“VC listeners get a trial month of him for just $5 today right now while supplies last. Go to fourhyms.com forward slash 20 VC. That's fourhyms.com forward slash 20 VC. So if hymns can transform yourself, Terminal can transform your company. As we all know, the reality of hiring amazing developers is hard and it's much, much harder if you only look within a 25 mile radius of your office. And that's where Terminal comes in. Terminal is your dedicated partner in rapidly standing up world-class remote technical teams. How do they deliver both speed and quality? Well, Terminal does this by focusing on everything necessary to successfully source, set up and support these teams from physical elements like beautiful workspaces and equipment to ongoing resources like HR, payroll, legal, professional learning and development, but don't take my word for this. Take the word of Eventbrite, hymns, and dial pad, all customers and lovers of terminal, and you can find out more today at Terminal.io. And finally,”

“Well, I think you can tell my fondness for Souza and for Leo there, but you can follow Leo on Twitter at lowvets. That really is a must. I love his tweets. Likewise, we'd love to see you behind the scenes here at the 20-minute VC. You can do that on Instagram at H stebbings 1996 with 2Bs. However, before we leave you today, I want to talk a little bit about hymns, a new wellness brand for men. So although I look positively young enough to be Harry Potter in disguise, doing three episodes a week is stressful. And did you know sixty-six percent of men lose their hair by aged thirty five? Ouch. And so you do not want a bald spot to pop up. Or do you want to do something about it first and be proactive? In that case, head to forhyms.com. The one-stop shop for hair loss, skincare and sexual wellness for men. Why do I love it? Well, there is no waiting room. Awkward doctor visits. It literally saves hours by going to forhyms dot com plus I'm busy and I don't really want to go to a store either and so they deliver right to your door. Enough said they really are awesome and”

“I mean, what an incentive to the interviews, but Leah, it's always such a pleasure to chat. But thank you so much for joining my Dulca British tones for another session with me. So thank you so much. And I can't wait to see the exciting times ahead with SUSA.”

“No, I think you're absolutely right. And I think you would be very aware of the advice you've given that the subsequent reaction to it. But I do want to finish, Leo, on finally, your most recent publicly announced investment. And tell me, why did you say yes and get so excited?”

“Yeah, no, I absolutely agree with you there in terms of that signal. I do, though, want to move into the quick fire round, Leo. You know how this works. I say a short statement. You give me your immediate thoughts. About 60 seconds per one. Does that sound good? Sounds great. Okay, so I'm going to fly to SF and I need a book for the flight. What is my must read on the flight?”

“I can agree anymore. I think the entrepreneurial grassroots brand that gets delivered when you really serve all companies in the portfolio is crucial. I do have to ask one final question that is something you just said there, which is obviously the difficulty in determining the true all-stars from the portfolio at such early stages. Do you think then subsequently it's fundamentally almost naive to think that you can concentrate capital into the winners early and really build up ownership? And does that mean reserves should be allocated equally according to everyone?”

“ICANN integrated more with your consideration on price, absolutely. Finally, there's no point spending time with the poorly performing companies in the portfolio. At best, I'll return minute cents on the dollar. Just work with the rocket ships and concentrate time. Agree or disagree”

“They'll usually No, I agree with you in terms of founders. Giving you that if you earn your seat at the table for sure. Second one, whether it's six and eight or a 10 million pre, it really doesn't matter at seed. You're so early. It could be Airbnb. Do you agree what experiences come to mind here? I do believe.”

“Okay, so ownership's built on first. Chat, Leo. The notion that you can have a diverse seed portfolio and double down on the outperformers, it's a fantasy because the best get picked up by tier one multistage firms and you never see them again. What are your thoughts on this and why?”

“No, absolutely. I can't stand the ghosting for sure. But before we move into the quickfire, as I said, there's a couple of questions that I've wanted to ask you for so long and now I have the chance I'm going to take it. I'm going to call it a controversial captions. And so I hear statement and then you're going to share your thoughts. How does that sound? There's no quick fire, so have no fear on that. Are you ready?”

“I'm interested then so many strengths but what was the commonalities of the things that people enjoyed then on the flip side of that how you had to change”

“Totally, I agree with you on that data point. If we maybe flip sides of the table, it's easy to talk about kind of investor to founder feedback. If we flip the table, have you ever been given feedback by a founder or you as an investor? And how did you change as a result of that feedback, Leo?”

“So I can agree with you more on the importance of that kind of direct feedback, but I need your help here, Leo, because say I meet a founder and I'm passing on an opportunity and I write a detailed feedback response on why maybe it's not a fit for us. And then I get a page back telling me all the reasons that I'm wrong and it's rather an extenuous email. How do you think about that pushback and argument back from the founder and they're not getting into a chain of email threads back and forth? How do you think about that and look to mitigate that?”

“No, I totally agree. I think I always think of Reed Hastings actually with Netflix and moving from video delivery to kind of the Netflix that we have today and the reinvention there. But I do want to kind of talk about the element of feedback because I need your help here. Say an opportunity doesn't have flexibility, doesn't have most, and we're going to pass on this opportunity. It now comes to challenging elements of investor feedback. Starting on you, how do you think the right way to deliver this feedback to founders is when passing? Let's start with that.”

“Yeah, no, I couldn't agree more. I do have to ask, though, and maybe playing a little bit of a contrarian role here from me, people always view incumbents as this kind of impenetrable force having this defensible elements and motes attached to them. But they're always broken by fundamental platform shifts, be it fax machines, which then are usurped by name your technology. And kind of that defensibility or motive, the subsequent fax machine and the additional value from each is completely redundant. How do you think about defensibility with such foundational platform shifts and does it not actually render the mode argument almost obsolete?”

“Ask in terms of the importance of thinking about that at day one, when you're assessing an opportunity, what are the ways really which you can determine whether motion defensibility is central to a founder's thinking? What questions, what indicators, what science suggests that it's something that really is essential aspect of their thinking?”

“Okay, so starting at the very beginning of the funnel, we have the intro, and this warm intro is hailed element of the fundraising process as a must-have. However, when we chatted before, you said that they're usually dumb. So starting at the very beginning, why are these warm intros dumb?”

“What I'm so pleased you included in podcasts are in that background list, but I do want to structure the conversations, Daleo. Slightly starting with the intro between founder and VC, then discuss the importance of defensibility and how one views that today. Penultimately then discussing kind of investor feedback, I very much need your advice on that. And then two questions that I've just been dying to ask for so long now and I have to ask while I have the chance. Does that sound good, Leo?”

“No, I love that alignment of a fun to a startup and I completely agree with you on that one. You mentioned your time in operations there, not on the schedule, but too intrigued to ask. I constantly have people on the show that state either the benefits of not having an operational background, of having an operational background. How do you think about that dilemma and really being in the center of the VC world in the bay? How do you kind of approach that thought process today in the benefits of both”

“Welcome back, you are listening to the 20 minute VC with me, Harry Stebbings. I would love to see you behind the scenes on Instagram at h stebbings nineteen ninety six with two B's, and there you can submit both questions and guest suggestions for future episodes. However, to the showstay, and hopefully in everyone's career, there'll be people that go out of their way to help you. Well, this is very much the case with today's guest and his partner Chad. They've done so much for me, and I actually just feel very grateful for all their support. My word, I'm getting soppy in my old age. But time for the big reveal, and I'm thrilled to welcome Leo Polovets, general partner at Sousa Ventures to the hot seat. Sousa, I really should not say this, but are one of my favorite seed funds in the valley with a portfolio including the likes of check this out. Flexport Robin Hood Lend Up Kadium Regetti. The list really does go on. And as for Leo, prior to joining the world of VC, he started his career as the second non-founding engineer at LinkedIn. And after two years at LinkedIn, Leo spent three years at Google, largely working on real-time payment fraud detection.”
