“It's so interesting because you know, I have a girls school in South Africa and the year I opened the school was the darkest time for AIDS. Like one out of four people had AIDS in the country at the time and there wasn't a week that went by when someone wasn't called out of class to be told that they had lost a parent. And so so many of my girls come from this sense of abandonment and not understanding why or how because, you know, at the time and even still now, people don't talk about AIDS. It was like shushed and you pretended that the person died of something else. And what's interesting is all those girls who experienced that went through some form of abandonment one way or another. Once a year I go over to teach and I was saying it shows up in different ways. Either you end up being this clingy, clingy, clingy.”

“Grandfather died. I don't mean to minimize that, but I'm saying it might be like they might make such a, you know, Deal about it, so I guess. Those types of girls kind of Bothered my sister and I because we felt like they get to take that off for granted They can need people. I think for me when I was little, it felt embarrassing to be. People have different reactions to losing a parent at a young age. Maybe stay in that childlike state of like, I want my mommy and I'm mad. But what's so interesting about what you're saying to me is that as you continue to process trauma, it's always there. It just means you handle it differently or respond differently.
