  1. Of experience, that the live streaming video experience adds another layer of interactivity to. And I think we're at the very early stages still of what people will end up watching on their mobile phones. And I think that format around mobile games is set to explode. And so I'm very excited about that one.

  2. Yeah, it's not public Last investment that I can talk about publicly, Mob Crush. Live streaming mobile games. We did the seed there, but we followed on into another round of funding. We treat all of those follow-on and pro rada opportunities as separate investments in terms of our thinking of whether to do them or not. But that one specifically is a company that we're really, really excited about. I love the live space, as I've mentioned before. Video, I think, is still in its infancy in terms of this next generation. And the team there is fantastic. Some people have worked with a long, long time in the past. And I think they're products spectacular. I think people really underestimate layering video content in context around games and apps. And I think of those mobile games that people spend so much time in as the formats of the future. And so we really don't think about them as a format, but it's something that people are comfortable with.

  3. No, it's not just those. It's working with people who might not have the right motivation, who might take that short-term route, who you wouldn't be proud to tell your mom or your dad about the investment you made. And so I've always felt proud of those investments. And I feel like I'm really fortunate. I have a lot of people who put a lot of faith in me and capital behind that faith to help bring companies into the world that in the hope, you know, I know this sounds a little Pollyannish, but hopefully make the world a better place. And in addition to that, our great businesses. And so to never feel like you have to compromise that is really special.

  4. Watched him walk away from tens of millions of dollars repeatedly because he didn't feel right about icky to him in that investment. Actually, that's the only red flag blackball that we have is if an investment makes us feel icky, we walk the icky rule. It's it. And it's like ironclad.

  5. Other than how to avoid getting on GQ's words we're stressless, there's a lot. It's an overwhelming amount watching the way that he... Balances life and sort of where he places priorities for people that don't know him. He's the best father and husband that I've ever seen and really is sort of like he's one of these people that's inspired me that you can't have all of that and build with an incredible partner in Crystal and be conscious and a present parent and still go out there and kill it. But I think Chris The thing I've learned most is how really to be to not fall prey to short-term games and compromises. There's not been a single decision that I've had to make while working with Chris at lowercase where I felt like it was a compromise of my moral compass.

  6. Yeah, I asked a couple questions during that product, AMA. I think Sam's brain and sort of his ability to synthesize really complex economic topics into really simple diagrams and articles, his column on the information. Without it, it would still be worth it. With it, it's a hands-down no-brainer. You should pay for it.

  8. Hustle is repeatedly understanding how to offer value to others in advance of asking for value for yourself. Not only doing that, but doing it often at a cost to yourself in order to improve somebody else's situation because you know that the long-term gain from that interaction will outweigh any short-term cost. Hustle is contributing to somebody else's success without asking for anything and really not even like with the like there's a challenge here around hustle. Oh, in a couple months, I'm going to try to cash in on that. It's really truly believing that if I just add value to other people, that there doesn't need to be a caption moment, that you're just doing because it's the right thing to do because you love doing it and because you can't help somebody else, that's a whole other level of hustle. I think today hustle gets marred in this idea of like, oh, it's just like I add value short term and eventually I'm going to ask him for a favor. I think there's a difference between that with some people out there have executed on

  9. Forward in the same direction. And I get some of that with working with the portfolio companies, but it's a very different sort of process. I'm no longer wearing a suit. I work from home. We don't have an office. I work from home. I had three people a foot away from me at CA, and today we have three people spread across a few cities in lowercase. And so a slightly different environment.

  10. The hardest thing is from CAA to lowercase, I'll be more specific, was being surrounded by people all day long. This career is the pantry career, even if you're part of a partnership, can be a lonely one, you're often standing out on a ledge defending investments when people still think they're crazy, and often the best ones are, and you sort of have to defend that. In my case, I get Chris to back me on those. But even sometimes he and I will have disagreements on those companies. And so it's a far lonelier place than being able to run down the hall and be 15 of your best friends and build a relationship with those agents over time and have your sort of say it was entirely predicated on teamwork and big sort of service groups surrounding clients and all pushing.

  11. Yeah, that's a firearound question. My dad got sick when I was 12 years old. And we went from having sort of a solidly middle class family to really being challenged, broke up the family unit and sort of forced me as the oldest among three kids to do a lot to support all of us. I look at that moment as a challenge and probably the thing that's made me most ambitious and given me the biggest chip on my shoulder is rather than pressing the reset button on our sort of family trajectory. I just wasn't going to let that happen. It gave me a lot of empathy and it gave me a lot of dread.

  12. Fooled by randomness of Cleb, it's always a humbling reminder that most people overestimate their personal contribution to success and underestimate circumstance. And I think that's just the theme that we consistently do as humans is underestimate how much our environment, our circumstance, and timing contribute to where we end up, whether we win or lose.

  13. Message group that anybody can subscribe to and get products every week or two that are still in early test flight mode that are generally alphas or betas of products. And it was just a service that we needed to build for our portfolio companies and non-portfolio companies to help people better discover the apps that we were playing with.

  14. No, no, but that's another example of it. Okay. As you've seen, firms build out and scale up and hire a lot of people to sort of better help, largely based on the CA model and Andreessen's case, to better help service clients by surrounding them with experts and hiring and marketing and distribution and business development. I think what you're going to see us try to do over the next few years is build out scalable versions of that that help portfolio companies from like how do we get a first few thousand beta testers on our platform playing with a product prior to release. And so that's a problem that we kept having with companies is like, how do you think about product iteration in a world where once you go on product hunt, you go live for the entire world and everybody will see you in your first v1.0. And so if you get featured, we're getting featured in Apple was likely the first time you had more than 1,000 or 2,000 users on your app, a product of lowercase apple, which is just a text.

  15. I appreciate that. The last thing I want to get into, because I don't think I extrapolate a little bit here, but I think it's the most important part of what we're going to be doing in the next few years. So I think my selection process is changing over the last, has changed over the last three years, gotten better at identifying, pattern matching one, anti-pattern matching another. And the other sort of category that I'm really focused on for the next year or two is rethinking the way that service is done, especially at seed space for companies. You'll see in the next few months a few different sort of outgrowths of that idea. I don't know if you pay attention. We launched a product called Lowercase Alpha.

  16. No question I need to do better on time management. And I think this is one that I just need to, part of the challenge you have when it's a really light, fun in terms of headcount. It's Chris Jackson and I. And because we're so collaborative, and we do see a lot of deals out there, I need to get better at how I manage through that time. And we've just brought on a new hire to sort of help focus in on building out processes to better manage how we're allocating that time. A third, a third, a third between like existing portfolio companies finding and nurturing new portfolio opportunities, and then sort of building out the service side and network and conferences and LP management fund management of our world.

  17. Am I helping you find a soft enemy? Am I helping you raise the next round of funding? Am I helping you with product work? Some of it's qualitative, some of it's quantitative, but those KPIs matter the most to me in that category.

  18. For a lot of this. If the last is service, this is one I spend most of my time on because I believe it feeds back into the other two really well, both in terms of selection in that we try to only select companies that we can help and make an impact on. Otherwise, we're sort of playing public stocks and there's nothing that feels more frustrating than seeing a company struggle and not have the skill or network or ability to help those. And so a loss is not as frustrating as a company that I couldn't help. That is probably the most in either direction because it impacts that entrepreneur will never say that that was helpful to our company. So the ultimate metric for all of these KPIs is will an entrepreneur tell a future entrepreneur to work with you because that's where we see most of our high profile, our most successful deal flow comes from the existing portfolio. And entrepreneurs that even entrepreneurs that we've passed on that send us deals because they know that will be helpful. And so I care them most about service.

  19. It's the hardest thing. I think I look to people who have been through multiple cycles and get advice from them. I've had a few conversations lately with VCs and people in different industries that have had multiple up and down cycles. Because if my early proxy signal for success in selection is follow on fundraising and health of those businesses, I can track health of business myself, but follow on funding is something that today, because of the fundraising environment and cheap access to capital, you're seeing perhaps a little too much exuberance in terms of the fall on financing. So that signal has gotten a little bit muddied and muddled over the last couple years. And so I guess I have to look to people who have been through multiple up and down cycles for sort of advice on is my selection process correct and have a little bit of faith. I'm lucky that I have Saka in a mentor who's seen up and down and also a sort of a good sounding soundboard.

  20. measure it by virtue of follow on funding you measure it by virtue of like attrition in those companies you measure it also by like companies that you're able to sort of help find soft landings i care a lot about that piece uh that sort of falls into the selection category and that you're helping great teams and great talent find that

  21. I like that one. So I guess I break my job down into three categories. Site selection and service. KPI1 is am I seeing the most, am I seeing all the deals that I could possibly want to get into at the C stage? And this is a combination of like fund structure, network, hustle, pay attention to companies out there. I do an okay job of sort of anti-portfolio tracking, a company that I love that I would have liked to be in, companies that I've passed on. So site is one that I sort of like, I make sure, hey, what percentage are we seeing just finger in the sky of the companies that we would like to be in? Am I doing enough job of communicating with the other funds and other deal flow sources that we have to make sure I'm seeing those? The second if it's selection, God, this is the hardest one to judge, I think as an early VC because your return framework is a decade plus in some cases.

  22. Yeah, it's a constant balance for me. It means that other things suffer in my life. I'm not, and I think one of the things you wanted to talk about a little bit today was around areas that I can improve as a VC and my responsiveness over email is clearly a category that I need to get better at. And I am ruthlessly efficient in that world until not where I need to be if I'm measuring my KPS, honestly. That is definitely a category. But I do think that curating the time that you spend with people and doing it in person and having meaningful periods of that time and not just like a traditional meeting, but like something a little bit out of the ordinary, like a trip or something like that where you're spending concentrated periods of time with people, I do those things probably more often than most as well.

  23. I'm learning a ton and also leaving an impression on somebody else, you know, hopefully being able to add value and being kind and empathetic. And I think those are the things that I care a lot about. The most analog form of brand building, but it seemed to work so far.

  24. Yeah, yeah, I'm public on all of it. M. Mazio on Snapchat. I love that medium. And in fact, when I started doing this year that I really enjoyed is just doing office hours on Snapchat. And so I do that. That's another thing that I do a lot. I'll just do open office hours. I'm going to do them in South By next weekend, probably at the lobby of the Driscoll Hotel and just open it up and maybe even live stream some of it so that people can sort of see these companies that are all sort of increasingly getting washed over in a brand driven Southbee. But it sounds really analog. The other thing that I do that I think contributes to building a brand is just take more meanings than almost anybody I know. Not because I see it as the most efficient use of my time, but because I actually really enjoy those moments in person discussing and learning from somebody else. I take more meetings than most people generally, definitely more than Chris, in that I feel like that is where

  26. This is where I'm most comfortable. And it's also where I'm most comfortable with entrepreneurs sitting down and bouncing ideas back and forth and having a discussion about why they think away or why I think away. I get that out through conversations through podcasts. I get that out through video. It's why Chris and I were so early and aggressive in the video broadcasting ecosystem, why we do things like blabs and periscopes and mere cats and Facebook video. I think that's just where we thrive. That's kind of how I built it. And also by just being a natural curious, I find myself in early communities really, really often. Product hunt is a huge supporter of like you and sort of it's an ecosystem that I love. And it turned out to be a really important one for early stage venture because that's where you find a bunch of really interesting companies and that's where you launch a bunch of interesting companies. It's less about concerted brand building but being a part of those communities early.

  27. You know, it's interesting I've struggled with. And I think a lot of people who come into an existing brand with a personality that sort of looms larger than life having built it. I mean, lowercase is Chris. Chris has built this over the better part of year. He is incredible at it. He's an amazing storyteller. And he's a great personality to rally around. And so, and combine that with at eight years in CAA, you're not trained to build your own brand. And so I think Chris has challenged me over the last few years to really get out there more. He repeatedly tries to get me to go out and blog. I've done it a few times. It's not my natural state. If you want the truth of it, the categories that I feel like I can express my own personality. So that's more important to me than brand building is like letting people know the person that I am. I think moments like this are frankly the best version for me. I met Chris in a conversation in a jam session where we're both going back and forth, having a discussion.

  28. Responsiveness through email, all of those things enable you to do this job really, really well from anywhere. And so we seem to thus far have not suffered from being outside of the echo chamber. I think it's a competitive advantage for us as well, just because I think building up the LA ecosystem is something I'm really passionate about, but it also is a little bit of a different flair, a different part of our pitch to the entrepreneurs that we back, whether they're in SF or in New York or Chattanooga, Tennessee.

2016-03-14 · The Twenty Minute VC · 20VC: Lowercase's Matt Mazzeo on Being Chris Sacca's Partner and The 3 KPIs to Successful Investing · IDENTIFIED FROM THE TRANSCRIPT · source

  29. Yeah. Yeah, we were fortunate enough. We do a couple things. So one, I think being outside of the echo chamber is the vingge. Chris has talked about this a lot. The reason why he moved out of SF to Trukey years ago, I mean, Chris hasn't been in San Francisco for the better part of a decade, largely because he wanted to be more focused with his time and be more on the offense in terms of how he used his time. I think we benefit from being in LA by that same token. We don't have to be caught up in every single cocktail party, every single event. That sort of momentum can be overwhelming when you're in an ecosystem and it's really easy to conflate work and those events. At the same time, we're close enough that I'm in San Francisco two days a week and on a moment's notice we'll fly up and meet with an entrepreneur if timing necessitates it. And combine that with video conferencing and phone, I think you really can build both a company and a venture firm anywhere as long as you put in the time and work, whether through travel, conferences, phone.

  30. in business and having more access and exposure to those people before you have to make snap decision as part of a few week fundraising and a day-long partner meeting. I think that world is going the way of the dodo and rightfully so.

  31. Sit behind that address and hope that the world will come to you. I think there's a lot of de-risking that happens in venture capital on both sides, both when you make an investment and when you take an investment. And part of the de-risking for an entrepreneur taking investment is they want to know who they're getting in business with. They want to know how they'll react. They'll want to have information. I think one of the fantastic things about YC and Wippa Paul and Sam have built is that they expose entrepreneurs some more information than ever before. That's not just the deal-making terms. That's background on the investors that are getting into business with. It's not a quiet secret that they share those notes back and forth of good investors that they're companies have worked with. The downside of it is sort of like this sort of celebrity connotation because that can lead to a bunch of terrible outcomes. The flip side of it is the transparency and understanding the people that you might take money from and getting to a seven to ten to 15 year relationship with.

  32. Yeah, I think we've seen a few sort of themes coalesce all the same time. One of those themes is everybody is more accessible today. Everybody is the social networks have been built around human beings, not necessarily around brands. And so for human being to build a brand is far easier than ever before. And actually, these networks give sort of preferential treatment to the person. And so I don't think the VC of today can hang behind Sandhill Road address anymore and pretend like that brand will become or maintain its supremacy in this ecosystem. I think you have to more and more expose yourself to the world and be covered as a person who has individual thoughts, individual opinions, and be willing to sort of express those and build your own following, be interactive in all of those communications. I don't think we are in a world where like you can just

  36. I think he meant a few things. I think one of his fears in bringing me on was that would I be too corporate in my thought process and be able to sort of go out there? I mean, part of the CAA ecosystem is that you are really the person, you are never in the spotlight. You're not the one speaking. You're not the one taking credit for anything. You're not the one brand building yourself. Everything, all of your effort is in service to the client and building their brand and building them. And so the agents are generally the people behind the scenes. Increasingly, I think we're seeing, we've been talking a little bit about this, Harry, like that shift in venture towards being more of a personality and expressing yourself and not being a Wilton, sort of going out there and being more front and center in your conversation, in your opinion, in your thought leadership. And I think that's part of what he was saying.

  37. For years, I mean, like for eight years, Chris and I became closer and closer friends and kept sort of running across each other. So he did more stuff in media and entertainment, and I started building out a tech practice in CAA. Our paths just naturally crossed over and over. And a couple times over the course of that period, he suggested that maybe I look into taking a job at one of his portfolio companies. And I was just having probably the best time I could in that period of work at CAA. And so I had no interest in never leaving. The plan was to die in a suit at that place. I loved it. I loved the clients. I loved the agents. I loved some of my best friends in the world are still people that I've made while growing up at CIA. Best mentorship. And yet over time, he and I became closer and closer. And then eventually he asked me to join.

And I think that back and forth built a really healthy foundation for how we interact today as partners. And so I'm not sure it's anything particularly earth-shattering that I shared in that room. And that's saying something because I'm a pretty loud kid for anybody that knows me. And I think I was just, at this moment in time, a little bit naive about who was in the room. So it was people like Chris Saka and Dave Morin and Matt Van Horn and Aaron Battalion and Travis Lannock and Garrett Camp and people who now, I think I would have been intimidated in that moment in time, but I was totally unintimidated largely by my own ignorance of who they were. And I just sort of unleashed all of my theses at the same time. And so Chris and I ended up on the opposite side of arguments time and time again. And a couple times got to a draw in terms of where we believed the world was heading. And other people would chime in and sort of fall in a few of those cases on my side. 40. Yeah, I think this will be almost a decade since FedSouth bite, but I met him at South Byte in a late night jam session put on by a former client at my agency, CAA, Gary Vannerchuk. Gary was at the time a wine lifestyle expert and was sort of using his knowledge of the wine ecosystem to get really interesting people together and start having debates about tech and where the tech ecosystem was heading. And that's where I met Chris in, I think, the Hilton in like a tiny little twin bed suite at the Hilton Hotel talking about the future of tech and drinking far too much wine.
