  1. I think they've forgiven me already. I mean, a lot of people had a pop at me in 2018 when I joined the Tory party. But the same people, a lot of them, 18 months later, voted for me. So I think the electorate are more nimble now they vote. They know they can punish parties. They did it with Brexit. They did it in 2019 at the general election. They know that their vote can make a big difference. So if you don't behave yourself, if you don't do what you said you were going to do, they're going to go out and boot you out.

  2. I'll have to go grandja. That's why I keep having these feelings, and I don't know. I keep trying to stamp it out, but they keep coming back.

  3. I'm starting to feel guilt towards how we treat animals and stuff like that. I think that's an age thing. See things differently as you get older.

  4. I don't think I am actually. I mean, I am toying. To be honest with you, Nick, I'm getting vegetarian feelings as I get older. I'm getting these pangs, whatever you call them. So I think I'm...

  5. No, why don't you see the other ad lounge when people are attacking me, the other ring will say, Daddy, okay? He looks after you? Yeah, he looks after him, yeah.

  6. It was sad that I'd left the Labour Party. Probably a little bit angry with him as well because I'm his dad. Probably angry that I didn't tell him because everything was such a whirlwind at the time. And I suppose he felt a little bit let down by me as well. But, you know, that's what happens in families. Sometimes you feel like your family loved ones, Dan, and he hadn't. I thought I did it for the right reasons. But now, you know, it's totally over it.

  7. And a corbanite, yeah. Believed in all that. And when I joined the Tory party, I think it was because it was in that circle of friends as well at university, like a left-leaning socialist group of friends. When the news broke, because it broke, I think it broke on the BBC. It was very, very upset. And he wrung me. It was deeply upset. But, you know, we're still best of friends.

  8. No, no. Harry, bless him. He went to university in Sheffield. He'd only been there six months and came back a different man. He'd got his beard and he was a vegetarian and obviously changed for the worse, I think, actually. First vegetarian ever in our family. But he was a Labour Party member and the idealistic, a nice young man.

  9. I think he will deliver on, of course, any government that puts taxes up, people are going to be looking. But I think he'll do it. I think next year we've got budget coming up this month, actually. We'll see. We'll see.

  10. We were all on the top. Political parties, especially if you're in government, are all on the Titanic at some stage, aren't you? We've got to get the course right, steady the ship, and deliver on our promises. If we do that, we'll be fine.

  11. What I will say to that, and this is not a politician's answer, I don't change my opinion on anything just because I've had a promotion. What I said six weeks ago, I'll stand by it. Anything, including small boats, including the economy.

  13. I don't think everybody's got a right to chuck the hat in the ring at some stage. I don't think he will do. I think his day is gone, but he's still a big force in politics, Boris says, is a big character. People want to meet him, regardless of what you think about him, is a big draw, is Boris.

  14. That's a good question. I haven't been asked this a few times. I don't think Aegea's on his side, to be honest with you. I think he's coming up to 60. I'd love him to have a go for London Mayor again. I think that would be interesting because I think he'd win in London. I think he'd beat Con because we need to get rid of him. He's not been good for the city.

  15. Well, I would argue against that. I would say people like Jacob and Rishi don't have to be an MP. Why would they go through all the nonsense they go through on a daily basis? I think I genuinely believe they do the job because they love the country and they want it to keep this country great. And that's why I do the job. And I'm not bothered how much money anybody's got, as long as they're there for the right reasons, which is looking after our country, that's fine by me.

  16. Not Good question. I think the Tory party is a broad church. And why should you not mix with somebody cost they're rich? Or they've been to a better school than you or had a better upbringing? And the one thing that runs through the Tory party I've noticed is aspiration. And a lot of the rich people I do mix with, not just at that place but out in business now because I get the chance, they've all started from humble roots, a lot of them. They've started in that shed, in the kitchen, started the business, you know, come from a councillor state and worked hard, done really, really well. And I'm thinking, you know what, this is what I want for this country. I want people to have a dream. I want people to know that anything's possible in this country. And it is if you work hard enough, you put the hours in, you have a little bit of luck and you've got the right attitude.

  19. Because they're good local Asheville people. No, there's people in that scooter club who are left, who are socialists, who are Labour Party members that would never vote for me. But that's not highlighted either, is it?

  23. Well, yeah. Listen, I mean, this can be Scooter Club. He's got about 200 members, I think it has, and male and female. They did lots of charity work throughout the community. They have nights, they have charity nights, they're always booked up. And, you know, for me to be photographed with a couple of people who might have had far right leanings many, many years ago at a charity do where they'd raise a lot of money for local good causes. I mean, they didn't show all the other photos that had taken that night with other people.

  24. No, no, no, no. You're obviously not listened to what I've just said. I said the perfect legitimate right to protest, and that's a fundamental right in this country. But they get hijacked, these protests do. They always do. You know that.

  25. Yeah, there will be whatever demonstration you see it out here outside Parliament, you'll have a perfectly legitimate demonstration. It might be on pay or public sector, whatever. Yes, they're allowed to do that. But then you'll see some of the left-wing loons hijacking it with their socialist worker boards and banners. Ironically, a lot of these socialist workers probably never worked in their life.

He didn't get on a boat and escape to America and then send for his family. He could put a uniform on God again and went to fight for this great country of ours. And that's what is in the hearts and minds of a lot of my constituents.

  31. But there's lots of people staying in those war torn countries, Nick, isn't there? You know, what people don't like is the optics of tens of thousands of young men. We're not seeing very often it's women and children and vulnerable people. And that if we saw that, there may be people, you know, the general public, and especially in places like Asheville, they'd be more sympathetic. But they have

  32. You've hit the nail on the head. They've come here for a better life. They're not asylum seekers. They're abusing the asylum system. We know that. I mean, I spoke to the young men in the camp in Cali. None of them were fleeing violence or persecution. They came, they were coming to the UK and the words they kept saying was Eldorado, Eldorado. And all they're doing at this care for Calicamp, they're walking them through the asylum process. They meet them when they get to the hotels in the UK, walk them through the asylum process again. They're being coached and they're abusing the system.

  33. I do, yeah. I mean, when I hear that protesters are protesting, and these aren't far right. From some of these towns and villages that are upset that overnight, two or three hundred young men have arrived and they're saying things to young girls. I know there's been a few attacks and some horrible incidents. So of course people are going to be concerned. That's just human nature. At the end of the day, when you live in a community, you expect to be safe and you don't like sudden change. That's how humans behave.

  34. Yeah, the obvious is a big problem. That's the obvious going to create as big social problems in this country. We've got undocumented tens of thousands of young men coming in from all over the world. We don't know who they are, where they've been. Some are just blatantly lying when they go through the process.

  35. Just out the whole of Parliament was like that. Not just my own party. I thought the whole of Parliament was just not taking it seriously. As it is, it comes up all the time on the doorstep. Our inboxes are full of it. We've now got leafy suburbs where the hotels are full of illegal migrants. I went to Calais the other week and witnessed firsthand the nonsense that's going off there. It scares me. It frightens me.

  37. Yes, he probably was. Just to be clear. But the message was stay and fight. Let's get him changed. Gloria led the coup. I was part of that. Get rid of him. Let's get back to a proper Labour Party. But that battle's lost.

  38. Yeah, well, I mean, they used to sit in the council meetings as a Labour councillor with Tory councillors, and they were saying and thinking, what I was saying and thinking, you know, they were all about personal responsibility. Actions have got consequences. They were saying sensible things. Meanwhile, my lot were banging on about having a book of condolence when Fidel Castro died. And I'm thinking, this is not what Ashfield people are talking about. They were talking about Palestine in council meetings. There's no Palestinians in Ashefield. They were just talking about these silly ideology of wanting to start a revolution and, you know, the hated the Tories, they were loving Corbyn and McDonald. These are characters I actually despised.

2023-03-03 · Political Thinking with Nick Robinson · The Lee Anderson One · IDENTIFIED FROM THE TRANSCRIPT · source

  39. No, not all Where the travelling community visit my village a couple of times kept making a mess they wouldn't go I kept asking to have barriers fixed and to stop them coming back they wouldn't do it so I blocked the car park off myself with a JC being a couple of boulders my community loved me for it but the Labour Party didn't like it But the real reason they got rid of or tried to get rid of because I was never suspended by the Labour Party that's a myth is because they didn't like me and I don't think like Gloria that was because she was centre to the right quite sensible but I was in a Labour group meeting in February 2018 I think it was when one of the memento members said to me have you ever read the works of Karl Marx and I said no I've not it said you off then and join the Tory party so I said you know what mate that's not a bad idea so I did and then within 18 months I was his MP So the Labour Party gave great

  40. And I thought the whole point of Leander is don't give me a party. No, I've spoken to the party many, many times, you know. But now I've got a bit more of a voice.

2023-03-03 · Political Thinking with Nick Robinson · The Lee Anderson One · IDENTIFIED FROM THE TRANSCRIPT · source

  41. Yeah, it keeps generation after generation poor and it stifles aspiration and it ruins children's outcomes, educational outcomes, expectations. I saw a family when I was working for Gloria. It was a man and a woman. They never worked. They had five children. I think three of the children was on disability living and allowance for ADHD, behavioural problems. They was getting £53,000 a year net. Now, to get that sort of wage, you've got to be earning over £70K. We know that. But the worst thing for me with that was not the actual amount of money I was getting, it was their children were labelled as disabled. So when they left school, they were going to be in the same, having the same problems as the parents. And we're not breaking the poverty cycle. It's cruel because we're ruining people's lives.

  42. But that's how most people live their lives now. You know, all my friends and family and colleagues and lots of constituents I mix with in the pub at the weekend. That's their philosophy. If they want anything, they save up and pay for it

2023-03-03 · Political Thinking with Nick Robinson · The Lee Anderson One · IDENTIFIED FROM THE TRANSCRIPT · source

  43. Well, the point I was making was people more resourceful when I was growing up as a child, not just in Ashworth, probably all over the country. They were more resourceful. These were the children, my parents were the children of men that had fought in the war. They'd gone through very, very difficult times. So it was a different culture, there's a different outlook on life, and they made do. And when they were struggling, like my dad always said to me, you know, if you need more money, go and work a weekend shift, do a bit of overtime. It wasn't complain on Facebook or Twitter or go and do a TikTok video or just complain to government. It's your responsibility. If you want to have children, you pay for them. If you want nice things, you pay for them.

  44. And I've always said when I was working at CAB, we used to refer people to food banks, and at the time the Labour government was in. We weren't allowed to broadcast the fight, by the way. But look, suffer domestic abuse, lost the job, become ill, suddenly got a disability, had a major trauma in their life. The state, I think the state should be there to wrap the arms around them and help them in a difficult time. It should not be a way of life. I was brought up differently, and I'm a product of where I was born and I was brought up.

  45. You've got an agenda they've got my inbox is full of when I make these comments, these so-called controversial comments, which, by the way, are not controversial. My inbox floods from people, not just from Ashefield, from places like Barking, from all over the UK saying, you know what, Lee, thank goodness somebody's speaking out. We actually agree with you. I get pensioners contacted me from southern constituencies. It was on Peanuts, you know, they'd own less than 20 grand.

We need to help you to thinking, my goodness, in 10 years later, I was seeing the children of these families and thinking, we've not actually helped you. We've made it worse for you.

  49. Tell you what it was, Nick. When I first started working at CAB, we were seeing families that were coming in with all sorts of social problems, it was debt, it was housing problems, it was relationship problems, it was benefit problems, and we used to help these people. You know, this was 20 years ago, I think it probably is. And I would see these families and we'd patch them up and move them on and think, you know, I've done a really good job there. And then fast forward 10 years when I'm working for a Labour MP, I'm seeing the sons and daughters of these same families who've got the same issues. And I think to myself, my goodness, we've not solved anything here. All we've done is allowed a new generation of young people to come along and have the same problems that the mum and dad had. And that got me thinking that it was wrong in our approach, totally wrong.

  50. His advice bureau, which was very good to me. I learned some new skills, it kept me in the workplace, it kept my brain ticking over, and eventually I got a jobs advice bureau, and I did that for several years, and that sort of adrifted then into politics, and that's where I met Gloria when I was working at the CAB.
