do. I use the dial technology. I think I brought it to the UK back in 1990 in Australia. They call it the worm. I call it instant response because it tells you exactly what people are thinking at the moment. And I tested speeches in the UK up until COVID. I've tested speeches in the US. I've actually started doing campaign ads.”

“I had the chance to do a couple focus groups for her with 60 minutes. I would get them started and then she would take it. And it was so cool because I knew how to provoke the fight. I didn't know how to provoke the coming together. She knew how to stop the anger and get people to respect each other, hear each other and appreciate each other. I can't do that. That is her superpower. It's something that is so rare in politics. Neither presidential candidate has it, but it's why I believe her speech will be the most impactful of them all.”

“Haveemries who will be Speaker of the House if the Democrats win a majority. And he got into it yesterday. And what I'm looking for is not applause. I'm not even looking for cheering. I'm watching, are you going to stand up and scream? And Hakeem, the first half of his speech was good, solid. The back half of his speech, they're on their feet yelling. And it is that, and this is something the single best communicator in America today is still Oprah Winfrey.”

“Because Americans have never been necessarily consistent. They can hate the sin but love the sinner. And this is something that's existed in American life now for many, many decades, that we can believe they were being mistreated and still love the country. We can believe that people tell us the truth, but we don't like the truth. In the end, you have to put yourselves in their shoes, which is what I try to do in every focus group. And I really do it. Last night, when I came back from the convention, I'm here with two friends. I took them out for dinner. I was processing everything that I saw and I did not want to go to sleep. And I was tired as hell, but I needed to continue to talk about this. When I step into a focus group, actually try to understand the motivation. And then I craft the language behind it, or then I can explain why that phenomenon exists. I would be nothing without my polling. I would be nothing without my focus groups. I'm really not a strategist, but I'm a damn good listener.”

If it's a contradiction, I'm a politician, I'm a scumbag, and you just did exactly what I've been talking about for the last, I don't know, 45 minutes. So go ahead, but I choose paradox rather than contradiction.”

I said to him, you will never get that passed because Democrats will not build Donald Trump's wall. If you call this security barrier, they can vote for it because it's about national security. It's about making America safer and more secure. It wasn't a slogan and he made fun of me for that.”

“Best example is the difference in administration success. 39% think that Joe Biden has run a good presidency. 55% think Donald Trump has. When you have that kind of success, or I should say that kind of failure, Trump should be up by so much. Why isn't he? 34 felony convictions. He should not even be in this race because what happened in New York? And the Democrats should not be in the race based on the difference between how people perceive Trump's administration versus Biden's administration.”

They were not voting for Trump. They were staying home. Now they're voting and that's going to help Democrats up and down the ticket. And that's not going to change. I'm watching what seniors do. Who's the one who's going to protect Social Security? Who's the one who's going to tax social security? That's why Trump jumped on that. Trump on a policy basis is doing quite well on a personal basis. Harris is doing quite well.”

“It's enough to take a four-point Trump lead and now make it a three-point Harris lead. It's enough to put all those swing states back into play. And in three of them, the most important ones Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, enough to take a very narrow Trump lead and make it a very narrow Harris lead. Yes, she's doing what she needs to do. This is not guarantee her the election, and she's got issues of inflation, which, by the way, don't call them blue-collar voters. Don't call them working class voters to them that's insulting. Call them paycheck to paycheck voters and watch when they say that's me. That's who I am. I am living paycheck to paycheck every week or every month. Similarly, it's on inflation. It's what you and I call it. It's affordability. Can I buy the food I want? Can I get the fuel I need, my housing, my health care, and you got the same challenges in the UK. That humanizes and personalizes the issue of inflation. She hasn't addressed that yet, and she needs to. These are fundamental highest priority issues, and she's not done it yet.”

“He got less popular votes than Hillary Clinton. She just ran a shitty campaign to be blunt. And she doesn't want to take responsibility for it, but she needs to. She got two point, what was it, more than 2 million votes, more than Donald Trump. And yet he still won because he got the votes in the right states because of the electoral college. That tells me that her campaign stunk. 2020, Joe Biden understood this, and Joe Biden actually was lucky that he could stay in the basement. He didn't have to communicate. He didn't have to engage in the same kind of politics. Now we're up to 2024. Go back to the first debate, the Biden debate, how awful Joe Biden was. I respect him. I've known Joe Biden personally for 30 years. I taught his son Bo. Bo introduced me to his dad because I liked his dad. This is a great example. I don't agree with his father on much. I love being around him. He reminded me of Bobby Kennedy at the same kind of earnestness.”

Her whole slogan at this convention, what's the one word that she's been promoting? Freedom. It's the first time I've ever seen it. This is your kind of strategy, Alistair. “I don't know. This only happened to me once before, which is 1992 when Ross Perot pulled out. And my mother asked me, I'm on the phone, I'm in Dallas, I've been working for Perot, I'm heading home, I'm actually calling her to say, mom, is okay. Can I come home for a couple weeks? I have nowhere to go. I don't know where I'm going to live. And she says, who are you going to vote for? And I'm standing there and I can put myself in the same emotion right now. I'm standing at the phone booth and I got all choked up and I said, Mom, I got to call you back. I got to get my plane. And the reason was I was starting to cry. Because I had no one to vote for. This was such a big, I was such a geek. I was such a loser as a kid. I love politics. I love democracy. And I was really pathetic. And I couldn't wait to fight with people over it. And at that moment, I realized, oh my God, who the hell am I going to vote for? I want responsibility. I want integrity. But most importantly, I'm trying to promote the truth. Not going back, and this is something that I realized in the Arab-Israeli conflict, that if you just talk about grievances, you will get nowhere. And that's one of the challenges that we face today. Israel focuses on October 7th and they have every right to do so. The Palestinians focus on the consequences of Gaza. If we continue to look backward, we will never find agreement and people will continue to die”

“Yes, the initial, and then Clinton took credit for it at the 1996 convention. He vetoed the initial legislation, made a few changes to it, welfare to work. Americans believe that you can be helped, but they want you to work for those benefits. It's actually one of the cases where the Democrats are weakest right now. They talk about assistance. They talk about programs. What the public wants is to make sure that no one goes hungry, that no one is homeless, that the people have a safety net, but they want them to work for that safety net.”

“I became a mentor and I started to mentor African Americans, people who don't have the same opportunities that I've had. And I suddenly realized that you can't ask someone to pull themselves up by their bootstraps if they don't have boots, that you can't expect people to succeed even in this great open American society if they don't have the building blocks to get there. I'm fortunate that I had two parents that love me and two parents that educated me and two parents that stayed involved in my life and not everyone has that. And so it made me suddenly understand that maybe we had to do more to help. Maybe we had to do more to teach. And it's why education is my number one issue. I just yesterday spoke at the Democrat National Convention at an outside meeting with a leader of the American Federation of Teachers. She's the top union official. I've never been pro-union. “We are damaged. We are broken. And I'm afraid that this election is going to cause even more pain over the next 75 days. And yes, I have changed. My mind has been open because of the focus groups, not the quantitative polling. I sit down, I do sessions twice a week now, every week, talking to everyone. I've probably done more focus than any living human being moderated them. And I have the scars to prove it. I used to yell in these focus groups because I'd say to me, answer, tell me the truth. You're telling me what you want Americans to hear. I want to know what you really think. I'm trying not to slam the table because that'll cause you all to have a headache. All but three signed that document. That is unheard of in modern political history, and it made a difference. Republicans won the majority for the first time in forty years. So I still think that what you all did for Blair was more significant, Alistair. But the contract with America, and I know it's been demonized. They call it the contract on America. The idea that every point had legislation, every point was articulated, the good and the bad, and that they kept to it and they got it up for a vote in every case. “It was absolutely that the case, and in 1992 I worked for Ross Perot, so Republicans thought I was a traitor. In 1993, I worked for Rudy Giuliani when he was normal, when he was arguably one of the greatest mayors of all time. And I stay with him through 2001, through September 11th.
