“One thing did happen in the interview that doesn't happen very often is actually the person sitting opposite you says, yes, I lied. You know, having interviewed politicians for many years They don't ever say that they might say well the facts changed and I'm not sure you know massage massage massage I'm not suggesting that politicians lie all the time but they certainly pick out facts and statistics to help present their case. We did have in that interview several really pretty tense moments where they say, yeah, well, yeah, we lied. We lied to the press. And that's quite something. And I think for a lot of people watching, that'll be what they take. That'll be what they take from it.”

“It's exactly part of what she was saying. She's like, I made. Successful business out of manufacturing for years. This happens. There was a call to arms to use her phrase. And I knew people who could get this sorted really quickly. And that's what I did. And I did it for the right reasons. That is part of her case. I suppose in a wider sense, though, there is a broader question about whether the way the government set up the whole thing allowing politicians to put forward suggestions for people who could help that VIP lane, which they created. What is though, I think, interesting for the government is that one of Michelle Mohone's contentions is that everyone in the government knew, she said everyone in the Department of Health knew everybody in the Cabinet Office knew. Oliver Dowden said this morning that he didn't know, Robert Buckland said this morning that he didn't know there are other ministers though who have been on the record saying the Department of Health did know, but another person who was a minister in the government actually in the Department of Health at the time also texted me after the interview to say they also hadn't known.”

“Well, you can never get inside of anybody's heads completely, right? I think that what also comes across as in the interview is that they felt frustrated that originally they were advised by their teams that they shouldn't say anything publicly. They did, of course, give on the record denials through their advisors. But I think you can see that frustration, particularly from her, who is used to being a very high profile person who, you know, appeared on TV and would do all sorts of speeches and things. I think the feeling of having been silenced, I think they'd felt they'd sort of had enough of that and they did really want to get their version of events out there. What we, of course, can't know, and it's important to say this to newscasters too, we can't know if this is the full version of everything. We asked them and pressed them on the claims that we felt were the right ones to ask about the business, who was linked, what their links were in the longer version of the internet.”

“When you look at the facts of the contract, they've got a contract for £200 million. They did deliver millions of masks. The masks were used. They then later delivered millions of gowns. The gowns were never used. Now, they say very clearly they were delivered according to the specification. They were delivered on time. There was no problem until sometime later when the Department of Health then tried to start clawing money back. We should say very clearly all of this is subject to something that's going through the courts. There's a civil claim against the company, not against them as individuals. And there is a separate National Crime Agency investigation into what they did as a couple. But I think as ever, sometimes when you have a big story, lots of different things are true. So yes, it is true that there were contracts that did supply PPE that was used in the NHS. Yes, it is true that there's another bit of the contract that never did and the government said, well, those things weren't up to scratch. It is also true that they...”

“Individual businesswoman, and since I walked into the House of Lords, it's been a nightmare for my family. So there was a real defiance actually in her tone. I mean, they've obviously been through a lot. I'm not suggesting that people ought to have sympathy, but there are people who've been at the centre of a massive brew haha, you know, being at the centre of negative headlines for a very long time.
