  1. We have occasionally discussed the fate of our club at the moment it's doing all right doing very well in fact at the moment I thought you were going to say going to compliment us on that

  2. and on the brilliance and imagination that's there in all people, which is why I'm fascinated by, I'm not great at it, but understanding poetry and art. the sense of imagination that's there in all people and we waste so much by not giving our kids real opportunities

  3. Do I make mistakes? Have I made mistakes? Yeah, I mean, come on, you know, show me the person that has never made a mistake, and I'll show you somebody that's never done anything. But you're not.

  4. Enough is enough rallies. Look at all the activities that are going on in the communities. Look at the activities, the rail union, the communication workers union, teachers units and so on. All those ideas that we brought together, they weren't all new but brought together in our two manifestos are still there and out there. And there's a whole lot of a politicized younger generation who do not want to grow up in debt and poverty. They want to make their contribution to society. I'm angered by so much by the waste of poverty in our society.

  6. Because he thought real politics that morning I remember it. I was at my house. He phoned me up and he said, Jeremy, are you there? I said, yeah, yeah, I'm fine. What was it you wanted, Tony? And he said, I've just prepared this statement. What he said, can I read it to you? So I said, sure, sure. So he read this whole, it was slightly longer than the words you put in there. It was about stepping down and so on. So he read it to me. And he then said, What do you think? Because you've gone very quiet. I was sort of trying to take in what he was saying. And I said, well, two things, Tony. One is I don't agree with it. I think you're wrong. Secondly, it's bloody brilliant.

  8. The Labour Party has to represent the desire and demands of people to bring about social change. That is why our party was founded.

  9. The party, and I'm trying to be as generous as possible here, I want Labour to an election. I want to get rid of the Tory government. We're not going to do it by offering to manage the economy. We're going to be only successful in doing it if we offer to change the economy and change the levels of inequality and injustice in our society. That requires public ownership, that requires intervention, that requires a whole process in which you don't leave a large proportion of the population behind trying to survive on food banks and just getting by. You've got to offer something much more. And I think the manifesto as we put forward in 2017 and 2019 met a lot of the need.

  13. I was, yes, I was suspended for membership. An investigation took place, an inquiry took place, a hearing took place, and I was unanimously reinstated. As a party member, and then that action took place the day afterwards. Look, the issues we face in this country, poverty, unemployment, a government that's out of control in benefiting bankers' bonuses, we should be concentrating on that not the internal work into the Labour Party.

  15. My constituents voted for me as a Labour candidate, more than 50% of the electorate voted for me as a Labour candidate. And so they find it more than a bit odd that I'm now labelled in the media as an independent. I was elected for Labour and that's been my life. To be fair, Major.

  16. I was elected as a Labour MP. It's a very odd position to be in. Been a Labour Party member for More than 50 years. I joined the Labour Party even before England won the World Cup. So the men's team, that is. Yes, yes, the men's team. And I've held many positions in the party from branch secretary, constituency, chair, agent, all kinds of things, as well as obviously being a Labour MP and leader of the party.

  17. That clear at the time, and the Ford inquiry points out the way that I had also set up a process for dealing with this, and I also was very keen that when I became leader, I was astonished that I would get a call from the Labour Party head office saying, we're going to take disciplinary action against so-and-so. Do you agree with it? What? Like, what's it got to do with me? If somebody is misbehaving in the party, I'm not talking here necessarily anti-Semitism or anything, just What's it got to do with the leadership? Surely there has to be a process within the party. So what I wanted to do was, if you will, have a separation of powers between the leadership of the party and the process within the party. The Ford inquiry is pointed out the way in which some people, how shall I put it, didn't act in the way that they should have done as staff and officials within the party.

  19. Go back to the first part of the statement which I made was that I welcomed and accepted the report, would work with anybody to implement that report and the rule changes that were required from it. And I also pointed out in defence of the 99.9% of Labour Party members that anti-Semitism is and was and will always be wrong and that the numbers of cases were not as great as much the media had said.

  20. Prominent Jews. There are people in Jewish voice for labor. I can't look inside everybody's head and decide what they think or why they think it. That I am totally clear that I will not tolerate anti Semitism in any form, any way and never have and never will.

  21. There may well be in some people's minds, but I think you have to look at it from the situation of human rights and Palestinians and also the very large number of very active Jewish members of the party that were very supportive of me, very supportive of my leadership, and particularly supportive of the policy of recognition of Palestine. And I have to say I've worked with many human rights groups from Israel, done meetings with them. In respect of the treatment of minorities and particularly Palestinian people.

  22. I made it very clear also that the occupation of Palestine is wrong and that the path to peace in the region has to be by the recognition of the state of Palestine indeed included that in the manifesto. What I would also say is that a very explanation. Was there a link?

  23. Were some horrible things said against and about me at that time. There is no way I would ever want a society that isn't totally supportive of everyone, whatever their identity. And that means that we cannot tolerate that degree of racism or any degree of racism within our society. And anti-Semitism is an egregious form of disgusting racism in every way.

  25. I absolutely condemn antisemitism in every single form as you've just acknowledged and I took action against any anti-Semitic activity within the party, introduced procedures to deal with it that hadn't existed before and made very clear my position on this. So why continue?

  26. Well, look at it this way Labour as a party member's 60%, 70% remain voters, maybe more. of Labour voters it was about 60-40 and as I endlessly pointed out if you're pouring up against it in a remain constituency in London and you're pouring up against it in a leave constituency like Mansfield you're pouring up against it and what I was trying to say was that we would negotiate a leave option with the EU that would include a customs union and would include a dynamic relationship on workers rights and environmental protections interestingly negotiations with Theresa May broke down over environmental protection not workers' rights and so I had to try and bring those sides together and I felt that we could get this agreement and then I said okay if this brings people together we'll we'll have it to a public vote to decide

  27. I think that, I mean, you can never put one issue down as wide an election result was what it was. There's lots of factors about how and why people vote or why they vote or don't vote. I think one of the issues obviously the issue of Brexit, Boris Johnson came up with his very simplistic thing saying we'll get Brexit done. I was pointing out that our health service would be on sale to Americans. produced some genuine documents which showed that secret negotiations were going on with American healthcare companies by the British government. Sadly, very few of our media were prepared to report this and said I got them from Russia.

  28. The policies that we put forward. Example National Education Service, particularly Green Industrial Revolution and public ownership of rail mail water and energy were actually all individually popular and still are. And during the COVID pandemic, the whole issue, I was condemned, for example, for suggesting we could have universal broadband. The Prime Minister himself was saying we need universal broadband. Only three months later.

  33. No, no. And so then it went quiet. I looked up and said, what's going on? They said, it's got to be you. You're the one that's been pushing this. So I said. Okay, at that point I saw Diane Habbitt's hand move faster than lightning. Press the send button on her phone.

  34. So that you can run. Yes, that's correct. And so we'll have to just fight on policy. And I said, you're missing an opportunity. You've got to try and do something here. I then went away to the USA on a delegation to meet senators and congress people to talk about Guantanamo Bay, all party delegation. I went with David Davis andrew Mitchell. I came back a week later and they were still having the same discussion. And I said, well, look, you're going to have to make up your mind. So we had this meeting of the campaign group in W1. So we're sitting there. And that's one of the small committee rooms off Westminster Hall. And so I'm writing in my notebook, as I often do. I carry a small notebook around some writing like this. And Diane said, no, I did it. I'm not doing it again. John said, no, I've been on that track. I'm not doing it again. And then others said, no.

  35. Well, after the twenty fifteen election, there was obviously a lot of people very depressed at the result, a lot of talk about whether we should run a leadership candidate or not. My view was that we should. The colleagues in the Socialist Campaign group said we're unlikely to get the nominations. A lot of other left groups said it's a good idea, but we won't get the nominations. That's enough left.

  36. I would rather, first of all, deal with the injustice of the way the House of Lords is. So I would go for an elected chamber elected on the basis of English region, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, as being a democratically accountable body that would be a counterweight to the House of Commons. You can draw up a suitable arrangement so it doesn't become a constant political logjam, so you don't have equality of power totally between the lower house and the upper house, as has been achieved in Germany, for example, where they don't have equality of it, but they do have the Bundesrat, the higher chamber, which represents the Land of Parliaments.

  37. I think we're going to move to a situation where people are going to start to question it. And it's interesting that his first statement has been that it wants to look at the management of it and the cost of it, which was interesting, that he's moved into it in that way, and also to make the number of term working royals smaller. I think we're moving into a much more democratic society. And I think this does mean we've got to start questioning a lot of the constitutional things, such as the power of the royal prerogative and the undemocratic nature of our parliamentary system. I'm talking about the House of Lords of Lords here.

  38. Well, yeah, I mean, you've got to separate the person from the institution as well. And we had some very interesting chats about gardens, gardening, jam making, fruit growing. She asked me how my allotment was getting on, what I was growing on it, and that sort of thing. It was a fine, nice conversation. Likewise, I had a couple of quite long conversations with Charles about environment, sustainability and the future of our planet. And he is extremely well informed on all that, extremely well informed.

  39. You've never done it before. There's never been any demand to do it. We don't as a country routinely go around singing the national anthem at every single event we go to. We don't sing it in schools. We don't have the raising of the flag in schools as they do in the USA and other places. We are not that sort of what I would call excessively nationalist. And I don't see the point or the need for it.

  40. Very odd, very, very odd. It's never ever happened at a Labour conference since the conferences were first held at the time of the First World War. I find it peculiar and not really necessary. I mean, the conference is there, hopefully, for a democratic expression and party members' views to discuss policies and so on. I just find it rather odd.

  41. No, not My point is I was brought up in, I live in this country, I British nationality like you do and so on, but you've got to be honest about the situation facing your own country. Wave in a flag isn't going to end the poverty of so many children in our society. It is about how you live your life. visit other countries happen many times and it's quite interesting when you talk to people from say Scandinavian countries who say very proud of the relative social equality they have compared to us. That's something surely we could all be much prouder of.

  42. Patriot, I want to be patriotic about a country that doesn't tolerate poverty, homelessness and unemployment. And I said that in the election campaign. Patriotism is dressed up by some of our popular media as the size of the flag you've got, the ability you have to wave it and shout, I am British, I am British, I am British. I think patriotism is about being proud of the society in which you live. And how can we be proud of a country with so much poverty?

  43. To say Russia had done it I thought the way the media and many people in Parliament handled that in respect of what I'd said was, well, beyond unfair. First of all, I condemned the poisoning, obviously. It's totally wrong. Secondly, I said, you've got to find out who did it. If we believe in law, international law and the Chemical Weapons Convention, then it must be followed. And what I said was this issue should be referred to the chemical weapons organization and will then decide the guilt. The guilt eventually was, well, quite quickly, was decided on Russia. I can then russia for it. I just said follow the logic. Who are MPs in Parliament to jump up and down and say, we know who did it?

And the idea that some people have said I'm some kind of apologist for Putin, I just draw the parallel when Tony Blair was entertaining Vladimir Putin to a night at the opera. 48. I couldn't understand was why under Khrushchev the Crimea was separated from Russia and told it was part of the Ukraine. At the time people didn't notice because Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union, albeit it had its identity as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. But the Ukraine had always been part of Russia and it was also Russia's naval base and all the rest of it. And so I always thought it was very odd that in the breakup of the Soviet Union the relationship with Ukraine accepted the presence of the US huge naval base there but didn't do anything about the question of the Ukrainian control, if you like, of Crimea.

  49. Paused, but then started getting plans for expansion. Now, I think we, all of us, missed a huge opportunity for developing some kind of peaceful cooperation and existence within Europe. Remember defence budgets were then falling in both Western Europe and in Russia. And so this was a time when we could have moved a lot further, a lot faster towards a peaceful future.

  50. It's normally in an interview you get sound bites in very little time, so you often impressions are gained which are not necessarily fair or accurate. I think you have to go back to 1990-91. The Soviet Union collapsed partly, but not wholly, partly because of their occupation of Afghanistan. That was a big factor politically within the Soviet Union, the collapse of it. There was then the attempted coup against Gorbachev, and then Gorbachev went and Yeltsin came in and then the Soviet Union broke up and so on. That was the time nineteen ninety one onwards when the OECD Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, should OSCE, should have become NATO was then very much Western Europe and the US and Canada.
