“This has been a blast. Thank you so much for having me. Couldn't tell. We so enjoyed having Roseanne on the show there, and you can follow her on Twitter at I'm the Music. You can follow me on Snapchat at H stebbings with Tubes. It'd be fantastic to see you there. And again, I'd love to say a big thank you to Roseanne for giving up the time today to come on the show and an even bigger hand to Jenny Lefkall at Freestyle and to Leila Sturdy at Capital G for the introduction today, without which this episode would not have been possible. But before we leave you today, do not forget that very few pieces of software are a must for the majority of VCs that I have on the show. But e-shares most certainly is. ESAS is the number one cap table management platform allowing for equity management, 409 A valuations and liquidity all in one place. And eShares is made for companies of all sizes with over 5,000 trusted customers, including the likes of Squarespace, Kickstarter and DoorDash, just to name a few. “Again, it goes back to product market fit, right? They've created this product that people, the customers really love and really value. It's created also this amazing opportunity for the instructors themselves to share their craft and to do a lot of brand and legacy building. And also, it goes back to this idea that here a master can actually teach a student. And so, you know, if you want to be an actor or if you like me love to cook, you can actually get this really intimate knowledge and storytelling from”

“I know I love school. But I feel like so if you think about the modern education system, it was all made to basically scale learning. If you go back way back in time, all learning was done through apprenticeship, right? Some master would teach a couple of students either an apprentice or their child, and that's how knowledge was passed. And that's extremely inefficient and extremely non-scalable. And so we came up with schools and universities and all these journals and academia and all these wonderful things to disseminate learning and disseminate information. But now we have the internet and we had it for a while now, but now the internet exists. And I think a lot of early attempts at online education are taking universities and schools and academia and putting them online. But really the beauty of the internet is that we can actually go back to first principles and think about how does learning actually get passed down and it goes from, you know, it really is one to one, whether that's from a master to an apprentice or from a teacher to many students, right? Or to a student who's one of many, right? But so I love this company because they've created this product.”

“So, my most recent announced investment is a company called Masterclass, which is an online education platform where it's video classes that are taught by the master. So it's comedy from Steve Martin, cooking from Gordon Ramsey, acting from Dustin Hoffman and Kevin Spacey, tennis from Serena Williams, right? Just the best in their field. And I've known David Rogier, the CEO for a long time. I think he's incredible. And what I get so excited about this is I love, like, I'm so passionate about education, right? I have about 10 years of post-secondary education under my belt. I love school and I love to learn.”

“Yeah, so I'm part of NextGen Partners, which is a pre GP professional group. We do a bunch of career development and events that I run our newsletter, which is basically a job board. So I see a lot of this. My biggest piece of advice is attention to detail. I cannot tell you how many jobs I post that people then apply to me or they just completely don't read the instructions and send something that's completely irrelevant. So I think if you actually want a job in venture, attention to detail is maybe the most important part of your job because so much of this is so much of an investment judgment and is based on nuance and based on really knowing the numbers. And if you just can't apply to the job correctly, don't even try. So please.”

“Oh, I mean, I think what's so exciting about being a BI company today is just the fact of how good and fast and standardized the infrastructure is underneath, right, with these cloud services that really have these amazing fast analytic databases and that you can put kind of interesting things on top. I think that just this idea that you can be infinitely scalable is incredible. And I love that you get that push from the bottom. And then I think the pull from the top that you get is that a consumer's kind of expect and demand a really personalized experience and B, data analysts at any company can really get this deep view, a deep kind of longitudinal view of their user or their consumer because we have such great, everybody's like using everything through a phone. And so that's you can really track one user and everything about them over a very long period of time. So I think we're just kind of at this amazing intersection of really high quality performant infrastructure.”

“So I read either Dorky Science books or kind of trashy almost chicklet. And I would say on the Dorky Science side, there's this book that I read years ago that I keep going back to called EinScience Refrigerator. There's another book called That That That That That That That's Not Good, but this one is written by, I think he's Italian. But basically it's a book about physics where everything is in the view of temperature and it basically informs the whole way that I think about the world. And then I also like to read books about like traveling and cooking. I really like to cook. Again, the chemistry. Yeah, my life in France. I've read like five times whenever I need to think about something other than venture capital and technology.”

“Best picker, and I definitely have spent a lot of time with companies that I end up not investing with and are not investing in, and that's too bad. But I think that the only way that you can compete in this really competitive market is by being there before it's competitive. And, you know, showing companies that you think that they're interesting and trying to be helpful before a process actually starts.”

“Well, first of all, thank you, Jenny. My biggest fan, and I'm very grateful. You know, I think I'm a little bit different than the average late stage investor in that kind of come from the product side. And I was an early stage investor, and I really love investing at the growth stage. But I like to wear my kind of company person and my early stage hats when I'm thinking about when I first start spending time with companies. I have been involved in a couple of, you know, pretty competitive deals, which is pretty exciting. Honestly, for the most part, I'm spending time with companies 18 months before we want to invest in them. I think a couple of the deals that she's mentioning are, you know, entrepreneurs or executives that I've known for a really long time and spent a lot of time with before there was a transaction. I think that the way that deals work is, you know, a company decides they're going to raise money and everybody piles in and bids start happening. But I think if that's when you're first getting in front of the company, it's just too late, right? I think it's hard to compete against somebody who's been working with the company or talking at least with the company for months. And it's a hard, like, I would say it's a really hard strategy because I'm not.”

“There was that the panda update, probably what 10, 12 years ago, that killed everybody's SEO, right? But young companies will do this go-to-market, they'll find a platform that works really well, and then that platform changes the rules and they can't get through anymore. And I think we've seen that, we also see that today with just how large and powerful the platforms are. I think we're seeing it right now with Instagram. I probably see it more than a lot of ECs because I'm, you know, I'm a younger woman. I'm like in this demo where every direct-to-consumer brand is marketing to me on Instagram and I've just noticed how fast how many more brands I see every day. And I can only imagine how much more expensive that's getting for those companies. So yeah, I agree that I think it's much harder to break out, but we still have companies that can break out. For instance, right, like Snap broke out beside the fact that the app store is really difficult to get through. There's what, two and a half million apps, it's really hard to break through the noise. They never bought Facebook ads or like Facebook app installs to get there. But instead, they had this really viral product and a proprietary.”

“I mean, I completely agree. I think that the incumbents are so powerful, A, and B so good that it's really difficult to break out. I mean, if you think about mobile, you think about the app store, it's really this walled garden closed ecosystem and the app store itself is basically Yahoo, right? It's a directory. It's not even, right? There isn't even Google yet for mobile, which is kind of crazy. And then if you think about that, like Facebook really capitalized on that opportunity and created this mobile app install ecosystem due to deficiencies in what Apple sent out to the market. They built a giant business through that, but it's really expensive to get through either of those channels today. However, I think that this is also like a tale as old as time. You know, I mentioned like I had a made slocky Facebook apps back in the day and then Facebook shut us down because they own the channel. And I think we've been seeing this for a long time that young companies can find a marketing channel that's dependent on a platform. That platform changes the rules. I mean, I remember Google and”

“You know, in a lot of different ways. So I think for enterprise companies, I think a lot about Looker. I think Looker is a company that has great product market fit, and they've really built this incredible word of mouth channel. I don't know a venture-backed startup that doesn't use Looker for analytics because everybody knows that that's one of the first things that you buy. It's best to breed. It'll just work, right? You put your data into Redshift, you put Looker on top of it. You're off to the races. I think in beauty, for instance, we're seeing a ton of MLM companies that are doing really well, companies like Beauty Counter. I think with beauty companies, what we're seeing a lot of are people leveraging a peer-to-peer channel in more modern ways. For instance, Glossier does that with their rep program. And we also see kind of more traditional beauty companies like Beauty Counterique doing that through more traditional MLM because they can create a channel that's much more scalable because they're not beholden to a single platform.”

“Completely. It's funny, you know, at the early stage, people will really focus because, as I mentioned earlier, having some technical or deep market expertise can help differentiate when there's not a lot of data about a company. And at the late stage, we kind of get to be more generalists. And it's funny to be a generalist, the best enterprise companies and the best consumer companies really look quite similar underneath the covers. And, you know, I think one is this idea of product market fit. There is a phenomenal product that's positioned and priced properly that consumers of that product, whether they are a company or a person, love. And the second lever that I think is really important are the ability to develop organic channels. And, you know, I think that whatever you're selling like a beauty product or whether you're selling enterprise software, having way to get your product into the hands of consumers that you own, that's proprietary to you and that's relatively inexpensive to kind of the market rate is how you can actually scale unfairly against your competitors. And I think about that.”

“I think for us, or for me at least, it's when you see, when the metrics, when you see that the metrics have been repeatable and that they're starting to improve, and that sounds really generic, but kind of what I mean by that is that we see things like a consumer company, you see that smile of retention, or you see those first kind of inklings that new customers versus personal”

“I mean, it's because sales and marketing is so expensive, regardless of what kind of company you are, you can spend yourself into oblivion if your go-to-market isn't working. And really, I mean, I kind of feel like this is a punt, but really the core of a go-to-market that fits is product market fit. If you aren't selling a product, whether it's to an enterprise, customer, or consumer, that they actually really want, it's just never going to work. And then the way that you position that product and message that product and price that product will actually further inform how well that product will sell inside the market.”

“I mean, I think that the market is more competitive for everyone. I think a long time ago in the 80s and 90s, the venture was a buyer's market, right? There were more companies on their capital. And today I think we have more capital than there are good companies. It's easier than ever to start a company, which is really exciting, but there's more money than ever to invest in them. So I think that it's definitely more competitive. Our jobs are definitely harder. But on the other hand, it's just like, it's such an exciting time because there's so much early stage money that there are so many companies that get to our level, right? There are so many companies to look at. It's really exciting. But yeah, you're totally right. It's completely competitive.”

“Yeah, so that's an early stage firm, right? They will write a small, very early check, but a giant fund, right? And so a firm like that will really go early to late. I think we also see a lot of early stage funds raising either opportunity funds that are kind of dedicated vehicles for their existing portfolio companies, or we see them raising SPVs for specific portfolio companies. So we see early stage funds wanting to take more, really wanting to step up in their winners, right? Because they have the information advantage and invest in where what used to be the late suge sweet spot or what is the late sage sweet spot. What we see late firms doing is moving earlier and earlier so that they can have that information advantage similar to the early stage investors and put capital to work. And a really favorable fundraising environment for most firms. We see everybody's funds getting bigger and everybody has more money to deploy. And so everybody wants to identify what those winning companies are as early as they can and then continue to invest.”

“Know, I think that what we see on the early stage is that fund size is really increasing. I mean, NEA came out today with a $3.3 billion fund. Is that what it was?”
2017-07-12 · The Twenty Minute VC · 20VC: The Blurring of Early & Late Stage, Why Your Go To Market Strategy Is More Important Now Than Ever & Why Venture Is The Academia Of Tech with Roseanne Wincek @ IVP · IDENTIFIED FROM THE TRANSCRIPT · source
“Right, so the amount in follow on rounds goes down. However, this idea of wanting to double down on your winners is true regardless of where you came in. If a company is always going up and to the right, that first round that you invested in is always going to be your best return. You only got to put so many dollars to work at that point, and that price is never going to exist again. And so if you know the company is really good and you've been working with the company for a long time, you're an insider, you have inside information, you want to step up rather regardless if you're the Series A investor or the Series D investor. So I think the underlying principles are really the same, just how the capital gets allocated is slightly different. And a lot of it has to do with fund size. For instance, a lot of early stage investors can't follow on in late rounds. They can't do their parada anymore because they might be tapped out from a fund perspective. Of companies raising $100 million, your pro rata is $20 million. A lot of real estate firms can't do that. Whereas a lot of late stage firms have a lot of capital to put in. And so they'll do super pro rata in that type of ground.”

“Right, exactly. You're not getting diluted as much. And also, I mean, early stage is also more of kind of an ownership model where you want to maintain your ownership, especially in your winners and your high-performing companies, because, right, that's where your returns come from again. That's where you get the capital to plug the holes on the zeros. When it comes down to the core of it, the mindset isn't that different, right? Early stage VCs and late stage VCs are still VCs, and both groups have these long-term funds with committed capital where they can invest in their companies again and again. And that's really, I think that's the core beautiful benefit of venture capital as a source of financing for young companies. And so I think both early stage and late stage investors are really committed in participating and follow-on financings to help the company move along, right? There's a ton of signaling associated with if the early investors invest in their prorata. For late sage investors, that pro rata tends to be a lot smaller, right? Just because they own less of the company, right? If early stage investor owns 20%, the late age investor might own five to three percent.”

“At the early stage, the amount that's reserved for each company is much higher than it is at the late stage. I know early stage funds that were reserved two to four times the initial check for each company, and that is generally dependent on fund size. At the late stage, it's probably about 50 cents on the dollar because a lot of the companies won't need financing past where you are. Either they'll be profitable or be acquired or go public or you won't have the chance to put more money in. Absolutely.”

“I mean, I actually think they're both, right? Early stage is definitely, it's more of an art from kind of how you value the companies and how you pick them and how you choose entrepreneurs, but there actually can be a lot more science because there's more technical risk. And so you actually get compensated as an investor by understanding that. And at the later stage, you know, yes, it's more scientific. You can do more hard analysis based on real numbers, but there's still a ton of art in it, right? Especially when you get to the valuation piece of it. I think you can triangulate, but there's still a lot of gray”

“Is real and it's tenable. And late stage investors, frankly, are kind of bad at giving entrepreneurs credit for what could be. They see that as upside, but really they're very good at understanding what is working and how additional capital or how additional executives or how slight changes in the model can really send that off to the races. And those additional products or that bigger vision is upside. But they're really bad at pricing that. And so I feel like when I first got to IVP, I was bringing like talking about all these kind of like truly mid-stage deals and people weren't getting excited about them. And I realized it was just the way that different types of investors think about companies. And also, I mean, I think, you know, early stage investors, at the early stage, you really think like about a 30 year companies are going to go to zero, 30 year companies are going to return their capital and a third of your companies are going to return your fund.”

“Sure. So I would say the biggest kind of fundamental difference between early and late is the pace of companies. So I remember when I first joined IBP, Jules Maltz said to me, he's like, if I see five companies in a week, like five quality companies a week, I've had a great week. Like, five companies in a week at the early stage, like if you saw five companies a week, you're never going to make it, right? You're seeing eight companies a day because the only way to really understand what's happening is to be meeting with CEOs. Whereas at the late stage, there's fewer companies kind of that get to our stage and there's a lot more data in the market around how those companies are doing and what the trends are. And so you want to kind of spend more of your time understanding the broader market and less of your time just trying to chase down every single meeting. So the pace is really different. Also, you know, the way that early stage and late stage investors kind of think about their companies. Early stage investors are really getting sold on the vision, right? On this idea of this is what we can build. And generally, there are some early traction that points, you know, that this vision”

“Exactly. And I had had a company and I'd been at a company and I knew that not everything was always up and to the right. And I was really frustrated because I felt like I could only invest in companies when the financing market dictated when I could invest, right? There was that one time where the company had enough traction that was interesting, but it was still early enough that I could buy 20% of it for three to five million dollars or more today. And that was frustrating to me, right? I would rather invest when it makes sense when I think the company's kind of at the right stage or when I think that there's an inflection in the model or when the market's really the underlying market, not the financing market is heating up for the company. And so I like that I get to know companies for a long time invest in the timing's right rather than when other VCs tell me it's time to invest.”

“Is better suited to my personality instead of like pipetting and building this crazy laser microscope and writing a bunch of really ugly code to make the thing work. Instead, I got to talk to people all day and get to talk to really smart people who are really excited about things that they're doing and see if their models of the world align with mine. So I ended up joining a firm called Canaan Partners out of the GSB, one of my classmates, Harach Simonian, was also in my class, and he brought me in and Maha Ibrahim and DPEC comrade took a bet on me and decided to hire me at a business school about two and a half years ago. You know, IVP approached me and frankly I had never thought about growth investing. I always think about growth as more like real finance and frankly I've never been a banker. I'm easily the worst banker in growth stage venture capital. But you know when I was in early stage I kind of got frustrated because I felt like you got to see a company once and if you passed you could never do it again whereas at the late stage I get to look at”

“Channels was also September of 2008 around that time, and all of our parents looked at us and said, like, you guys should probably get jobs. So I got a job at a company called NextBio, a enterprise analytics company. And then actually somewhat at one of our board meetings, I think it was one of our investors. I can't actually remember who said to me, he's like, oh, what do you want to do when you grow up? Have you ever thought about venture? And to be quite honest, I never had. You know, I knew venture capitalists. I talked to some angels when I had my company, but I never really knew about their business model or where their money came from or kind of how it worked. And I looked into it and read as much as I could and met some VCs and I really was like, oh my gosh, this is the best job in the world. How do I get this job? And I think it was so appealing to me because, you know, I had really started my career in academia and I really feel like venture is kind of the academia of tech, right? We kind of create all these mental models for how we think the world works and we go and we do experiments to test whether or not they're real. And I think it's just, it's like academia where you do that, but it's kind of the experimentation.”

“Sure. I feel like I had a pretty random walk into Venture. I was actually a chemistry major in undergrad and I absolutely love chemistry. And I had a great undergraduate research career. I didn't know what I wanted to do after college. So I went to graduate school. And I started PhD in biophysics. And about two years into that, I realized I loved thinking about science and talking about science, but I don't really like doing science. The work just wasn't really for me. I felt kind of sad and lonely wrapped up in this lab doing work that maybe 10 people in the whole world cared about. And I went to Berkeley and I lived in San Francisco and tech. This is 2006, 2007. And the tech ecosystem was really starting to come back and seem so exciting. And here I was locked in a lab and everyone's working on more exciting things across the bridge. So I ended up dropping out of graduate school and starting a company where we made crappy Facebook apps. So this is in the days of the Facebook app platform. We made a bunch of Schlocky apps and then Facebook shut down all those customer acquisitions.”
