  1. Shops kind of anywhere that you are, and it's interesting because it's a business that has very little technology today, but actually has a lot of complexities to it, both the back office and the front of house. And so I've been really excited to see them grow.

  2. Yeah, I think I'll hold off in the unannounced one because I don't like to kind of talk in these very generalizations if I can avoid it. One of my more recent investments, though, is a company called Squire, who is currently in Y Combinator about the demo in a couple of weeks. And these are just two incredible founders, Dave and Song, who have started from zero startup experience to now having built a product that has grown their revenue since I invested only a handful of months ago by 40x. And they were already doing decently well when I invested, which is why I did. And I think these guys have just done a great job to the posts that I wrote a couple weeks ago around looking at founders that are just unwilling to fail or unable to fail. That has been these guys. They've just crushed kind of every challenge that's come along. And they let you, Squire's company that lets you actually discover and barber.

  3. So, I would say, I don't know if this person is the biggest mentor or advisor. I don't want to offend anyone else if anybody else feels that way with me. But I think one person that I've come to have a really phenomenal relationship with is a guy by the name of Scott Switzer. And I met Scott when he was a venture partner at FirstMark. He was previously the founder of a company called OpenX, which is pretty large based in LA. And Scott actually brought me in to pitch my very first VC when I started my last startup. And that VC meeting went horribly. But we became close friends from there. I wound up working with him at his next startup called Giraffe, and I actually wound up investing in his latest company called Authenticated Digital. So Scott and I have been able to bounce ideas off of each other a ton. And I think that's actually what makes for the best mentors or people who actually gain from both sides as opposed to kind of a one-sided relationship.

  4. Every morning I read the skim. It's one way that I feel a little bit smarter. And I think that's the goal of it. The other one that I've more recently started following, it's not really a blog or newsletter, but it's a startup that's actually in TechSars, this disco round called Purple. And it's a bot that actually teaches me today about the election through really, really sort of concise, simple but personable conversational things around sort of what's happening both on the Hillary side and the Trump side. And for me, being kind of as busy as I am every day, it's great to be able to see that kind of twice a day when the messages come in.

  5. And it is very short, 140 to 160 character little blurbs after every conversation I have. And that's been a lot better than not taking notes at all.

  6. So, I think when that article came out, I definitely wasn't true, but it was quite the lead. I think there's two things that I do right now that help me to optimize my time so I can fit more in. One is meeting lengths. I always try to schedule meetings for either 25 or 50 minutes, leaving me the buffer to do whatever the follow-up tasks are. So I'm not back to back to back. And so giving myself 10 minutes after a 50-minute meeting means I can send off that intro email. I can write up a summary, send it to my partners, you know, whatever it takes. The other thing I would say is that I am terrible at taking notes. However, I am great at tweeting. And so what I learned was I should send myself notes in sort of 140 character chunks. That's something I'm good at kind of compacting those things that I'm thinking about down to that. And so I actually send myself an email.

  7. I have been reading this book every year for, I would say, the last seven or eight years now called Leadership and Self-Deception. It's by a group called the Arbinger Institute. I've actually never read anything else by them. However, this book talks about the fundamental challenge of thinking inside of the box, not really being able to kind of get out of your own way when you're sort of lying to yourself. And I would recommend it to anybody that's creating a business to pick up this book. It's a very fast read.

  8. In that. We obviously communicate it now better than when you walk into the door and the floor isn't finished. However, So I think having that opportunity is really actually quite exciting. And I think if people embrace that, they'll actually leap forward when it comes to their product or their business or kind of anything else in their life.

  9. Way that our members handled when we moved to our second WeWork labs location, which was on Varrick Street. And we walked into the building on opening day and construction wasn't done. We had 220 people that were going to move into this floor, and they couldn't move in on opening day. You know, we fortunately don't have this problem anymore. However, what was amazing to me was we actually not only were able to kind of smooth it over, and I think we took everybody out to the bar maybe and we helped people try to find conference rooms to work out of whatever it was. But the other thing we learned in the process is that our members and our customers actually understood these problems, right? They were not as distraught, honestly, as I thought they would be. And we learned that people were more resilient than we thought, which actually led us down the path of now we're able to test and iterate on physical spaces inside of WeWork with real members sometimes because we know they're willing to sort of

  10. Yeah, I think there's one major thing that I probably do when kind of to your point the shit hits the fan. And I think that is I try to kind of look at what the problem is at face value and I try and say this could be worse first off. It could always be worse. But the other thing is the question is what kind of an opportunity arises when you have that problem? So when your site is down, you know, for you, the thought may go through your head first, you know, oh shit, it's broken, I need to fix it. But the second thing may be, oh, well, this gives me a great opportunity to kind of think about how I make this better for the future. And I think that, you know, we had many stories in the earliest days of WeWork where we didn't have power for a floor for whatever reason. And you learn really amazing things about your customers and for us, our members, in that moment, a story that I can think about is the

  11. We need to build out a sales organization that now works globally. Okay, nobody here has done that before. Well, what's step one? I think step one is making sure that we have an understanding of where we have to sell, you know, and that's something that I was able to kind of figure out very rapidly with the team there. And so I think that that same skill of problem solving as an operator is something that I hope to put to work as I wind up sitting on boards when we lead deals or when we're sitting in kind of the brainstorming room is we're solving challenges across our portfolio. I'm hoping that I'm able to kind of put that same skill to use for every company that I work with.

2016-08-31 · The Twenty Minute VC · 20VC: Why Great Founders Are Both Visionary & Stubborn, The Investment Mindset Shift From Angel To VC & How To React When The 'S*** Hits The Fan?' with Jesse Middleton, General Partner @ Flybridge Capital Partners · IDENTIFIED FROM THE TRANSCRIPT · source

  12. Really good at that as I face kind of each of those six roles that we work. In some cases, I was starting off from less than zero. I mean, I had never participated in an organization like that. Other times I had a little bit of knowledge about the industry. The second component is then being able to sort of break down this challenge into small enough chunks. And this goes back to being able to make very active changes that you can kind of see very rapidly is break down these problems into very small chunks where you could make a decision, you could test something. And the same way that a startup in the earliest days tests and iterates and learns in order to get something like product market fit, later stage companies like we work are also doing this, just not at the necessarily the massive product level, right? It's really hard to build and then tear down and then rebuild a building overnight. However, you know, you do do this when you come into scaling challenges. You say, okay, great.

  13. A great question. I actually had a conversation with my mother a couple of weeks ago. I have a son who's now about five and a half months old, and we were talking about just kind of school in New York. It's a whole other topic. One of the things is, you know, having your child kind of test it and they do kind of aptitude tests and IQ tests and things like that. And I said to my mother, I said, you know, did I ever get these tests when I was a kid? And she said, yeah, actually, when you were young, they did this aptitude test and she said, well, you scored kind of in the middle of the road for mathematics and English and social studies, things like that. She said, there's this one area that they called problem solving that you scored in like the 98th percentile. And she said, quite honestly, we had no idea what that meant. And we also had no idea what you would do with that, right? Later on in life. And what it turns out is that being a great problem solver entails kind of, I think, two things. One is being able to learn rapidly about almost any subject. And I think I've been.

  14. Miss and the lucky thing for me is that will probably take me a couple of years to have to face that problem. When I'm investing in a company at a seed stage, I will get the opportunity to really sit in the room, whiteboard on ideas, and really work through the challenges that they're facing with them. And ultimately, I do think that'll be as much as I want to get into the weeds today. And I'll learn over time if it's something that I really need to get back into.

  15. It's a good question. I spent 10 years as an operator Cross being a network security consultant through being in a public company, through starting startups. I will say that I don't miss it today. I may miss it in the future. I think the nice thing about what I'm doing now and with my partners here at Flybridge is that we are able to invest kind of across the spectrum from relatively early seed, a $250,000 check on up. And because of that, I will get the opportunity to invest in and to participate in very actively at the earliest stages of a company. The question that I sort of ask myself is, as a company grows and it becomes more successful, big question for me is whether or not not playing an active role in those major decisions post Series A or Series B becomes something that I

  16. Campaign. And by tomorrow, we could see results. In the venture world, it is a slow moving business. It's not to say we as a fund make decisions relatively quickly, but those decisions that are made tend to take years to sort of see the outcomes from. And even when you sit at a board meeting, you know, every quarter, you might make choices, but you're not down in the weeds every day. And so I think for me, it's everything I expected it would be. that major mind shift is something that I'm still getting used to. And I love this business. I mean, I really, you know, so far I love it. But I think that it's something that is definitely a shock to me and didn't realize how large of a difference that was.

  17. It's a great question. I think that I didn't know exactly what to expect sitting on this side of the table. I think what I did realize is that I am extraordinarily excited to be doing this thing that I believe I really enjoy doing. And in all honesty, knowing they are any good at venture takes five years, seven years, sometimes ten years. So I can't really speak for if I'm going to be great at it. I think I will. What is really interesting is that there's a fundamental shift in how this business operates versus any other business I've been in. And while I understood the shift or the change or the difference, I don't think I could really grasp how large that was. And that change is that you go from a business where every decision you make every single day could affect change in the following day, right? You know, we could decide today to run a marketing.

  18. At a time or a category at a time, I can start to ask questions and learn about what people saw or didn't see in a company, whether they did or didn't back it. And I think everybody has their anti-portfolio. Some are larger than others. Some funds are very public about it. But ultimately, both the companies that won and the ones that didn't can both provide me a lot of insight. And eventually I'll start to be able to kind of pick these things out on my own because I'll have also looked at thousands of companies as a venture investor. But I think right now I'll leverage my team.

  19. Well, first things first, I think I'll listen a lot. The next six to probably nine months will be spent predominantly listening. It'll be listening to pitches, but it'll also be listening to other investors, people we've invested with, people we might like to, definitely listening to my partners who are all 15 plus years older than I am with 20 years of venture experience each. My two months kind of are just the beginning. So I think there's a lot of listening. There's also We actually have a lot of data. Flybridge has been around for 15 years in our deal flow product, we have documented over 19,000 companies that we've looked at. That's an incredible number. I mean, I wouldn't have guessed that if you would have asked me before I joined. And over the years of Flybridge funds one through four, we've backed about 80 companies. So I think as I slowly make my way through DealFlow and I take it a piece.

  20. Yeah. And so, but at the same time, I also realized that it is a business, right? And so I think that's a fundamental shift for me is that I went from it being sort of a hobby, a 20% thing to being my business. And I'll learn over time what that means. And I'm sure I'll have a number of losses. Hopefully I'll have a number of wins as well. But I think that's sort of the biggest thing is I have to view it as kind of a whole vehicle. I mean, that's what it is, right? It is a company with a number of investors ourselves. And so I had to treat it the same way I would if I were building any other company.

  21. First investors in Uber or Airbnb or WeWork feel the way that I'm feeling now. And I think the answer is it's a mixed bag. I think sometimes you feel stronger than others. But what I realized in the process and what I learned from my partners and others in the industry is that that's probably one of the biggest changes from being a personal investor to being a venture investor is you're thinking about not only the success of each company, but also sort of the success of the fund as a whole. And depending on how your fund is structured, that can mean that you need to pay back the whole fund first. And that's how people wind up making money in this business. And so I feel very fortunate that I get to spend every day doing something that I love to do as it sounds you do too, Harry. I think that

  22. Yeah, I mean, I think that as I looked at doing my first deal, which we haven't announced yet, I definitely had to put on a slightly different lens. And I think the biggest thing is what I was talking about earlier, that it's a business of kind of outliers. And so I actually asked my partners this question, which was I saw this company that we were looking at and I felt unwavering belief based on my history that this company could be a billion dollar company or more, right? This is sort of the line. You're a seed investor. You're going to get diluted later on in rounds if these companies do really well. You want to make sure that there's enough ownership, that it's worthwhile and that ultimately if it's big enough, it can pay back the whole funder, it could be the one winner. I had this view, this vision that in this deep-seated belief that this company was one of those companies. And I asked my partners, I said, how often do we feel this way? Like how often did the

  23. And helpful way is definitely an acquired skill. It's something takes time. I think my time as an operator across public companies and private managing all different people, people that were local and people internationally helped me a lot early on to kind of understand the cultural differences and allowed me to kind of have those more difficult conversations. And I really do hope that I will try my hardest to give that critical feedback at the most critical time to anybody in my portfolio, you know, or not in my portfolio. So if I'm meeting with a company, you know, and hopefully people will take that to heart and they'll understand that it comes from a good place and they'll be able to make that decision on their own after hearing that feedback.

  24. I very much hope that I do approach it the same way. I can tell you sort of anecdotally one company in my personal Angel portfolio, which is currently 15 companies, was struggling at a point before they ultimately did shut down. And I think one of the things that I kind of shared with them was as your investor and as your friend and as your advisor, my goal should be to try to help you to be the most successful you could be. And as an angel, it's slightly different than venture because it's your own personal capital. And so you can decide kind of on your own or I could decide on my own how much that mattered to me if I lost that capital or not when there's other people's money involved. There's a different kind of fiscal duty. But I think that the story is still the same, which is you're trying to make sure that you help people to be the best that they can be. And ultimately giving hard or critical feedback in a friendly way.

  25. Them and look at both the market and their team and their company and their customers and be able to actually say, wait, I think that vision needs to be put on hold. I think it needs to be shifted a bit, sometimes shifted a bit could be a massive shift, like bourbon thins the grand. And in other cases, it's just a little tweak on the model. We thought we were going to sell to this customer segment, but instead we're going to focus on this other one. Whatever it is, though, it's important to be able to sort of have that inner dialogue with yourself as a founder because you don't really have a ton of support early on, right? You don't have big boards or advisor networks. And so it's usually you, maybe your co-founder and one or two mentors in your life who have kind of done it before.

  26. Look, I wish there was a perfect formula for it, but I think that I wrote something, I think it was a couple years ago now about kind of it being really important to have a hypothesis in order to prove whether or not your hypothesis is correct, you have to have one, right? It's pretty simple. I think that the vision matters from day one because you need to know that if things go well, where sort of the goal line is, where the end goal is, the other reason to have the vision and to have this hypothesis as to where that vision is going to be is you also need to pay attention to sort of the signals around you. And when you start to learn that either that vision isn't correct, that hypothesis that you had about the business that you're entering isn't correct, you need to be able to see that for what it is. You need to be able to take a step back. And so great founders both need to be visionary and stubborn to your point, but also have to be self-reflective and have to be able to kind of look at what's happening around.

  27. The company happens. Some servers go down and now you're getting terrible calls at three in the morning being yelled at, you need to be able to turn on to every one of those roles on a dime. And I think my time at WeWork was spent, I guess, six official roles during my time that I was there, but I probably worked on 10 different groups during my time. And that actually spanned from everything from business development and corporate development through running our inside sales team through helping to launch our Los Angeles market. It really didn't matter what the problem was. I was able to kind of adapt to it. And I think now that I'm on the venture side, I would say that I am absolutely looking for people just like that because I think they're the ones that will make it through.

  28. I think the thing that I realize is that, so the venture world is a business of outliers, right? The fund could return, and I've heard you talk about this with other investors on the show, funds will return all different amounts, but if you wind up backing one Uber or one WeWork, one Airbnb, one Facebook, that's the winner. That's the big thing there. What I realized through being at WeWork and having talked to thousands of companies over the last number of years is that the companies that tend to, the operators that tend to be the most successful tend to be the ones that are just amazing at putting their heads down, not trying to do everything at one time, but being capable of doing everything at one time. And the reason it's important is that in the earliest days of a company, you actually don't know when your first customer might come along or when you're first, God forbid, problem.

  29. Out of school to start working in the technology world, actually looking back prepared me better than anything else I could have planned on to go into the venture world, albeit I didn't know it then. That's where I was going to wind up.

  30. Companies needed outside of a three month accelerator program to help crafting their pitch, reaching other community members, fundraising, things like that where we just thought we could be helpful. And in all honesty, there was a little bit of selfishness there, which was if there were great investors and great people coming through to help all the other members, I could benefit as well. And so I think it was a very symbiotic relationship amongst the first sets of members. Ultimately, fast forward five and a half years, I left Weork a few months ago to say I'm going to focus full-time on investing. I had been doing it on my own for about a year and a half already as an angel and I backed a number of kind of what I think are very interesting companies and more importantly great founders, great people. And I think that I think that the last 10 years of my professional career, I draw.

  31. Well, thank you. Yeah, so I came to be a part of WeWork just a handful of months after Adam Miguel put kind of the ink on the paper to forming the company. And we work was really started and people don't necessarily believe me when I say this. You know, a lot of times companies start as a side project or some other idea and then it morphs into this. Adam Miguel's vision was always to build a company that was going to be this global professional network of entrepreneurs and small business owners and to be quite honest when I first met them, I didn't get it. I saw this amazing workspace in Soho that I could go take my startup to at the time, but very quickly became enamored with kind of the vision and what we were trying to create.
