“Yeah, Maury wasn't the best person to ask about that for most of his life. He hadn't been very religious and he didn't think much. Towards the very end, he said, I'm negotiating with the angels to see if I get to be one of them. So he had had some kind of an epiphany. But I do think that we go somewhere. I do think that there is something beyond this world. I had an uncle who had a near-death experience and told me that he rose above his hospital bed as they were operating on him and he saw all his dead relatives waiting for him. And of course he was a sailor to World War II guy and a very grizzled veteran. I said, well, what did you say? And he said, I said, get the hell out of here. I'm not ready for you yet.”

“I didn't know when I brought her to America for her surgery. I thought she'd get operated on and she'd go back. She never went home. She lived with us. And I ended up sitting alongside her as she slowly lost everything, the ability to walk, the ability to move her arms, the ability to talk. And I had done that once with an old man and now I was doing it with a child. And the Super Bowl came and I was going to shoot down in the morning and come back at night just because I wanted to keep my thing intact and wanted to go. And she threw up the night before and I looked at my wife. I said, I can't. And we canceled it and I stayed home with her. And it was one more day with this child who was so precious and who passed away finally after 23 months of battling this terrible brain tumor.”

“I wrote that for the 20th anniversary of it when the publishers asked me to add something. I said, well, okay, what? I said, well, how has the world changed in those 20 years? And I realized how one voice and something done for the right reasons can change the world. Morey did not have to give all those Tuesdays to me. I was one of the least deserving people in his life of his time. But he did. He remembered me and he cared for me and I was a wayward student and he wanted to help me. “Sure I feel well, first of all, there's not a day goes by that somebody doesn't say the name Mori to me in some way. Red Tuesdays with Mori. Love your thing about, here's my Mori. People will take out their wallets and pull out a teacher of some kind, an older person. So the world reminds me. But the same way that the people in your life, your mother, your best teachers, always live in your heart and you hear their warnings when you're about to make a decision. I hear Maury's. My mom used to say the worst thing about getting older is that you watch people that you love go and you don't want to be the last one around. She said, I don't want to be the last one standing. “We also, that was one of the things, one of the Tuesdays, you know, every Tuesday we sort of took a topic because he was a teacher, so he liked that. He liked to have it. He wanted me honestly, Oprah, because I didn't tell him about the book. He wanted me to write a thesis. And I honestly didn't have the heart to say, you do understand I'm not enrolled anywhere. Don't you have to actually be in school to write a thing? When I was a sports writer and just a sports writer, if someone wanted to talk to me in an airport, they, hey, you're going to win the Super Bowl? And I'd say, the Patriots. And I keep going. “Family and children. There was a moment where he said, you know, there will be no experience in your life like having children. None, no matter what else you do, no matter how many friends, it's the fact that someone depends on you totally and needs you and you have to guide them. “I think when you have ALS and you know you're And you will get to where I am, you know, like that. And so no matter what we talked about, marriage, money, youth, whatever, it was always through the eyes of someone who really recognized he was dying. And I think that's what's most precious about Tuesdays with Maury because most of us don't realize we're going to die. You know, we know intellectually we're going to die, but we don't feel it. We don't face it every day. When that day comes, are you prepared to say, Okay, I'm ready because I've lived my life the way I want to live it. And very few people I know, myself included, especially at that point, could answer yes, I'm ready. We'd all say, no, no, no, not yet, not yet. Give me more time.”

“What struck me was he didn't ever really ask me about my accomplishments, which is what everybody was talking about in that point in my life. What are you doing? What are you earning? What's your popular? He never asked me anything like that. He just said, are you happy? Have you found somebody to share your life with? He was so calm, and yet here he was in a wheelchair. He could barely move at that point, and yet he never complained. He talked about how wonderful it was after the Koppel program, all these people were getting in touch with him, how great it was to see me. And when the meeting was over, I said to myself, you're 37 years old, you're perfectly healthy. He's 78 years old and dying. And he seems 10 times more content and at peace with his life than you are. There's something the matter with this.”

“I hid underneath the dashboard, finishing that conversation. It was with ESPN because at that point in my life, work came first and everything else could wait. Even a dying old man, which is a terrible thing to have to look back on in your life and say you did, but I did, and I say it, and I wrote about it because I know there's some people out there if they were in the same situation, they'd be on the floor also finishing.”

“Well, you're giving me too much credit. I made a decision to make a phone call. He made the decision to have me come back and see him because when I was in college, I used to call him coach, you know, sports affectation. I coach whatever I think I had forgotten about that. And when I dialed his number just to have one phone call to ease my conscience, the first thing he said to me was, how come he didn't call me coach? And I felt so bad that, you know, I ended up going to visit him once because guilt is a very powerful motivator. And then one visit turned to another and another and another and all the Tuesday support.”
