  1. I think magical things happen when you say hello and when two people connect. And I think technology and social networks in the future should enable us

  2. Connect and connecting is three easy sometimes and sometimes it's extremely hard. And I think we can use the technology we have to make it a lot easier to connect and relate.

  6. If you're in a situation It's like entrepreneurships and launching new products, they always tell you you should not over engineer, over scale architect at any should launch when you're ready. And we thought you were ready, but we weren't expecting so much traffic and demand. And it's kind of scary going to India because it has a mobile user base that's 10 times as much. So you want to make sure that we get it right. So, I guess I learned from my mistake by not building it on a Windows platform, but oh my god,

  7. We didn't expect to get so much fan base right away. And we even got published on the App Store. The same day when we launched And as a result, our servers fell over for two weeks. We were like busy trying to fix our infrastructure architecture issues. And luckily, it took us only two weeks with Orcut.com, it took us an entire year.

  8. Kind of funny you ask that question because I feel like I repeated the same mistake twice. And I think when you fail, you don't fail as long as you learn from your mistakes. But with Orcid.com, something interesting happened where... Our estimates for growth were not correct, and we got so much demand right away as soon as we launched. And with Brazil, we had all of forecasts and anticipation about how fast we would grow But we were wrong with our estimates. And as soon as we launched in Brazil, We explored and we didn't even have any PR. It was a quiet launch. And what happened was just with word of mouth.

  10. It's a problem on every network, and it's important to have the necessary tools in order to fight spam and abuse. As I mentioned earlier, it's not a solution that can scale with support, so you want to count on your community to moderate and help with policing of the content.

  11. Online networks reflect and mirror just real life networks. And if you look at society, there are good people and bad people. I'm with any social network or platform out there, you're going to get users who are going to harass and abuse and spam the ecosystem. And there's a much bigger problem in networks where you have anonymity. And with apps like or services like Facebook or Hello, that's like harder to do because people, when they create a comp, that's actually who they are. And you can also validate people by looking at their friend network.

  12. But not so much stickers. It is true. It's much bigger there. And then Leslie, let's talk a little bit about the idea of harassment, because one of the things that you didn't really have to deal with at ORCID at the beginning was this idea of people creating these cesspools, creating, we recently had the CEO of Reddit on. Obviously, they have big issues around that. Facebook now with this fake news and bullying has issues, and obviously Twitter is plagued by it. How do you look at that phenomena? And what do you do about it? What would you do? What do you think, obviously, I don't think that would happen on your platform because people are talking about food or travel or whatever they're interested in. It doesn't seem like a place where people will start arguing with each other

  13. China is interesting because they are early adopters. It has a huge massive market and it has tons of devices that are all connected. And people love to share, and the types of things that they share and the way they use social media apps is actually very different than we do here. Some features that might be popular in China would get no adoptions, for instance, stickers. Like stickers are really popular in communication messaging apps. But if you look at the US market base, the consumers don't care about stickers.

  15. I see Snapchat more like a communication platform. That's how teenagers communicate, right? If you're in a movie line getting tickets, you get the Snapchat of the person in front of you and you start snapping with them. And the most common use case is communicating with.

  16. Okay. So when you look at something like Snapchat, how do you see that trend coming in? Because that's a more controlled trend. There's more, they pick and choose who's on it from a media perspective. It creates a more controlled environment for its users and something where they can express themselves between and among themselves.

  18. Twitter is interesting. With Twitter, I always see two types of people who like to post on Twitter. One is the Mimi Me type of person who is constantly posting about themselves And then you have the people that share what's out there and popular or trending at the moment. And it has a really interesting topology where your feet consists of people you are following. Which most of the time are not necessarily our friends or people, you know.

  22. Why don't technology companies want to do this? There's two things they don't want to do. One is rely on humans. The second is take responsibility for the problems it creates. They like to say they're a platform, that they're not an editorial platform, they're not a media company, and yet they are indeed a media. It is a media company of a different sort. I think it is.

  23. I think the best solutions include a combination of machine algorithms and humans. And it's always good to have humans in place that double check things that bubble up to the surface before they get a prorogated to a massive audience.

  24. Right, right, which Facebook just removed those from the system there because they got pushback from conservatives that it shouldn't be done by hand, which many people think is wrong. It should be done by hand because they can pull out fake news a lot quicker than the algorithm can or the technology can. So what do you do about something like that where fake news? Because it creates a cesspool effect, I think, in lots of these social networks.

  25. There is so much happening on the technology side that we lose the human aspect of it. So, for instance, you would get a feed created out of news items and you don't actually know how those items got there because it's an algorithm or a program that generates that feed, not actual humans curating it

  26. With all social networks, if you arrive at a large scale, spam APUs becomes a big problem. And one of the things you do is you start to fight it back with not a big custom support base, but with intelligent algorithms and machine learning and AI to figure out what's real, what's not. And with social media, a lot of times things are almost over-engineered.

  29. And then our next goal is to move to India, which It's even like a larger community. If you look at Brazil, they have, let's say, 30 million mobile users. If you go to India, the number goes up to 400 million. And it's really important to be able to test the product, also like the technology infrastructure architecture with larger and larger communities.

  30. There are a couple of other reasons we were able to iterate quite a bit on the app before we went to a larger market. And we had around 5,000 users in closed beta. They were able to iterate in a lot of feedback from our user base. And then the next big step is a larger community. And we thought Brazil was a great market because of their history of social network usage and patterns. They are early adopters, they are super friendly, they like trying out new products and they are hyper-connected. We launched in Brazil, and that way we were able to test the system much larger scale and also get a lot of very useful feedback and it trade on it.

  32. Look at our community very closely. We look at quantitative feedback. And when we talk to our users, when we ask them what you think about Hello, There are like three things they tell that's very interesting. One thing is they say it's a happy place. Which is very unusual. A lot of social apps when you go there, it doesn't make you happy. Increasing anxiety. They say they have a lot of fun with it. We put a lot of emphasis on human focus design. Some people call it gamification. We have a lot of elements that you see in traditional video gaming that makes the experience a lot more fun and engaging. And our users also say that they actually meet people who share the same things or passions that they have.

So you can pick like techie, yogolover, foodie, dog lover. And then we customize entire experience around it. So you get to meet people or interact with people who are also into the same things as you are. And we also reflect a lot of real life interactions and bake it into hello. For instance, a lot of times when you see a stranger, you have a very simple gesture like a wink or a smile. And we are able to replicate that on Hello with a micro emoti videos we call expressions.

And then the next big wave of social networks actually expose that friends list, the friend graph, where you could look at anyone and they would have a profile and you would also see who they're connected to. And if you look at all the social apps out there, they have the same two basic features that make them viable. One is a profile, like the identity of the person. In some cases, it can be anonymous. And the second one is the topology, which could be the following model, friend model, or a combination of both.
