  1. For us, we just had a really exciting year where we launched products at Target in April of last year, and then in December, we launched on Delta Airlines. So we are actually on every Delta flight greater than 600 miles in length. And it's incredibly exciting. Millions of people are going to see our brand and actually try our products on a Delta flight this year. So it's super exciting for us and say the big sort of next, call it three years is about taking our brand offline. We've built great awareness online. We've got a great online business. We think the overall business can be so much bigger given where people buy food today.

  2. I'm going to sound like a real Netflix whore here, but I'd have to say Read Hastings. He is, I think, just a CEO that I really admire. They've done an incredible job of building a organization. And in addition to that, they've been so forward thinking on their business and how to evolve their business over time. But I think it'd just be a lot of fun to see it from the inside.

  3. Yeah, I actually do. I mean, I try to, for me, it's kind of my calm down for the day. So I try to do it right before I go to bed. It's just sort of, you know, it's calming. Like, I get to just sit and read, and it's kind of the quiet part of my day.

  4. I listen to your podcast a lot and other podcasts as well. I read a lot. And so, from a blog standpoint, all the big ones like Recode and TechCrunch. And then, frankly, I try to find blogs and newsletters in spaces that I'm kind of interested in. I'll read them for a few months, learn, and then kind of find the next set. So I think there's so much out there. I mean, I probably read 20 blogs every day and listen to a few podcasts every day.

  5. I think my biggest mentor over the time over starting NatureBox has been a guy named Barry McCarthy. Barry was the CFO of Netflix for over a decade, and he's now the CFO of Spotify. He has just taught me so much about being a CEO and sort of not afraid to knock me over the head when I make mistakes. So I think he'd be sort of the biggest mentor.

  6. I think some subscription companies will continue to rise, and I think those are ones with a proprietary product and a unique experience. I think the sampling boxes and vendors will have really challenging times. And I think those may go away.

  8. I think the truth of the matter is that many of them are now looking to build those relationships. They have all started venture capital arms. So I think that the best way would be to start developing relationships with their venture arms. And I think the investment bankers and the events and things like that are great introductions and points of mutual connect. But I think these large companies are waking up to the fact that they need relationships in the tech industry. And I think they're actively going out and looking for those.

  9. And I think these larger companies are only just now waking up to that fact. And the truth of the matter is that most of the large CBG companies don't really have an e-commerce strategy. Their e-commerce strategy is, yeah, we'll sell some stuff on Amazon. I mean, that's not really a strategy, right? And then I think the third piece of it is new capabilities. I think they look at a company like a Dollar Shave Club and look at the amount of data that a Dollar Shave Club might have. And they see that as a capability to accelerate their core business. And similarly, I think something like NatureBox, they look at the capability of selling products online or direct-to-consumer marketing or shipping products direct to consumer. And all of those things are parts of the tool set that they just don't have today.

  10. First of all, I think that CPG companies are entering this space in a big way as we all know, right? So Walmart buying jet for over $3 billion and Unilever buying dollar shape club. And I think it's sort of clear why they're doing it. And that comes down to three reasons. The first is there is a massive shift in consumer spending happening in the CPG world. The stat is that the top 20 CPG companies lost $20 billion of market share over the last three years. And so there is a huge shift happening. And that's changing the way that these companies do business. And predominantly that shift is because of the trends around health and wellness, the trends around convenience, et cetera. So I think that's number one. The second is new channels, right? And I think obviously e-commerce and online are here to stay.

  11. Two worlds grow and intertwine. I do think there's a real opportunity to combine the skill sets of a tech investor with someone that's come out of the consumer world and use sort of both of those experiences to build that next generation brand or next generation company.

  12. Yeah, I would say it's a little concerning, although, to be honest, even as a VC, I can't tell you how many spaces or companies I investigated where I really didn't have much knowledge, prior knowledge or experience, right? So I think it's kind of the pot calling the kettle black, right? And to be frank, I started NatureBox with no food experience. So I do think that in general, investors and entrepreneurs always have to be looking for that next frontier and often are operating in spaces where they are not an expert. And I think that's part of what sort of makes it all work, right? Is you can kind of look at an industry in a different way. I would say that there's really an opportunity for some of these tech investors to learn the CPG business and add even greater amounts of value than they are today. And so I do think that as these

  13. I think the reason is pretty simple. Food is one of the biggest consumer markets in the country and in the world. If you think about the amount of dollars spent at grocery stores each year, it's about $600 billion. And there's another $600 billion spent at restaurants. And so when you combine that, it's over a trillion dollar market. And it's a market that's undergoing significant change. You know, consumers are eating healthier. They want more convenient options, as you can see with something like a blue apron. They're willing to spend more on food and things, premium brands are having a lot of success today. So I think that it's in part a huge market. And I'd say the other part of it is that it's undergoing some real change and the incumbent players are just not well positioned to lead that change.

  14. I think, well, certainly it feels that way, right? That you're all raising, regardless of whether you should or not. But I think that you should always be developing relationships. However, and I probably have a bit of a different view on this, I think that you want to take a very high level, be building very high level relationship. I think that you want to as much as possible keep investors sort of outside looking in and sort of knocking initially knocking on the door and then banging the door down, right? So I think, you know, it's good to know who the investors are that might be interested in your business, but I wouldn't share too much information. Personally, I would really generate that allure of, you know, you're doing something cool and interesting and, you know, and have them really use that to kind of perk their interest a little bit.

  15. I'd say fundraising is probably one of the hardest things of being an entrepreneur because it's one of the things that you really don't control. You influence fundraising quite a bit, but you don't control sort of the other side of the table, right? And I think for many entrepreneurs, that can be kind of a difficult experience to process or difficult notion to sort of understand.

  16. For us, I think we definitely had a bit of a leg up in terms of at a minimum knowing the types of firms and people to go and approach. But I think in addition to that, I had a good understanding of the types of questions they might ask, a good understanding of what else is happening in the landscape. And I think, as you know, often there are companies in similar spaces or maybe even in the same space that could be doing great or not so great and that could impact your ability to fundraise, right? And so it's helpful to have a broader view on the landscape and what's happening not just within the four walls of your company, within other startups that are playing in similar spaces or with a similar business model. So I think from that standpoint, we were able to accelerate a lot of those conversations by knowing who to go to, what they would ask, sort of how they'd think about the business. But it's always been

  17. Having been a VC, I think it was always front and center for us, even from day one. And I think that there's good and bad of that. I do believe that unit economics are incredibly important. I also believe, though, that there are periods of time and periods of your growth curve where you can sustain either poor or negative unit economics for other reasons, right? And that could be market share, you know, simply just growth or that you may need to get to a certain level of scale before the cost structure starts to evolve and where you can make those margins. Sustainable. So I am a big believer that unit economics is massively important. Having been a VC, that was front and center, but do appreciate the fact that not every business can be run the same way. And for us, it continues to make a lot of sense to focus on union economics and make sure that they're really positive.

  18. Well, I think what we're seeing is on the B2C business, I would argue that one of the most important metrics is actually payback. So how quickly can you pay back on your customer acquisition cost? And that for me is a metric of capital efficiency in these models. On the B2B side, what we're seeing, and I should maybe step back and take a moment to explain how the B2B side of our business works, but it's very simple. You pay for snacks the same way that you would pay for employee benefits. for $15 per employee per month, you get unlimited snack. And basically your office manager no longer needs to think about snacks. You tell us how many employees you have. You know, we send you the products that we think you'll like. You obviously can customize and sort of personalize those options. And then whenever you run out, you let us know and it's there within a few days. So it's a great and sort of disruptive model from a

  19. And from an account management perspective, it's much more because these customers are larger. There's a lot more hand holding happening to make sure that these customers are well serviced and happy and retained for a long period of time.

2017-02-10 · The Twenty Minute VC · 20VC: How Startups & VCs Can Build Relationships with Potential Corporate Acquirers? 20. The biggest difference I would say is our B2C model is marketing driven. So it's customer acquisition, paid advertising, both online and offline, driving people to naturebox.com and getting them to sign up at naturebox.com. In our B2B model, it's driven by inside sales. And it looks very similar to a SaaS company where we have a lead generation team and workflow. They pass a qualified lead onto an account executive. That account executive works the customer through a closed process and then hands it off to an account manager. So I think the process is fundamentally very different because on the B2C side of the business, we can scale with ad dollars. So the more money we put into the engine, the faster we can scale and more customers we can sign up. On the B2B side, the way to scale that business is very different. It requires more top of the funnel work. It requires more people.

  21. Of those sort of vision and the mission that we have, which is to use data and technology to build healthy, better for-use Snack brand. So we see a lot of synergy in being both B2C and B2B. I will say it has its challenges, and I think some of those challenges are that the go-to-market model is very different, right?

  22. I may have learned the focus is the most important thing lesson the hard way. No, but I think in our case the B2C and our B2B business makes a lot of sense. And the reason for that is that we really think of what we're building as a brand and we want to be able to sell to consumers and consumers wherever they're buying or eating snack food. And so for us, that means that we sell online and that makes a ton of sense and that's a core capability of the company that we've built. But in addition to that, there are a lot of consumers, very many consumers in the Bay Area in particular that are eating snacks in their office either because they're purchasing those products through a micro market in their office building or their company is subsidizing those snacks. So that's a great opportunity for us to build brand awareness and we see it as sort of just an extension.

  23. Yeah, so for me, I think the biggest impact having come out of venture capital and starting a company was really around just selling, right? I think often as a VC, you're trying to get into deals, you're trying to win deals. And so you develop a good skill set around selling and salesmanship. And obviously that's a skill set that's very transferable to entrepreneurship. And in the process of starting nature box, it's been everything from raising capital where obviously I sort of know a little bit more about what the investor is looking for and how to answer the questions that they might be asking, as well as hiring folks and running a recruiting process, as well as being in front of the customer, you know, being sort of comfortable with that sales aspect of running a startup.

  24. Sort of in the thick of it alongside me and the rest of my management team, I think we sort of all feel like, hey, this is someone that gets it. They understand what it's like to build a business. And ultimately, that, in my opinion, the value of someone that had been an operator previously.

  25. I think it's about just understanding what the entrepreneur is going through, understanding and most importantly how you can be helpful. I think that at the end of the day, the entrepreneur understands that it's on their shoulders. But if you can help her be more successful, help her recruit a great engineer, management team member, whatever it might be, I think that's a very strong form of empathy that the entrepreneur interprets as, hey, this person is in the trenches with me, right? They're not just sitting at the board level sort of waiting for updates or kind of pontificating. They're actually in the trenches helping me build this company and a true thought partner. And I don't think that that type of help or support requires you to have been an operator. I have several investors that have not been operators, and I think when they're engaged and helpful.

  26. Well, they make good VCs. My perspective is I think that you do not need operating experience to be a great investor, right? So first off, I think a lot of people in Silicon Valley believe that you need to be an operator in order to invest and to be a good VC. I don't believe that's the case. I think that being an operator helps you be more empathetic to the entrepreneur, but there are many ways to gain and build that empathy. I think that for me, I'm not a big supporter or proponent of joining a venture capital firm right out of undergrad. You know, I did it. I was very fortunate to have a few people, one person in particular, Brad Hoover, who is now the CEO of Grant.

And then, you know, after we started seeing that there was real demand for this, we decided to kind of take a step back from our day jobs and really build a business around this idea.

  28. Yeah, so for me, my co-founder and I got really passionate about this idea. And in fact, we started testing the idea of nature box on nights and weekends. The first thing that we did is we put a landing page up that was naturebox.com. It showed a picture of what the box looked like. And then you could click a buy now button. And if you clicked that buy now button, you actually got sent to PayPal, where you could PayPal us money for your nature box. And believe it or not, over the course of a weekend, over 100 people actually went through this flow and PayPal us $20 for their first nature box. And these were not 100 people that we knew. These were not friends and family. These were folks that clicked on a Facebook ad and signed up for NatureBox. Now, the only problem at that point is we did not have a nature box, right? It was completely ether. It was just a

  29. For me, I had such bad eating habits that it was really, it came down to just a few changes. So I'm a big believer that you should not drink your calories. I think a lot of Americans through soda, juice, alcohol, etc., they drink a lot of calories. And so I'm a big believer that if you're trying to lose weight, drink water and a lot of water and nothing else. You know, I think that was one of the big changes that I made. And then in addition to that, it's all the things that you would imagine, right? So you cut down on anything with sugar. So desserts, candy, things like that. Eat at home and sort of prepared food, you know, much more than fast food or eating out at a restaurant. But the hard part is actually doing it.

  31. There you go. Well, no, my first job was 14 year old doing a paper route. But my first real job. So General Catalyst was really lucky and fortunate to join them while I was still in college, spent two and a half, three years working for the firm while I finished up undergrad. And then I spent about six years working for General Catalyst full-time. And then back about five years ago, I had the idea for Nature Box and decided to leave the firm and start the company with a buddy of mine from college. So my sort of background is very, very simple. Two places over the last 12, 13 years. But the story that a lot of people don't know is the reason that I started NatureBox was actually because of my own struggle with nutrition and obesity up until the age of 18, so pretty much up until I started working for GC, I had really, really bad eating habits and I was lucky.
