“I think we have no choice. I gave a speech last December to the Economic Club, and then I spoke with him yesterday. And at the time in December, I said that we can't be a great global city unless we focus on inclusive growth, that we see the city as being something larger and bigger than the central business district. I repeated that message yesterday. And while yes, these problems are tough, they're daunting. They were daunting before COVID. They're even more daunting now. It's not a secret that way too many people live in poverty and that black and brown communities have a much higher rate of these underlying conditions that we now know are the death mail for COVID. 93% or higher than that of the people who have died had underlying medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, upper respiratory disease. “Well, it's an enormous challenge. And for me personally, processing those realities has been hard. When I first heard the data around African American, the impact on the African-American community, it immediately went to thinking about my mother. Now she doesn't live here, but she's 91 years old and has underlying conditions. I'm the youngest of four and my siblings are old enough that they fit into the demographic of over 60 and several have underlying conditions. So it's hard not to feel that personally. “She's doing fine. She starts her day off every morning with a Zoom conference call from her teacher with her classmates. So when I'm running out the door in the morning, she's engaged in whatever the day's events are. And then I come home at night and she has discovered Fortnite. So that's like the daily obsession between her and varying groups of friends. But, you know, it's hard. I mean, this would be a time where she'd be out running track. She's an athletic kid. She missed a lot of her basketball season because she had a broken leg. And so was very looking forward to track and then COVID hits. So we tried to kind of get that as much exercise as we can. We're fortunate enough to have a yard, so we do that, but it's not the same. And it's not the same of being with your classmates every day and that kind of intimacy, that close proximity.”

“Oh, I mean, as you might imagine, it ebbs and it flows. My personality is one where I don't get too high and I don't get too low. But certainly there are times when I feel like I've reached maximum capacity. And so I try to take some time for myself every day. Usually it's early in the morning. I'm an early riser, so I just kind of take some time to kind of slowly move into the day, kind of set myself emotionally. And then I definitely do it every night before I go to bed. Sometimes I'm so tired I don't need to. I just fall asleep. But there's an expression in the church that I grew up in about laying your burdens down. So what I try to do every night is just kind of let the burdens of the day to the side because they're going to be. There the next day. I don't need to wrestle with them all night long. Easier said than done, of course.”
