“Also, you need to be able to be open enough to spot the opportunities. We don't know where they're going to come yet. So, we have to be open and we have to be, if you like, we have to be willing to fail.”

“I do try and spend a lot of time speaking at schools and universities and deunsters. I think certainty is a trap. We're told to look up for certainty and know where we're going, even if it's disaster certainty. We somehow, as we tend to look for that. And I think be cautious of always looking for certainty because it dims your courage, your innovation, your imagination. And we need that. We need that from young people. And the other one I say, specifically for young women, is Stop saying sorry. When they knock on the door, the first word that comes out of most young women's mouths, or really women's mouths, is sorry. What are you sorry for? So stop, you know, train yourself and stop saying sorry and be in places where you're told you're not, you shouldn't be. That's what I'd say to all young people.”

“And exactly, and we are a service economy. We are an 80% service economy. Not that I ever, you know, I was one of the critics I've never felt that was a good balance 80-20. I think we should be 60-40, that's all for different interview perhaps. But it is our edge and we're letting it slip away. We're not at the forefront. And we should, as I say, go back to it. We need to get more of the public trusting us and using using using using using using us.”

“Then customers don't trust us, they have no confidence in us. Why would they use us? You know, a brand damage that comes from that is significant. So we have a lot of work to do to be to look forward and plan and be very strategic. And whilst you've got leaders who are thinking about rather than confronting this, but how can we, what's the quickest way out the door rather than thinking about how they plan succession and plan for those problems of the future for the 2030s, I think will be significant, then we will have an industry, I think we'll lose our edge and it'll be taken by other countries.”

“Going back to technology, if you've got large learning models, they're actually doing all the searching and screening out all the adverts. How are you going to get your new clients? So client acquisition is going to become something that is really important for the industry to look into. And the third thing I would say is a risk of environmental risk. You know, about one of 10 businesses are still taking no action whatsoever when it comes to mitigating risk in their businesses. And so environmental risk has to be something that we look at as an industry as well. Each business has to look at that. And actually, I've just thought of a fourth one, which is just thinking of recent news headlines. It's about cyber attacks. Again, it's about the threat of our data and our customers because we're not taking enough, we're not investing enough in being vigilant.”

“I really am concerned about our industry, which I think we've got a tendency, and I can see it at the moment of burying our heads in the sand, of what's coming as we go into the 2030s. All the predictions of what technology and algorithms and AI was going to do is now so much more accelerated. And the impact of an ajentic revolution of what it will do to the industry, I think we are being, we're just looking in the other direction and we're not confronting. And when you think there are three things, I think. One is, you know, what happened? What is the impact of technology? And when I say agentic revolution, I mean that the professional agents are no longer there. It's a learning models that are going to take over and be able to do that job. That will have a huge impact on our industry. Secondly, as an industry, we tend to rely on gaining new customers through advertising.”

“Is not for them, it's not their space. So it's encouraging women into that space. And when they're there, realizing that actually not only is it necessary, but looking after your financial health empowers so much of what you can and can't do, not just your dreams, but also recently I'm recovering from cancer, but when you're going through an illness, you can be out of the earning, your capacity can be damaged for two years or so. Imagine then you've got, it's a time when you have to have your costs go up because you have to have better food, more heating, probably more childcare because many women in their 50s, 60s are sandwiched carers, so they're looking after their children and their parents. And all of a sudden, all those costs go up. So it's about encouraging women to really become financially secure for whatever the future might hold. And it's doing that through access, simplicity, and building confidence and trust.”

“So, a lot of the research, because I wanted to give something back, and as I said, economic abuses is in about 85% of coercive relationships. I mean, just in the last 12 months in the UK, about one in seven women are still suffering from economic abuse from either their current or former partner in one form or another. And I'm afraid technology is making it easier because if you think about your phone and those apps, if it's an abusive controlling person, they can tell where you are, what you're buying, they can stop it, they can trace you, you know, technology is actually enabling a lot of control in a very negative way in relationships. So I started thinking about this and looking at the statistics. And rather than things getting better, they were getting worse. And I don't believe actually women need different products in investments, particularly, I don't think, which is what is my world. It's about building confidence and access and literacy because all the research we show is that women think that investment”

“Absolutely. You know, there's a famous speech that Roosevelt gave in Paris at the Sarbonne when he talked about being in the arena. It's easy to sit in the stands and throw comments and dissuade people. But sometimes you've got to roll your sleeves up and get into the arena. And I think that's an extraordinary speech that I revisit quite often.”

“I mean, I look forward. I don't tend to look back. I've done something. My measuring of success is not the outcome necessarily. It's about the fact that I've done it, I've done my best, and I then move on to the next thing.”

“My family, but also what I call my cornerstone girlfriend relationships. I don't have to see it all the time, but they're there when I need them, and that's so important. You can't do anything on your own, actually, whatever you're battling or doing. You need those allies around you to be strong, but you have to be careful and spot the false allies too, because there are people who drain your energy. When you're fighting for whatever it is. But I think it comes back to the scars of surviving a domestically abusive relationship of having fought in the city and being abused. I was actually nicknamed the Black Widow Spider in the city for the campaign I was doing. I think I did an interview in one of the magazines FT in Bloomag, where they were saying, you know, Gina, you call the wrecking ball. All these names that were being thrown. a level of armor, if you like, of resilience.”

“Death threats, as I said, there were days I went home, held my kids because there were lots of death threats against them as well, where I just thought, do I just give up and not carry on? And then I would wake up the next day and my family, especially my husband, would say, you know, you're going to regret. And I went back to one simple thought, which was If the heaters then become the mainstream voices, we all lose. So I have to speak up. I can't let their voices trump mine. And that simple thought and what it would mean for my children's future really drove my stewardship of what I was doing.”

“So, in a way, COVID, when COVID happened, it was a relief for us because we weren't going out. I wasn't going out. The death threats were awful. The hate was, it would seem to be the floodgates had opened and the things I was being told, I suppose if I could sum them up in a nutshell would be what I found very disturbing of what it said about us as a society. I thought we had gone past it. So as I said, the idea that as a woman of colour, it wasn't my place to be standing up and doing this. I should be grateful for being here and stay quiet. The second one was I couldn't be smart enough, so there must be people behind me telling me what to do. And the third one was it couldn't be my money. Who was it that was funding me? Taken into totality, those are very negative views of a woman in being successful in society. So I found it very disturbing to find that.”

“It's really interesting because I never envisaged that I would suddenly be front and center in the way I was and the way I was used, if you like, as an avatar for different sides of the argument and the media. And so I was, if you like, I remember being told in a green room, you know, you couldn't really make up someone that would be better to be hated, woman of colour. You speak too well, you've got too much money, there'll be lots of conspiracy theories of who's behind you. So you are our perfect avatar. I was told that after the referendum, which is quite an extraordinary thing to be told by somebody senior in the media. But it was hard. There were days I went home and cried. I mean, we were looked after as a family by the terrorist squad for two years.”

“Sleep sometimes, and I realized, and that's when I really woke up to the fact that having an unwritten constitution, we do actually have a constitution. It's just lots of bits and it's made out of precedent. Precedent and the way the royal prerogative was being used is the way it erodes our democracy. And for example, under the Blair Years, that was used something like 90-odd times he actually bypassed Parliament. And that's so dangerous because we have a representative democracy. We pay and elect people to represent us. So if a Prime Minister decides to bypass them, then we don't have a democracy. And my view is very much that nobody is above the law. And so I had the ability and the understanding to say, well, both in both cases, that Parliament had to be involved.”

“Very interesting because everyone thought I popped up from nowhere and sort of the doors and the steps of the Supreme Court. But I say I took me 30 years to pop up from nowhere because I've been an activist both in the financial services industry but also around domestic violence because I'm a survivor. So around economic abuse and domestic violence and so I've been working on that and outing those because there are lots of myths still around that somehow weak, silly women are the ones who get abused. It's not the statistics are horrific. And so I wanted to talk about that as well. So I've done a lot of campaigning but I've also been very fascinated with the way our democracy works. And actually my first demonstration was going out when under the Blair government against the Iraq war because at the time I became really intrigued in how Henry VIII powers. I'm a bit of a geek so you know I read Hansard to”

“Building confidence, doing financial education and literacy, and being much more involved, you know, being tinkering and saying, for example, we know that the government have said they're going to introduce mortgages into children's school curriculum. I've never met a 12-year-old who can buy a mortgage or get a mortgage. So is that the right time? Is it tinkering? Is it realistic? No. To my view as an industry, we need to come together and think about programs at university level further education and not just financial aspects, including entrepreneurship and business skills. So we could do so much more in what we do in giving back to society as an industry.”

“Either gated or lost. It's just, it isn't fair, and it damages our industry. So we have to be better at when we spot something wrong, all of us, of calling that out. The regulator needs to be much more robust and not have a rear view mirror of how it's regulating the industry. And it's not about more regulation. It's about better implementation of the regulator. Because that FCA handbook, for example, I think could be half the size and be much more effective. So it's about them being much more proactive as a regulator. And then the other thing I think we need to do as an industry is put ourselves in the public's shoes in that lack of confidence. And I've launched a brand in November last year called Money She, which is aimed at women. Because as I go back to say that we have one of the lowest saving and investment populations of the G7, we have to do more as an industry when it comes to information.”

“It's interesting the naming and shaming because I think you need to enact change and do the naming and shaming. You know, the bad actors need to be outed because we all get tired by the brush of those bad actors. And what has distressed me at times is that through our True and Fair campaign and other work I've done, we've been trying to tell the regulator about things that they've acted too late. You know, we wrote to a report called The Sleep of the Wheel actually was, which detailed all the scandals. And, you know, if you look at, for example, Woodford, the Woodford scandal, we sent the reporting accounts to the FCA about two years before and said, look, there are questions on liquidity here. These products, this product should not be sold to retail investors. LCF has another scandal. So as an industry, we've not acted in soon enough to stop bad things happening. And it means that retail investors, ordinary people whose hard earned money has then been...”

“There's a lot of wonderful PR and rhetoric. And behind it, some change, but in my view not enough. You know, you look at the sector. I mean, things have gotten better, but the whole debacle around greenwashing, the whole ESG, I mean, that was disgraceful, you know, because a lot of the people that was attracting were new investors who were not so, it were naive newer investors. And they were falling for all of this because they wanted to do good with their money, but they weren't being told the whole truth. And so I think, you know, you've got to think about the responsibility. And it comes back to that trust thing again. You know, we've got to be much more honest. And I think the rhetoric only lasts for so long. People do see through it. So I think we need much more change. There's still opacity in fees. We're still not doing enough when it comes with tackling scandals when we see them in the industry.”

“So the industry was, oh, but somehow I remember being told I would bring down the industry, which I thought was quite remarkable for one woman to be able to do, but somehow, you know, it was, oh, we couldn't be that transparent. I never found a intellectually robust argument against it, but there were lots of arguments against it. The industry did not want to change. It was filling its pockets to the degree that it didn't see that it needed to change. And the other thing it didn't want to do was on the simplicity of language, because somehow there was this belief that being complex and complicated in using jargon would prove that they could then charge these fees. And I've never bought into that. I think simplicity builds trust.”

“Because that to me is very important about building what we do as an industry because I think as an industry, wealth managers, financial services, we undersell what we do. We actually have a huge social impact. You know, if we can encourage people to save and invest more, which at the moment we're about the lowest in the G7, which is disastrous, then that's better for individuals, but it's better for society and it's better for us as an industry. Meant being transparent, which then goes with truth, and then builds trust. So the three T's go together. And that's what SCM was about. So smart, common sense, modern investing, the SCM bit, and proving that it was possible. You could still make a profit by operating a different sort of modern model.”

“Of fees, but also holdings, because in the old world, if I would say traditional investment management, wealth management, only about the top 10 holdings were visible. And I felt it was very important that people knew exactly what they're holding. So 100% transparency on fees and holdings and then also outing and stopping a lot of the dubious behaviors like closet index tracking, stock lending. A lot of the things that were open secrets in the industry, but nobody was prepared to do anything about it because basically they were doing very well, thank you. And it was the customer that was losing. So I wanted to use technology to build a platform. We also had the wonderful advent of a growing landscape of exchange-traded funds, so low-cost products that would give us much greater liquidity and spread. And so all the tools were there. And it was by knitting it together in an offering to the consumer. And changing that balance.”
undated · Off The Agenda · Gina Miller: Transparency, Consumer Rights & Standing Up for Principle | Off The Agenda | OTA Media · IDENTIFIED FROM THE TRANSCRIPT · source
“Yes, it was an interesting time because post the financial crisis I was very concerned about a lot of the things that had happened and gating in funds and people being missold products that they thought were then weren't, liquidity issues. And so what I wanted to look at is how could we build a modern investment management company that was built on 100% transparency, especially around fees, because fees has been one of the things I've really fought against, the opacity of fees, because at the time it was very much that only about a third of fees were being transparently told to clients. And to my mind, can you imagine going into a shop? thinking you're paying £100 for something on your credit card and then a month later you get the statement and it says it was £300. That to me was dishonest. And yes, it might have been on page 143, but to me that was still opaque. So trying to fight for 100% transparency.”

“I think it's, I don't want to sit in those quiet moments and think if only I had spoken out about that. I've seen something, be it a microaggression or a micro unfairness. I tend to say something because sometimes you don't have the outcome you desire. But at least if you can stop and get someone to think about their actions, about their words, about their impact, then I think that's responsible.”

“And it comes, there's also a question of nature and nurture of what do you like. And I think I've never found silence, something that's very attractive.”

“Started from when I was this high. I was very fortunate to have parents who instilled in myself and my siblings a sense of purpose, duty, responsibility and fairness. So growing up with those values, you can't help but take it into the workplace. And I've always been somebody who thought that I don't want to be somebody different when I walk in the door to work to the one who walks out and then lives my other life, my personal life. So I've lived my life both professionally and personally with the same value system and I've not really worried about what people think about me and being accepted. I'm much more interested in being accountable and one of the things going back to my parents that we grew up with is the idea of not living in regret. So that idea of living back and thinking of only I had done that, if only I'd spoken up at that time. So living by those principles means that I've probably always been like that.”
