  1. If I look at an old Galwing from 1955, can you guarantee backwards compatibility for 50 plus or 70 years? I don't know, man. You just have to put gas in. Yeah, we'll have to figure that out. But one thing I can promise you, you will still have an exciting drive and that might be worth it.

  2. I got you. Well, it can happen again. We have to talk after this podcast. No, so what you're saying is how do we make sure that it doesn't get dated in the digital age? It comes back to what we talked before. You have to look at that software stack as a river, not as a pond, and then you leave the pond. You got to be able to think about backwards compatibility.

  4. So it will be like a gradual shift into that world. It's not like black and white. You flick a switch and you go from all manual to all autonomous. It's step by step. And together now with Nvidia, we're working on our next generation driving assistance autonomous automated drive systems. Those are going to be in the market towards the end of 2024 into 2025. I'm quite excited about what we're doing there.

  5. So I think before every single segment, it's quite expensive technology, especially if you want to go to level three or beyond level three. And as you say, the lines get a little bit blurred there. So once you want to get to some sort of full autonomy, a lot of computing power, a lot of sensing, a lot of back end and so on. So it's maybe not something that you put in a $10,000 car. You can put it in an 80 to $100,000 car in the beginning. before the whole world goes to that i think we're surely deep into the 30s or whatever but i do think that in this decade on the way to 2030 a lot of things will happen we will have level two systems that will feel like level four systems you're still responsible but the car can almost do everything so super assistants we will have more situations where you can drive level three and we will have also more examples of the valet parking level four that i mentioned

  6. Have a timeline right, you have level three, you have level four, the level five is the last level, these levels. The definitions are fuzzy. Do you have a timeline in your head of, okay, the last disruption is most people get in their car steering wheel or no, and they will not operate the car?

  7. And I think that we will have an absolute revolution on these technologies in this decade. And in some of the applications, yes, especially for shared mobility, I can see that steering wheel then also disappear.

  8. If that was us putting a flag on the moon, the first flag on the moon, now we need to build the moon base. And yes, together with Bosch, we have also developed a level four system. You don't even have to be in the car. If you go to the airport in Stuttgart, you can drop your car in a zone. And then in that parking garage with some technology that's actually in the building as well, the car can guide itself without you being in it. So you go and check in and you don't waste the time of looking for a parking spot in the garage. We all know the experience, right? It's just tedious. It's just not fun. If you could just let that be done by a computer, it's better.

  10. So on this journey of driving assistance systems turning into one day fully autonomous vehicles that can go by themselves anywhere, we're in the middle of that journey. It's one of the most exciting journeys. And one of the most disrupting technologies, actually, more disruptive in a way than the switch of the drivetrain because it's going to make traffic so much safer because once the computer knows how to make all those decisions right, it will make those decisions more right than humans and make less mistakes. So we're super excited about this since safety is one of the core values of a Mercedes. And yes, you're right. We have now actually certified the first level three vehicle here in Europe, in Germany. So in some driving situations, you push the button and you take that giant leap of actually handing over the responsibility to the computer.

  11. I want to end on autonomy. We have talked around it a bunch. We have not talked about it. It is the future Mercedes has very advanced driver assistance features in the cars today. Some of the cars, I think one of the claims is they even have level three autonomy when it comes to parking garages where you push the button, it can drive parking garage and park itself. When do you think the steering wheel is going away?

  12. As far as Mercedes is concerned, that luxury will turn itself into zero emissions. So yes, 100% of the volume one day will be electric, you know, 30 plus X, we shall see. And on the road to that, I actually think we have in this Twilight Zone that we will have for many years, maybe we have not 100% cannibalization between EVs and combustion for us. So we actually have a little growth boost through all the electric vehicles that we're adding in parallel. But the end game is whatever the size of the market is in 2030, 2035, 2040, once you get to 100% zero emission, then of course it's completely replacing the previous technology.

  13. So let's start from another point do we believe that individual mobility, the concept of individual freedom, and maybe something that we have been reminded of in these past couple of years of a pandemic, a safe space, a cocoon, your cocoon, where you can feel safe going from A to B. Do we believe that people are going to want to move more in the future than today or less? We believe people are going to want to move more. Do we believe that the premium and luxury segment where you have your own cocoon, your own beautiful, safe cocoon? Do we think that's a concept that people that are buying in that segment will still appreciate or not? We think most definitely people will appreciate that. So we think personal mobility is a growth industry. We think the luxury end of personal mobility is definitely a growth industry.

We think we are the best of both worlds. And you have to be competent in both disciplines if you want to win this game. Not forget how to make a real Mercedes. I mean, that's not irrelevant in the future. All of those little details, they count, you know, how quiet the car is, the ride and drive, how sublime that is, how even if you know nothing about cars, it just feels right and everything kind of comes together, the aesthetics and so on.

If you take a walk around the Mercedes Museum and you go through the decades and you kind of, you see Clark Gable's car, you see the Galwing, you see all these beautiful, really pieces of art, you understand that if you want to make a Mercedes, you have to fulfill both promises. And in the future, an absolute given in a sustainable way, you need to decrease your ecological footprint and ultimately eliminate your ecological footprint. What have we given them over the decades? And in its absolute core, Mercedes is a blend between a tech and a luxury company. We stem from innovation, the original startup. I joke inside the company. We're a startup. We just happen to be 130, 60 years old. So in our DNA, we have this inner unrest for what's next. Always look beyond.

  20. Anytime an industry goes through a transformation or even a disruption, it is not unusual that new players look at that industry and go like, well, I could do that. Usually new entrants, they act as a catalyst to accelerate the transformation. And that's what we're seeing with new entrants, whether it's new entrants from the United States or new entrants in China, by the way. So we are watching the new entrants very carefully. We take them very seriously. competent players there with interesting product. But we don't discount the usual suspect. Why should we? Those are also capable and competent competitors that are in the same kind of transformation race that we're in. But when you do that and you watch the competition and you benchmark the competition, if you try to run in 10 different directions and you try to be somebody that you're not, you're definitely going to lose.

Obviously, they are the elephant in the room whenever we talk about EVs. They have dominant market share with the three. They have dominant mind share because of Elon. Do you think your strategy is taking share away from Tesla for EV's total? Is it growing share? Is it maintaining your share of luxury vehicles with switching the mix? How are you thinking about that?

  24. Points a little bit too early to tell on this specific podcast, but stay tuned. We are an active member of one consortium in Europe that is called Ionity. And Ionity is building along the highway network across all of Europe, a fast charging network. And we just six months ago decided to treble that network. So we're very fast together with three or four other partners doing one, let's call it for the community, but a high quality one for the community. We also speak to the energy companies, many of the energy companies are now rapidly getting into the scene. I'm talking about the shells, the BPs, those type of guys, and also utility companies. So many people have recognized this is a space where money can be made as transportation switches to electric. We have done a lot, but we haven't done enough, and we're going to do more.

  25. Station, wherever, and I actually tested it with my colleague Marcus Schaefer when we drove from Atlanta to Alabama for the opening of that battery plant. He just stopped in the middle of nowhere in Alabama and see, let's see if plug-in charge works. So what does plug and charge mean? You go up to that charging stations, you just plug in, and then you leave. And the whole payment and everything is frictionless. The car recognizes it's this specific charging. It could be anybody from any provider. And that makes the convenient thing maybe even better than if you just have a proprietary charging network because you can go anywhere and everywhere. Having said that is that enough? No. And here I kind of agree with Jim. We need to do more. So yes, we are actively looking at how can we engage and maybe create even more and maybe even specific Mercedes charging.

  26. The experience has to be convenient, intuitive, fast, and it needs to work. Up until now, we have done mainly two things and we will do more. The first thing we did was, and I think we were probably the fastest doing this, we put together the most comprehensive roaming system of every available charging point in the world. I think we have a 750,000 plus charging points that you can access through Mercedes Meat charge. Very few manufacturers, if any manufacturer has the width of that. So almost like, you know, in Europe, from cell phones, you go from country to country and you need to have a roaming agreement. That we did very quickly. So it's a good start, but it's not enough. On top of that, we have developed what we call plug-in charge. So now you get to that charging.

  27. Charger off the side of the highway is not a luxury experience, it's not a luxury experience in a Maki. It's certainly not a luxury experience in EQE. Is that something you're thinking about? Oh, we've got to make that experience as good as the supercharger experience.

  28. Have to take another break, but when we come back, all this talk about EVs and battery range is going to come crashing into Tesla. Before the break, we were talking about EV range and how historically Mercedes has valued making gas cars with a lot of range. You seem to be pushing that philosophy with EVs as well. Most people don't need massive range. On the flip side of it, sometimes you do. So even if you buy the smaller car, maybe sometimes you do want to go on the trip. And that's when the charging network becomes really important. I would say Tesla's main advantage is the supercharger network. We've seen other car companies come to the realization that their charging networks are not up to snuff to compete with Tesla. I just talked to Ford CEO Jim Farley on the site and he said, look, we launched the Mockie and now we're doing the F-150 Lightning. We know we got to get better at charging. They have deployed a team of people to go around checking for bad chargers in the Electrify American Network that they're partnered with. I think about the Mercedes customer rolling up in an EQE to some gas station with a broken.

  29. We did a kind of a fun thing, a science project that we called EQXX, where we challenged the engineers to go a thousand kilometers real life, on one charge. And the restriction that they had, they were not allowed to put a monster battery in. You can always do it with a very big battery. But with a size of battery that we have in serious production today in and around 100 kilowatt hours, and they made it. They drove from south of Stuttgart to south of France, 1,008 kilometers, even at 140 kilometers to spare on one charge in a sedan that could carry four people. Yes, it was a little bit too extreme from an aero point of view and some of those things. But those technologies in that car, some of them are going to be in serious cars from Mercedes already in two to three years. So it's not science fiction, it's not fantasy, it's coming

  30. And there you rather go for a smaller battery, maybe with less expensive technology, and then optimize the variable cost of the product instead. So like in the old world where you had, I don't know, an E200, an E250, an E350 and E450, and it was all about displacement and horsepower. Maybe the new currency is efficiency and range, and you have an entry model for those that need less range, and you have then the ultimate for the people that do take longer trips quite often or go skiing every weekend or whatever they do. So both things we will work on, but there is a common denominator, and the common denominator is efficiency. Efficiency is the new currency. So next to perfecting the drivetrain, we look at every aspect of the car, the aerodynamics, the rolling resistance, all the other users on the car. I don't know if you caught them.

  31. Fast charging available. I think many customers are going to realize, and my wife is one of them, by the way, you don't need that range. 99% of your trips are below 100 kilometers anyway. If it's not the commuter car going from, I don't know, New York City to LA every other week, you're going to be fine with a range that is somewhere between $200 and 300 miles, maybe, or even perhaps even less than that.

  32. So, quite excited about that. Everybody talks about solid state. There are different horses in the race for solid state. When that comes to fruition, it's another opportunity. It's not yet in automotive grade industrial volumes that could very possibly happen sometime between 2025 and 2030. So yes, those things will lead to even higher ranges, although I have to say with the EQS sedan, if I use the European standard, WLTP, certification value up to 780 kilometers, maybe in real life driving somewhere north of 600 kilometers, it almost takes care of all use cases. So very few times do you really run out of juice if you have one of those cars. But we will go beyond that. Then as charging infrastructure proliferates and we will have it in more places and more public.

  33. Yes, I do, but I think maybe we'll have a market development from a consumer demand point of view that goes in two directions. I definitely see batteries coming with higher energy density. And even in the lithium iron technologies that we're in now that gets better and better, there is still some leg room for energy density improvement there. And then you have some of the more game-changing technologies that are in the pipeline but are not yet ready for industrialization. One is the Silicon-Based Anode, or almost all silicon anode, where we work together with American startup company called CELA. And we just actually recently announced that we will put in the electric G the first application of CELA technology into a version of the G, and that should improve the energy density by at least 20%, maybe even 30%.

You mentioned a large battery in the forthcoming G-Wagon. When I think about Mercedes as a whole, right, you historically have made a lot of grand tours, large sedans, large SUVs that are meant to go long distances. That is still the issue with EVs. Broadly, range anxieties I think people care about. Talk to me on the first on the battery side. Let's talk about the charging side. On the battery side, do you see developments coming that allow you to get to the longer ranges beyond this sort of 300 miles everybody sees now?

  35. And it will have a drivetrain that will blow your mind. You can literally on a soft surface, you can turn on a dime. You can have two wheels going forward and two wheels going backward. So we call it the G turn. So on a dime, it just turns itself 180 degrees and you can go in the other direction. So the drivetrain is crazy good. Together with my boss, Bernd Pischetzrida, we took it for a spin in the fall when we were meeting the G-Guys where this vehicle is being developed in Austria. And we went on to the dedicated, very harsh test track that they have there. And Bernd has been in the auto industry for 40 years plus he has seen everything. And we kind of stepped out of the car and we go like, wow, from this point forward, going off-road is electric. So yes, absolutely, G is going electric.

You know, everybody wants one. The waiting time is really long. You have to apply. You're not sure you're going to get one. Maybe even the most desirable car in our portfolio. But jokes aside, we will put a sizable battery into it. subtle changes on the aerodynamic side that will not destroy the iconic shape, at least improve it from where it sits today.

I spent two different times, a total of six years in Alabama. So I love it down there. I have great friends there. We have put a billion dollar plus into that operation to get it EV ready. I was there in March opening our brand new battery plant that will serve the main assembly plant in Alabama. The EQS SUV startup production has already started. When I talk to other Carcios that you've described them as the volume brands, which is great, when I talk to the CEOs of volume car brands at the lower end of the market, they are feeling the pressure of gas prices make people want hybrids and EVs in the demand is moving because you can justify a new car purchase if you're going to spend less on gas when gas is over $5 a gallon. Are you just saying the Mercedes market segment is less responsive to that kind of pricing pressure?

Will gradually tilt that scale and some regulators and politicians around the world will want to tilt that scale in favor of fossil-free energy source as in electricity produced by non-fossil-based power plants. So maybe it's not their number one criteria, but you're right, as the price of fossil increases and maybe also CO2 pricing to take into account the side effects of burning fossil gets put onto the original cost of fossil energy. Yes, the TCO equation shifts more and more towards clean and less expensive electricity. So yes, throughout this decade, I believe that we
