  1. Follow the circus, yes, but I do think Iwans will be relieved at first that their televisions are not insane in their mailboxes aren't filled up with mailers and then they'll miss it a little bit.

  2. I think you did. I don't know if I mentioned that. Yeah. So it just because it's a white population doesn't mean that they don't reflect, you know, what the rest of the nation is thinking and that they're not good at vetting these candidates.

  3. It's a good argument. And as a reporter, I hate to just defend Iowa. I can tell you what other people say the arguments are without weighing in one way or another. And people say that it's inexpensive. Iowa is a small enough state that it's easy to travel. Any candidate who doesn't have very much money can go in and actually get people to come listen to him or her that you don't have to be a millionaire to campaign in Iowa television advertising is fairly inexpensive as in comparison to other states. And also it just hasn't played out. Yes, we have a mostly white population, but it hasn't been borne out that we only vote for white candidates. In fact, we voted for

  4. But Trump has done that and Trump is leading. You know, Trump is trying to be everything to everybody. He's that bulldog conservative, mad dog, conservative, and he's also seen as the moderate populace.

  5. Much across the board, but people have said we looked at him, we vetted him, and we just don't quite think he's ready yet. He has it because he looks so young?

  6. They are, yes, oh definitely, and they have just, I mean, it's been all Marco all the time on television, and he's really gone all in for Iowa. He originally said he was going to win, and he was very determined. And actually, on paper, he looks like the exact candidate who could win because he does have such high favorables with both very conservative and the moderates, with the Tea Party and the Evangelicals as well as the business Republicans. And so if he doesn't do second or third, if Ben Carson goes in front of him, people are going to be questioning, you know, you had the door thrown wide open for you. How come you couldn't do better? You've been, you know, trying to battle Trump for months in Iowa. How come you couldn't take him down? It'll be interesting to see what the media narrative is after that. I know Republicans that I've talked to from our poll have said, we gave them a good hard look. We like him. You know, he's got like a 74% favorability.

  7. Oh, definitely, most definitely, especially because Marco Rubio is very, very well liked in Iowa across the board he has high favorabilities with every category of Republican, so he has everything working in his advantage. His campaign has spent nearly as much as the Jeb Bush forces in Iowa. And they're the two.

  8. He could. He very easily could. Especially, I do know he has a really good organization. He's got a super pack that has just been grinding it out for months. They're very well organized and have been distributing little booklets about him. And really, you know, fanning out across the state to have that one-on-one contact. And his campaign also has just been going just great guns lately. So, you know, organization can make a difference. I tend to think that passion makes more of a difference. People are going to show up for their coxes if they really are excited about a candidate, but organization also can help. So he could.

  9. Recovered, and Iowans listened and said, Okay, I guess we must have been stupid because they quickly replaced him. But, you know, he still does have, he's in double digits in our last poll in early January. He still has a base of support there that's pretty strong.

2016-01-28 · The Axe Files with David Axelrod · Ep. 26 - Jennifer Jacobs · IDENTIFIED FROM THE TRANSCRIPT · source

  10. Then Donald Trump said how stupid our Iowans, and that was because Ben Carson had taken the lead in Iowa. And so he was, you know, in Western Iowa saying, how stupid are you people for not, you know, having me be a frontrunner?

  11. He did. He led for between two separate polls, so he had maybe a month or so there where he was at the top of the polls, very strong front runner. He seemed to collapse when he had problems expressing his thoughts on foreign policy. That seemed to be it. And then just the soft spoken thing. Everyone says he seems lovely. He seems like a doctor. I would want to have, you know, for healthcare, I would want him at my bedside. And he's a very faithful person. They like him and they trust him, but

  12. Um, they keep saying that, you know, they're going to close like a freight train at the end. They still think that, you know, they're known quantities and people trust them and like them and that they somehow will get a surge right at the end. I haven't seen any signs of that happening. They're just looking for something new and more disruptive this time. They're just looking for something more fierce. It just seems like they do still have a lot of respect for those two. But, you know, they're way down in the single digits and probably if they don't jump in, you know, make a pretty big jump, at least get into, you know, double digits or high single digits, then they'll probably be rethinking their campaigns.

  13. If there's a representative, a surrogate for that particular candidate in the precinct who gives a great moving speech, you know, someone could change their mind and write down a different name on that piece of paper, but I think there's going to be some candidates that either drop out literally on caucus night when the results come in or in the few days after.

  17. The man himself. Right. You know, I think people don't necessarily know some of the things about Marco Rubio's history. There's a new advertisement that's coming out now about how he has some issues with his personal credit cards and the Republican Party credit cards down in Florida. And that is just coming out now. Republicans in Iowa are not big fans of credit card debt. And he apparently somehow got him, his credit cards confused and somehow charged twenty-two thousand dollars on his essentially on his work credit card instead of his personal credit card. There's an attack ad from the Bushpack that is just starting to come out. He's getting a lot of attacks. There's the gang of aid attack right now.

  18. I know he is. He is. He's very approachable. He seems kind and friendly. I mean, I just, I know this from talking to people after the events. What did you think about this man? And they absolutely like him and think he's personable and reproachable.

  19. He's a very, very good campaigner. He's funny. He tells a joke or several jokes at the beginning of each of his events, and he really gets people rolling in. And the press laugh as well. It's very funny. He is very warm. He remembers people. He remembers names. That's not a word.

  21. Bordering on Wiley. He knows exactly what he's doing, and he knows how close he can get to, you know, expressing his views without actually breaking his word, which is, you know, he gave his word that he was going to stay neutral in this race and he does not want to go back on that.

  22. Yes, oh my goodness, I kept rereading Twitter and calling people that were at the event and saying, is this really real? Chuck Crassley actually on stage at a Donald Trump event. And it just, it really caught everyone off guard. And I do think Chuck Grassley is also a very clever, I wouldn't say Wiley, but he's a very clever politician. He knows exactly. Clever boy.

  23. The governor's son. Yes. And so there were people who were in a clamor about that and said, you know, no special interest group is worth hurting the integrity of the Caucasus, and that is that the caucuses are not influenced by elected officials. The people decide. There's no kingmaker in Iowa that comes forth and tells the people who they can and cannot vote for. So there was a lot of objections to that. Even people who are very big Terry Branstad supporters said inappropriate. But he truly believed it. I mean, he can speak political rhetoric like any politician, but in this particular case, I think this was coming from the heart. He does think that Ted Cruz's stances would hurt Iowa, would hurt the economy, would hurt the Republican Party. He really believes it.

  24. Monday night? I'm not sure. He's at pulling at 4% in our last poll right now. He could go up a little bit based on organization. I do know that they have a very, very, very good talented staff who are going to be going out and making sure their people do show up. So that could make a difference, that can make a difference of, you know, a couple points to, you know, six or seven or eight points. So that could make a difference. But what our polling shows is people want a disruptor. They want an agitator. They want someone who's going to come in and really shake things up and they just didn't believe that Jeb Bush was going to do that as much as they wanted. And they do think that Cruz and Trump would be those.

  25. That's such a good question. What I hear most from people is that he has the wrong last name. That's the best answer I can give. I'm just not quite sure why. I mean, he has the profile to do well in Iowa. He is a conservative. He has ideas that people like. There are some things in his past that certain conservatives in Iowa have distaste for. But he's a strong governor. I think it's an anti-establishment year. People are not interested in dynasties right now on the GOP side. Perhaps he didn't inflame their passions as much. Perhaps they just didn't see that he could come in and be the hammer that Donald Trump or Ted Cruz. So you're going to get any kind of...

  26. A white hot celebrity. He's just a white hot celebrity. Everyone just is just fascinated by him. And I asked people one time, I said, what is it that is so fascinating? And someone said he's just so interesting to look at. He's got those rubbery lips. He's got that hair that kind of feathers down over his forehead. And he's got that, you know, kind of strange colored skin. And when he talks, he's very animated. And there's just something about him that is like a Star Wars.

  28. It's possible we will know what our polling shows in the next couple of days. Now, Donald Trump in our polling has not been in the lead in Iowa since August. So it's been a very long time since he's been the frontrunner. He's always been number two. He's been towards the top. But as far as we know from our polling, Ted Cruz is still in the lead, so I'm going off of our early January poll. We shall see if he has been knocked out of the lead in our poll. I trust our polling. So I believe it will tell us what we're going to see on caucus night. But yes, people listen to Donald Trump. He gets so much media attention that whatever he says sinks in. You know, you've got other messages, even TV ads that are attacking other candidates, and it doesn't sink into the psyche the way Donald Trump does because it's such a repetitive thing. He's repeated just on loops on cable TV and he's just everywhere online and everywhere on Twitter. His message has really come through.

  29. Hold to his commitments when he makes a promise, is he going to stick with it? Does he mean what he says? Or is he just if he gets flustered or frustrated with something, is he just going to turn around and go a different direction? And so for the first time, people were saying, you know, either I was, I am a Trump supporter and now I'm having my doubts or I could see myself actually caucusing. I was just getting to the point where I could see myself caucusing for him. But this is childish. This is just too much.

  30. He's very calculating, and who knows exactly what he was thinking, I think it was a power thing probably for him. He felt like he wanted to get his way. He wanted Meg and Kelly kicked off of the panel, and he didn't get his way, and he also has talked a lot about how it frustrates him that, you know, these networks make so much money off of him. And so he feels like since he's the big draw at these debates, he's the one who draws millions of viewers that he should have a little bit more say than other people. And he just wanted, you know, the, you know, the folks at Fox News to pay attention to him when he said, I just don't want this particular journalist there. And then when they sent this a little bit snarky message out statement out to the world, he just didn't care for that. And maybe people see that as powerful. Other people were emailing and tweeting that it seemed erratic to them. It's just, you know, it's just one more thing that's unexpected. They just don't know where he's going to come from next.

  31. It could be, or you know, people were, you know, there's a lot of argument that he's weak, that he's too afraid to be, you know, interrogated by this Fox News journalist. So people were a little surprised at that. And actually, you know, his chief rival, Ted Cruz has really made hay of that and has been calling him ducking Donald and has this caricature of him that's been circulating in Iowa. So a lot of people trying to make this seem like it was a bad decision for him. And actually I did hear from him.

  32. Ah, I do. I've heard so many mixed things today I pay attention to a lot of what our activists are saying on social media, and some people were saying go, Donald, you stand up to that establishment and, you know, just kind of fist waving in the hair and air and thinking that that is, you know, a great thing for him to stand up like that. Others saying, wait a second, I thought he was this great negotiator. How come, you know, if he gave it an ultimatum, how come he didn't get his way? How come he didn't?

  33. Actually, one person told me that her neighbor said, I'll wash your car every week for a month if you come over and be with my candidate. So there's like some literal horse trading. I don't think any exchange of money, but just neighbors, you know, doing anything they can to try to woo someone over to their corner. And that can be really effective. You think you know who you're going to caucus for when you walk in and your neighbors influence you to do something entirely different?

  34. Right. Yeah, we're just the starting line for this long process, but I do think it's going to be very, very close. I think it's going to be within a couple points, and it's going to come down to peer pressure on the night of those caucuses. People are going to go in thinking they know who they want to vote for. But when their friends and neighbors start saying, you know, giving their appeals and their pitches and doing their cheerleader thing and trying to, you know, say, this is why you should be with our person, you know, sometimes if a precinct.

And what they tell me is they think that she is warm and funny and friendly and very accessible and she actually listens and she's very kind and she's thoughtful and she remembers Barack Obama, President Obama in an interview he gave to Politico recently called her wicked smart and Iowans have been saying that exact same thing to me for months now talking about how they can't believe how smart she is. She's just very, very intelligent on every topic and you just can't stump her. And they also just for some reason connect with her. They see that she's had so many things happen to her in her life. One woman used the phrase, you know, she's been beat up so many times and they see how she just is impervious to that and she can just stand up to anything. And I hear that a lot from Democratic voters is they just like her resilience. I also do hear the woman factor from men and women, from Democrats in Iowa, who are.

And she said, Hillary Clinton wanted to know all these questions about her and was listening and was so kind and had so many kind things to say. And then all of a sudden, you know, Janella's interested and she's starting to volunteer for the Clinton campaign. She goes to the debate, the Democratic debate that was held in Iowa, and one of Clinton's staffers sees her in the audience and says, I know Hillary's going to want to talk to you. Oh my gosh, come this way. She's going to be, she's going to want to see you. And so she goes, and sure enough, remembers her name is Janelle, starts talking to her. Janelle goes to another rally and ends up hugging Hillary Clinton, you know, as if they're old friends, and they truly feel like they have a bond.

  42. Yeah, she emailed me just a couple days ago. Her name was Janelle Turner, and she said she wanted to tell me the story about this encounter she'd had with Hillary Clinton. She had gone not necessarily to see Hillary Clinton even, to a rally in which Katie Perry, the famous musician singer, was playing a concert, did three songs in a parking lot in Des Moines, and she had gone to see Katie Perry, and she was holding up a sign that said I've just completed thirteen rounds of chemotherapy, only three more to go, hear me roar. And Bill Clinton saw that sign from the stage and came down and talked to her, and moved her to tears because he was taking pictures with her and her two kids and just making her feel very special that he singled her out. In fact, she called herself a political nobody, and she just couldn't believe that he was giving her attention. She thought it was over, then, you know, a short time later, a police officer.

Oh, you know I'm just thinking through every single candidate and they all have their different quirks and some of them are so friendly and so accessible and others you never see them smile at all. You know, there was one who had really bad breath and I won't name names. You know, it's just you do get to know them really up close and personal and they remember your name. Some of them do. You know, the things that will probably stick out for me most are the stories that I get, the feedback I get from Iowans about the personal touches and how much that means to them and how they consider these candidates to be rock stars and how they really truly believe that they could change their lives. And those are the stories that will probably stick with me more than just the interactions with the candidates themselves is the influence they have on people.

  44. But it is true. The people who are participants in the Iwacoxes take it very seriously, and I'm amazed when I talk to them how they know every turn of the screw in the race. It really is striking to me. They read our new stories, they watch television, they research, they go online, they're following social media, they are totally up to speed, however. There are 1.93 million registered active voters in the state of Iowa, and with both sides GOP and Democratic for the two caucuses, we might get, you know, oh two hundred eighty thousand. So that's such a small percentage of active voters who actually participate.

Even on the GOP side, it can take an hour. It's not all that quick. You know, not like going in and just casting a ballot, which can take 10 minutes. It does take a little bit longer, but I do think the Republicans' way of doing caucusing is probably less intimidating and more appealing to people
