“He's in his 70s and he's in a great state for him. And I don't know, you know, he may not want to serve again. The bet they made, and I would say this publicly, I think was a bad bet that I'm going to keep my mouth shut on Trump now because I don't want to piss off Trump's voters. Trump's going to lose, and then we'll be fine. I think that's all misguided because I don't think, I do think Trump will lose, but I don't think he's going anywhere. I think he's going to be in our faces and in the Republican Party's grill with Sean Hannity. They're going to start their own fucking network. They're going to do whatever. They're going to make life miserable for the Republican Party. So these people like Rubio and the rest cruise who think Trump's just going to go away. I think they're wrong.”

“Really disappointing because again, I will say Kara till I'm blue in the face because I've heard enough from them that Marco Rubio in private believes Donald Trump is a moron. He believes Donald Trump is a pathological liar. He believes Trump is bad for the Republican Party in the country. So why doesn't Marco Rubio say any of that publicly? Nikki Haley, Kara, believes the same thing. The reason they don't say any of it publicly, and they've told me privately, is because not because they fear Trump, they fear Trump's voters. Most of these Republicans care. They believe and they felt this way for a year that Trump's going to lose in November. They want him to lose. I had plenty of them tell me privately, look, Joe, why am I going to say anything publicly now? Trump's going to be gone in a year and a half. He'll lose, and then we can go back to the way things were. I think a lot of them made that bet.”

“Republican voters who did want to vote for me wouldn't because they were afraid of their neighbors. And on and on it went. I ran into the cult.”

“I ended it the Friday before the New Hampshire primary, so the first week in February. And the way to sum up, I ran into two things, Kara. You're right, Don Quixote. I knew it was a long shot. But with this guy, again, Donald Trump's president. So, I mean, what the fuck? Anything can happen now. Again, I thought at least Republicans will be on the record. The campaign ended because during Iowa, in the week before the Iowa caucus, I mean, it just became clear that I ran into the cult 99% of his supporters don't believe what you and I believe about Donald Trump. And I ran into the party. They canceled 20-some primaries all over the country. So they made it really impossible for anybody to challenge him. I mean, Republican donors who want to give me money wouldn't because they were afraid of Trump.”

“Thought it was really important for a Republican to say publicly that the guy's unfit. You know he's unfit, but you weren't somebody like Kara Swisher wasn't going to run in the Republican primary. The Democrats knew a lot of independents knew, but the Republican Party, the party that I'd been a member of forever, was not on the record calling out his unfitness. I had written an article in the New York Times like in July pleading with a Republican, Mitt Romney, John Kasich. Come on, somebody better than Joe Walsh, get out there and say he is. Because again, Kara, they all believe it. Romney believes it. Kasich believes it. Rubio believes it. They all do. Nobody stepped up. And so I did. I spoke to people like George Conway and Bill Crystal, all of the Never Trumpers, and I wasn't a Never Trumper to begin with. But I put my neck out there because I thought it was really important for a Republican on the record to say.”

“We're here with Joe Walls, the author of the book, Fuck Silence, Calling Trump Out for the Cultureonic and Authoritarian Con Man He is. I think that just about covers it, Joe. Talk about your run for president. You obviously realized it was sort of a Don Quixote kind of thing. What were you thinking?”

“I get anger and I get people who stop listening to me on the radio. Kara, the most uncomfortable period of my recent history was the last three years I was on the radio. Because as I moved away from Trump and I criticized him and I went after all this stupid conspiracy shit and I would go after Sean Hannity. I mean, I did that in the lion's den. And so it was the megaheads would call me and say, you're a traitor. How dare you turn against us? And they'd stop listening.”

“Again, anybody different, the other, so that Chinese, Wuhan, I mean, that's the flip of, you know, brown people down in Central America and Mexico. So ultimately, if it's not Hillary, it's not Obama, it's not the deep state, the FBI, or Bill Gates, then it's those other people who don't look like me. And when you push back.”

“Doesn't matter, but Kara, they don't believe, they disagree with you and me right now. A lot of these people don't believe they're powerless. They're part of some they're connected to the deep state. You know, you got all these people. They're part of this. Oh, Soros is funding all of them and they're still working against their leader. It is a cult. George Soros and Hillary Clinton and the Deep State and everybody else, they're working against their cult leader.”

“Does that still work? Because again, they want to in their heads, and I'm speaking of, it makes me sad, but I'm speaking of all of my former supporters and followers. They want to believe the worst of these people. It was like a week ago, two weeks ago with this pandemic, Obama was one of the first ones that Trump threw out there. It's always a great thing for the base to blame Obama because they don't like Obama. He's different. He's an other. And yeah, it does still work with them. Hillary still works with them because nothing gets them going more than like Bill and Hillary and the Clinton Foundation and all of that. So it does, sadly, still work.”

“Because the Republican Party Kera is not a party. It is a cult. It's a fucking cult. And so when your cult leader does something wrong, you can't admit he did something wrong. So what people on my side do is they got to go after something else. They go after Obama. They go after Mexicans or they go after Hillary Benghazi. Benghazi, right? If your guy doesn't do, if he screws up like this guy does plenty of times because you can't admit your leader screwed up, then you go back to the old boogeymen of the past and Hillary is on that team photo. And so I think that's what a lot of people on my side do.”

“I had given that enough credence before he got elected, but I was on the radio around the country, on the conservative talk radio guy, and I kind of bit my tongue a little bit. Yeah, he's a bad guy, but he's not Hillary. So I'll try to do the good cop, bad cop thing. And it didn't work. It didn't feel good to me.”

“Well, that was the final straw. So plenty built up to that. Kara, I think we all do this. We all are partisan to a degree and we're all tribal to a degree. And I think everything's been magnified with Trump. We elect people from our side. And even if we know they've got flaws and they say stuff we don't like and they do stuff we don't like, generally if they're on our side, we'll still support them. I think he can find examples of this on both sides. I agree with you, though, in that I am guilty. And I, look, when I primaried Trump, I had to publicly apologize for seven years for seven months. Maybe too much. But I did help put him in the office because I think he is a uniquely bad person. And I wish, I mean this, Kara, I wish I...”

“Oh, God, yeah. Well, off the record. Yeah, off the record. Look, when I ran against Trump, I lost, I was under pressure every day. You do conservative talk radio the last three years. You got to suck Trump's toes. I mean, you've got to kiss his feet, and I wouldn't do that. So I was going to lose my radio show no matter what. But Kara, I'm not exaggerating if I had a dollar for every one of my former congressional colleagues who've told me privately over the last two years that he is a fucking moron. They know he's a bad dude, but they're not going to say anything. I'd be a wealthy guy because most Republicans, you know this, you've been told this. Most Republicans on Capitol Hill can't stand him.”

“When he stood in front of the world and said, I believe Putin and not my own people. To me, that was like an act of treason. And I said, I went on the radio that night and I said, ain't no way I can ever support this guy again. Because of this, because of this, not the numerous other things. I think that's one of the issues a lot of.”

“I didn't pay attention to him, which is weird because I was on the radio around the country. But again, I just figured he was kind of a goof. After he got elected, I began to pay attention to him. And it was the line that started. Not the war. Not when he had the pussy thing, not when he had the, why didn't you pay attention to that? Well, I did, and I criticized him for stuff like that. But again, I just figured, okay, this is part of who he is, but oh my God, if he becomes president, he'll clean that shit up a little bit. But then after he got elected and I focused on what he did and said every day, I'm not exaggerating 99% of the stuff that comes out of his mouth is a lie. You and I may disagree on stuff politically. I can't support a president who lies to me like this. So that built up over time. And then the final straw for me was Helsinki in the summer of 18.”

“Not that because the people who adore and worship Donald Trump were the same people who sent me to Congress and they're the same people who listened to me on the radio for six years. I mean, they fucking believe this guy walks on water. Trump blocked me on Twitter during the 16 campaign because I would criticize him. When he got elected, Kara, I tried to do the whole Good Trump, bad Trump thing that lasted about two months, where I'd praise him if I thought he did something good and I'd beat him over the head when he didn't. It became clear to me a few months in that there's a bigger problem here. So what was the turning point for you? Because it was relatively early in that you and Conway and Justin and Mash is later. You know, and Rick Wilson, they're just sort of McCain. I think the McCain sort of set them off. What set you off in particular? Kare, I'm guilty of one big thing. I didn't pay enough attention to Trump during the 16 campaign. I've talked to Conway about this.”

“Party became something different and ugly. And Trump took advantage of that. So by the time Trump came along, and most people on my side of the aisle realized the Republicans didn't give a damn about the debt. So then the Tea Party became close up our borders. I don't want anybody in America who doesn't look like me. And that's what Trump then demagogued. Now, I did, Kara. I voted for Trump in 16. I didn't love him. I didn't like him. He wasn't Hillary. I figured he was a goof, but maybe he'll appoint a couple good people, maybe a couple good things might happen. That was the group of, that's a group of Republicans who sort of were like, I'd like my tax breaks. I'd like my judges. I'd like some of the stuff. So I'll put up with him, which I think a lot of people were, a lot of people were. Yes, I think a lot of Republicans were like that. But his base, his cult following was.”

“But does your mother care a little bit more only because he's been lying about a pandemic? He's been lying about something that's killing Americans. I've heard from Republicans who've said, Joe, it's one thing for him to lie about the size of his attendance and how much money he's worth. But when he's lying about a disease that's killing the American people, I think that's pissing off even people like your mom a little bit. Just a little bit. So talk a little bit about your journey because you really were a big Trump supporter. I mean, I remember really talk about it. No perceive of you. Talk about your journey. You were in Congress. Yeah. And I was, and this is probably when you hated me. I was one of the most outspoken tea party people who went to Congress in 2010. And again, I know you and I could spend 10 hours talking about the Tea Party. The Tea Party to me was we're bankrupting future generations. I was pissed at both parties for doing it. Now the tea party.”

“Two things, and I talk about this in the book, and when I primary Donald Trump, it's all I focused on. And Conway and I are buddies, so I think he means the same thing. Trump's unfitness is basically two issues. He can't fucking tell the truth. Kara, every time he opens his mouth, he lies. And then the second thing is he can't put anything or anybody in front of himself. All he cares about is himself. So when you're the president and you can't literally put the country before your own self interests, it's a problem. Look, you and I know he lies, but I think, again, a lot of Americans who don't pay attention to politics don't realize that, didn't realize that until the last few months because. Or they don't care. But here you got it. My mother doesn't care. My mother doesn't care. She thinks this is her line. All politicians lie.”

“Karen, great to be with you. Look, I think Donald Trump is unfit. He's unfit to be president. And I think my hope is that people who are not addicted to politics are beginning to realize that now with this horrible pandemic my hope is that his unfitness is becoming more evident to the body politic at large.”
