“I'm a I'm a fifty year old woman these attitudes are not news to me Nick you know I think most women have had that said about them at some point in their careers there is a famous statistic that when there is a meeting to encourage people to run for office the average time it takes for a man to put in their CV from the preliminary meeting is about a week for a woman it's it's over a year and I think we tend to think about all the things that we need to do and improve and generally it is a generalization women prepare really well for what they're about to do coronation sword holding included”

“Look, I think you have to think why you're motivated to do particular things. I would not have put myself forward for that role if I were not prepared to do it and have wanted to do it. But I also think you need to recognise what it is that you're bringing to that role, what it is you're trying to achieve. And I think if you have the people who are happiest in politics, whatever level they're serving at, are people that have a clear view about What they want to achieve and why they're doing it.”

“Look I think you know you can think about these things, you can speculate about all these things. My view in politics is you will have opportunities, you have to make the most of those opportunities, you have to do your best. You have to make sure you're doing things for the right reasons and you've got to stick to your principles and your guns on things. And if you're not successful, you move on and you make use of the next opportunity. When I got in in 2010, that wasn't the first time I'd run in my seat. And I served in Liz Truss' government. I'm serving in Rishi Sunak's government. I hope if you were to ask them that they would both say they feel really supported by me.”

“Well, I think poor Liz, I think she's obviously been through a pretty awful time. But my thoughts that have always been with the country and pulling them through what was an incredibly turbulent time”

“So it's not awkward. People have different views. Members of my family have different views. And that's democracy. And there will be people that say that that makes us weak as a society, you know, that Brexit being another issue of great division. It doesn't. These things make us strong.”

“But this is, you know, we're talking about people's rights in law, not biology. That's the difference. And I've been very clear on that. And I think actually that's where the bulk of the public are. There's no incompatibility with colleagues and others and members of the public between looking out for somebody and being upset if a particular group of people are being vilified or misrepresented in our community. And my rights as a woman to privacy and dignity and fairness in things like sport and all of those other issues.”

“So I think people will conflate all sorts of things. So my own views have always been very clear on this. And in fact, they were very clear throughout the whole leadership contest. I see no incompatibility with being kind and understanding and protecting the ability for trans people to go around and live their lives with protecting my rights as a woman to privacy and dignity and all of that. A lot of these things I think are a confected situation.”

“I think part of our role is to bring people together. We are more effective as a nation or as a community when we're taking care of each other, when we're pulling together, and when we're protecting each other's rights. That's what makes us a great nation. And when we're at our best is when we're living those values and we're inspiring others to follow those values. And so I think the world is a dangerous and an uncertain place and we've got enough things to worry about than starting spats on Twitter and so forth. When the public have been left to get on with these things themselves, they develop solutions, they develop norms, and actually most people in this country care about other people and their ability to lead their lives. So that's always the view I've taken. And I think that's one reason why I'm in politics.”

“Well, drawing you back to where we started, you know, we've just had a weekend where we remembered what we all have in common. You know, we have these incredible moments in our history where we come together, where we're either standing against something, you know, it's why I think they make so many films about wartime effort and we're all pulling together. I think you can have choices to make in politics. The choice I choose to make is to remind us all what we have in common. I'm here for all of my constituents. I listen to all their views. I have views myself and I always way up and make a judgment on votes I'm having or policies I want to put forward. But that's what we're here to do in my view. Is it possible to do that?”

“Look, I think that is the case. I have apologized for it previously. The world we live in now moves at an incredibly fast pace. It's incredibly complicated. We've got all kinds of emerging threats that people don't know how to deal with. And people want things that they can rely on and depend upon. And I think that the Prime Minister really does recognize that. And when he was setting out at the beginning of the year, his priorities that he's focusing on, he also spoke about restoring that trust. And I know that's what he wants me to do in this role.”

“Absolutely. We mentioned the BBC, we mention a whole variety of scandals that have happened. And so it was really wanting to get underneath why these things were happening. But I think there are, as well as leadership and people's behavior, it's also about the effectiveness of those institutions. I would say, you know, when people come into my surgery and they've ordered something online that's going to arrive that afternoon and I tell them that the thing they care about is going to take four years, well, you start to lose trust in things that aren't delivering for you, which is why in the role I have now, I'm interested in how we move at the speed that business and science in particular needs us to in Parliament, how we modernise our statute book and how we regulate and how we get MPs to be as effective as they can possibly be.”

“Look, I think there's a whole raft of reasons why, and actually in the book I wrote which in part looked at modernising, I mean looked at modernising every aspect of our life, but it did focus on Parliament. I think there are a whole variety of reasons why people lose faith in those institutions. And I set out what I call the sort of timeline of trust decay, which the whole series of scandals, which when you write them all down, is incredible. So it's partly it's about...”

“Well, I think that was the easy part. There were two parts. I fully recognise why people focus on that one part. But I also had to get all of the officers' names into the speech as well, which is actually the thing that was the most difficult. But no, I survived that, and I'm still, I got re-elected.”

“They had no idea who this woman was who kept rocking up every week. And I knew what they thought. I knew what mattered to them. And again, it's about being prepared if you want to do something and you're trying to achieve something. Do everything you can to make that happen. So that was always been my approach.”

“Yes. So, well, I wanted the seat of Portsmouth. It was where I was brought up. It's the most amazing place to represent. You know, we do, people know it for the Navy and it's legendary football club, but we make all kinds of amazing things there. It's an incredible tight-knit community. And I really wanted to, I wanted to be an MP, but I really wanted to be their MP. For about a year preceding the selection meeting, or when I thought the selection meeting was going to be, I went to every single council meeting. And I didn't sit in the usual public gallery. I deliberately sat opposite the Conservative councillors. I always wear tender dark clothes, but I was like in banana yellow or, you know, I was going to be noticed. And so when I went into the selection meeting a year later, they all knew.”

“There is, but I think what you're trying to do is form a connection with people. You can write a beautiful speech and write a beautiful script, but unless it moves people, unless it conveys to them not just an argument you want them to understand, but the fact that they feel understood, that's what you're there to do. And why that's important, it's not about getting someone to vote for you. It's about getting someone to have confidence that a particular course of action is going to be good for them, that you've got their back.”

“You know how to do terror. I have to say, once you know how a lot of these things are done, you can never ever watch a magic show and enjoy it again You can just work out how they've done it. It's terrible. I would not want you to have that experience.”

“No, I mean, so yeah, my Friday and Saturday nights I wasn't at a school discovery, being sworn in half. Will Ailing, who was the magician, was a very famous illusionist and his signature trick was I was sawn into three pieces and then put back together again. But it was great. And in fact, when I first went to party conference, which at the time was in Bournemouth, I knew all the hotels because I'd been sawn in half in all over the course of a few years.”

“Yes, and I mean, we have a one of my brothers was my twin. We got a younger brother as well. But we were running the household. My father had a lot on his plate. He had to work very hard to keep things going. And so we did all the cooking and the laundry and kept the house going. I mean, I don't want to, you know, sort of get the violins out because actually this happens to a lot of people. But what it does, again, teach you, it's about resilience. It's about taking care of people. And I think those experiences, although they were tough at the time, they helped me every day. They helped me when I see people in my surgery who are going through similar things, who are exhausted, who are stressed out about things, who need support and encouragement. And it's helped me be empathetic, I think, to people in those circumstances.”

“No it wasn't austere at all. I mean my parents were absolutely wonderful. We grew up in a house full of lava and laughter and we had structure. “Yes, it's part of your you've got to demonstrate you can do that to progress Yes, which I found very difficult at my when I went to I went as a rating but then I went to officer training and I was forever having to retake the pool test where you have to swim and then you have to haul yourself out of a pool but there is quite a distance between the water surface and the surface you've got to go onto and you need a lot of upper body strength to do it.”

“Yes, absolutely both. I mean you I have to say that the training you receive in my experience in the Navy but actually in any service is second to none and it is about service it's about enduring horrible things sometimes it's about thinking of others putting other people before yourself all of those things and keeping your morale up and others morale up while you're going about it And of course, my drill training on Whale Island in Portsmouth certainly helped keep my circulation going on the day. I kept wiggling my toes and all the little things that you know to keep you going.”

“Yes, yes. It is It is an incredible moment, and you're very conscious that how well you do it in that role is going to have an impact on an enormous number of people, not just in our country but around the world who were grieving, who felt even if they did not know her personally, that they knew her, and that she was almost part of their family. I said in my tribute to her that she felt like part of our family because she had shared her family with us. And that immense constant that had been in most people's lives for as long as they could remember was gone.”

“Yes, so I'm the chair of the King's Privy Council, which back in the day used to be the executive for the king. It still meets and carries out business. We never televise a privy council, but the closest people would have seen is the accession council, which was another duty that I performed in this role.”

“Well, I'm not sure that was quite the look I was going for, but I wanted to, what my predecessor would have worn is the formal court dress of the Privy Council, which is black, which was not really permitted to be worn at the coronation, and it was very old fashioned. I had the sense of what kind of coronation the Earl Marshall was trying to create. And it was a modern one, but with those historic references so I thought, I'm going to wear a modern day dress, the dress and the hat you can go online and anyone can buy those designs and be embroidery on it was the nod to the past. So I found out who did the embroidery of the Privy Council uniforms and I said, could you feminize the motif and put it on this dress? And they did. Company called Hand and Lock, they did an amazing job. And yeah, the rest is now history.”

“I think it's practice like anything that you're preparing for. Don't leave anything to chance. Have a good breakfast. We're comfortable shoes. I had a great team with me because the chaps who haven't got any plaudits at all are the former defence chiefs who are standing behind me with the other swords in the ceremony. We were all there supporting each other and we'd obviously been talking under our breath at each other during rehearsals, keeping each other going. I have to say that compared to police officers I met who'd been on shift for 13 hours in St. James's Park on their feet, 51 minutes with the sword estate was not too bad. So I think it's nice to be recognized, but I think I was a bit of a metaphor for everyone on the day who was all, we were all doing our bit and everyone did it really well.”

“No, I think you want to make sure you're in good Nick. And I did take a couple of painkillers beforehand just to make sure I was going to be all right. But it's fine. It's all good. And we got through it. And it's only half the ceremony I had to carry the sword of state, which is a really heavy one. And then I traded it in for the very exquisite jewelled sword of offering. It was much lighter.”

“Was never going to happen, Nick. That was never going to happen. No, I was all right. If there was a highly emotional time, it was the Thursday where we ran through it twice with lots of standing around in between. And at the end of that, I was quite tired. But having done that, I knew I could do the service. And I knew what everyone else was doing. And we were all there as a team making sure everything went according to plan. So it was great. And I was able to enjoy it and just be part of it and sing my heart out on the way out as well.”

“Might have gone wrong. Do you know the rehearsals were fascinating because it wasn't just this is what we're going to do folks? It was about what was the right thing to do. So you were surrounded by people that had studied this and studied every previous coronation, every historical fact they could find. And so you'd be having conversations about a bit of business that was going on. Did they do this in 53? And I think you'll find that they opted to do this.”

But I was just very glad to get through it and that it all went according to plan. You rehearse and rehearse, you know, all the things that can go wrong. And I also wanted the king to be in the right moment and for him to really be still and centered and have the spiritual experience which he should have in that moment. So it was just a great relief. And then afterwards I was reunited with my phone and found that I'd become a meme. Which was”
