“Yeah, so the most recent investment that we've announced is a company called Cloud Health. It's based back east. And so it's exactly on that theme of new platforms. CloudHealth lets their customers manage all their spend on cloud technology. So just moving technology out of your data center into the cloud doesn't mean that it's free. And in fact, some of the services are quite expensive. So this lets them see all the different services that they utilize, what their spend is, and optimize that. So we thought that that is an essential part of moving core enterprise businesses to the cloud is the ability to, I just want to manage and control, which is the overarching. Enterprise IT urge.”

“There's no hard and fast rule. So the rule we have in here is money in the ground trumps New Deal. So if you have a portfolio company issue, you owe it to them. It's your fiduciary responsibility as a board member and your existing investors that you've got to allocate your time there, which is part of the reason why we keep the number of boards per person to a manageable level. But it's also just very episodic what your time allocation is, even in normal days. So it depends on if you're doing a major executive search or financing or an M&A transaction, it'll be all hands-on deck around the clock with a portfolio, but as that settles down, you'll spend much more of your time evaluating new opportunities and doing the kind of proactive groundwork that will let you identify new opportunities. Opportunities.”

“Probably the downside is something that's attractive but is difficult, which is that the time management and the constant time slicing. And you have to be very proactive about how you invest your time to look for new opportunities and to help your portfolio companies be their best. And that often means that you have to trade off people you would like to spend time with, but you can't because you have to allocate your time someplace else.”

“I think it is. I mean, the challenge with Twitter is you have to mutually follow each other in order to DM. I think the more thoughtful place to do as sort of a cold outreach is on LinkedIn. But please don't link to link to me just with the canned I'd like to connect with you. But I think a lot of deal flow both on Twitter and LinkedIn where somebody sends a custom paragraph that says why they want to connect with me.”

“Because Oreal makes all kind of mobile apps to help decide what makeup and hair color. You should pick when you're in the store. And so when L'Oreal is really worried about the quality of their software and L'Oreal probably has a hard time competing with Facebook, Google, and Pinterest and everybody else for high quality software developers and quality people and product managers to make decisions about product. So when that presents an enormous opportunity for applause and for a whole bunch of other younger software companies in our portfolio when a company like L'Oreal has to become a major software developer and consumer of all kinds of developer services. We think that's a huge theme that will create a lot of wealth and on the basis of all this technology. Technology disruption.”

“About the way software interacts either on a mobile device or also over the air to the back end. And so lots of new things have to be invented in there and lots of new things are possible because of the device that the end user is using. I think about it. I have a portfolio company called Applause. It's actually based in Boston outside of Silicon Valley. They provide Software and services that help their customers create the highest level quality applications because in this world also consumers can rate and review applications and so no longer you can no longer have a website and snipe it as beta and expect your customers to find your bugs if you deliver a poorly finished mobile app and it gets a couple of one-star reviews. The app store, nobody else is going to download it. So that company Applause has people.”

“Yeah, so I think the whole when you think about what has caused the bubbles, the big peaks in Vendrico returns are 100% correlated with shifts in platform technology. So the mini computer PC web and now you have mobile. So the whole theme of the development stack being up for grabs because every application has to be refashioned for a mobile experience, both all the back end and then all the front end. And this is aligned with that whole idea of software eating the world. But the mobile developer space is very fundamental because so much is different.”

“With content marketing, for example, the same way a lot of technologies companies compete now, right? That's why you're seeing blogs and Twitter followers and things like that be important. Who has a point of view, right? So entrepreneurs should be making lists, you know, lead lists, winnowing them down, keeping notes, and having meetings, even if it's a 20 minute update call of times a year with the firms who they think might be the right firms to invest in their company, you know one or two rounds from now. So you should have a point of view of how you want to build your board, build your investor base ahead of time.”

“And that's not uncommon for us and our portfolio companies. And we think it's a great practice for entrepreneurs to say, so you want to say who are the firms that invest in my sector, right? Who has experience driving success in other analogous companies? And from my portfolio companies, I often say, you know, let's make a list of who's been in this space before us, who's had success here, who's in a geography where we want to diversify. So if it's an East Coast company starting, they might want to add a West Coast VC in a series B or vice versa, who has context in this vertical or this field. And then who's known to be good? So this is where VCs have to compete.”

“So you start that's the way we think about fundraising for our fund because we don't want to ask somebody for a $20 million check to invest in scale vendor partners on the first meeting. So we typically know our LPs for two or three cycles before they decide to invest in us.”

“Yeah, so it depends. So I think entrepreneurs should think about raising capital and selecting an investment partner very much, you know, it's a process very much like your first few strategic sales or your strategic executive hires, which is number one, you want to friendraise before you fundraise.”

“Broader range of investments in each investment professional can follow more deals because having a board seat is a big time commitment. What we're saying is we want to be involved. We're going to help you recruit. We're going to help you make strategic decisions. You run the company, right? We don't get involved. We're not going to try to take over your job, but we're going to be there by your side to help guide the company. entrepreneurs who want that from their investors choose us and entrepreneurs who don't want that don't choose us”

“That is working, yet they're still fledgling companies. They might be doing $100,000 or a couple hundred thousand dollars a month in revenue. It's still a very small business. And what we have to offer them is experience with dozens and dozens of companies at about that same size in related industries because we're betting on a few big technology trends. So it's not a one of each very broad startup portfolio. It's fairly concentrated on, like I said, these big themes. And we take a specific cultural approach to how do we work with our companies. Even just that statement, we have a board seat in every one of our companies says, we're not passive kind of people. There are venture firms whose strategy is explicitly not to take board seats so that they can make a much”

“And so as a CEO, you're hiring your boss, but your boss has a permanent contractual right to be your boss, unlike most other hiring situations where the CEO is in charge. So finding a venture capital partner who has the right set of experience and is a really strong culture fit with you and the company is very important. And those things are not commodities. People are very singular. Person to person and also firm to firm. So for example, what the companies that come to Scale Venture Partners are looking for is they're looking for a deep body of expertise building companies early in the scaling phase. That's where we focus the companies that have achieved product market fit, achieved a channel to market.”

“You know, it is very hard to make the growth rate of anything from less than one Something that in a year or two you feel like this company is going to be worth that much. So to make money in this environment, you have to be disciplined, but you aren't going to make any money not making any investments either. So we're really looking for companies that are on important fundamental trends with extraordinary growth rates where you feel like they'll grow into their valuation relatively quickly. And in the end, it's going to be a big company and a technology space that matters and the valuation might fluctuate in the first couple of years of your holding period, but what you're really looking for is in five to seven years, is this company really going to matter? Do I really want to own this company? And then you'll feel good about how much you pay for it.”

“The way we think about it is prices are higher, you know, sort of relative valuation, valuation relative to current run rate revenue is higher than we'd like to see right now. But the companies that we're investing in for the past couple of years have on average achieved 182% growth in the year after we've invested, which means If you pay a little bit too much for the company, within six months or nine months they've grown into that valuation. So the period of risk of being completely crazy, the period of risk of having pricing risk is relatively constrained. But if you're investing in really, we passed on deal last week, very early stage company. They sell to businesses. They have less than a million dollars in revenue. They're going to raise a new series of investment at about 100 million pre. was something that we just”

“It went public in 99. So now you're seeing not speaking about consumer companies that have no revenue and have multi-billion dollar valuations. That's the harder to justify. But when you look at B2B companies that are being valued at 10 times revenue, but they're growing at 100 to 200% year on year with a subscription style business model, the revenue base is much more durable. The growth is extraordinary. The interest rate environment is extremely low, so which makes growth very, very attractive to investors. So yes, prices are high now, but companies do have fundamental traction and they're being valued on that growth and”

“That fundamental growth became highly overvalued. So just as an example, I said earlier I was officer of a public company in Bubble 1.0. That company went public with a $4 billion market cap in $800,000 in trailing revenue. That equals bubble.”

“Yet it's definitely possible to make money because part of what's driving the extraordinary valuations is actually extraordinary performance by some of these companies. I mean, some of it is disconnected from reality. Yet most of it, I would say, especially when you get into enterprise space, is driven by real traction with the companies and real revenue. And that's driven by massive technology disruptions that are happening right now. For example, 1994, I think, was the last year that the last Fortune 500 company got its domain name and got on the web. That spurred on five years of extraordinary IT spending of companies getting web-enabled and coincidentally also Y2K retooling. So you had this huge spend on New IT platforms.”

“So in the earlier days of a startup outside of the valley, probably prices are a little bit lower for them, right? Because there aren't as many VCs in your local market and there aren't as many VCs who are willing to fly to your local market. But as the companies scale, the companies get valued on their potential market size and on their current traction and success. So I think it all become, you know, it all kind of becomes equalized as the company scales, but those early seed rounds are harder to get financed for first-time entrepreneurs in secondary markets.”

“Either the pickings are a little bit slimmer in the local market, so you really have to know your pipeline of talent and have recruited far in advance, or you have to be able to attract someone to move from wherever they are to your location. So I think the CEOs who run those companies outside of Silicon Valley have to be even more focused on the talent pipeline and always kind of always be recruiting. This is something I write about in a lot of my blog posts. Because it's people who make things happen in a startup. And so you always have to know who your next hire is and have him or her on speed dial as soon as the budget opens up.”

“Is for companies that are outside of Silicon Valley is to be some place where they have access to extraordinary talent. One of the really great things about being in Northern California is just how many people there are who have had the experience of building a startup, scaling a business. And so if a company is here and it comes time to get the next level experienced”

“Yeah, so startups definitely can be successful outside the valley. It's one of the strengths, I think, of scale venture partners, even though we're a single location firm. So we have one office here in Silicon Valley. We have startups in 18 different states in the US, and we've backed companies that have gotten started in other countries and raised capital to come scale in the US. So our investment strategy is purely US focused. We don't invest in local market companies for local markets. But Silicon Valley has no monopoly on smart people and good ideas, and a lot of times the customers for new ideas are outside of Silicon Valley. So a lot of innovation happens in other regions. I think one of the challenges”

“In general, men tend to be more self-confident anyway and to deem themselves qualified for the next job, even if they have only, say, three quarters of the qualifications where women are really looking to check every box before they raise their hand for a different role. And so having the managers and the recruiters understand that implicit bias and take steps within the companies to try to remove it or mitigate it is very important. And that's actually spawning a whole new software category of HR software that sort of strips away the name and the gender of candidates and helps hiring managers and HR managers look at the actual talent and make decisions without knowing the gender and that statistically Generates a much more diverse pool of candidates and promotion candidates.”

“And then the awareness of implicit bias in the management and promotion path is also incredibly important. There was a lot of research released maybe a month and a half ago or so about the language used in performance reviews of men and women and how starkly different they are. So this was a very broad-based study with hundreds of thousands of data points. And in general, women were dinged for the very same things that men were encouraged about. And with the same amount of experience, women were deemed to be not qualified to move to the same level and men were ironically encouraged to lean in and ask for the promotion.”

“Can look not just for the BSCS, but for specific coursework that has women qualified to work as engineers. They can employ interview and sourcing and evaluation techniques that can help remove or mitigate implicit bias. So doing things like blind, like the blind auditions in the voice or what helped change the ratio in, for example, orchestras where orchestras used to be 100% men and the people making the judgments about new musicians believed men were better. They moved to having the auditions take place behind a screen where you couldn't see the musician. And that dramatically changed. The ratio of women represented in orchestras. And so the same thing can happen with coding challenges and other kind of techniques to identify strong candidates where you don't know what her name is, right?”

“So, part of it is that increasing the supply. And one of the, there are many more women who are qualified to work in industry as developers than there are in the percentage who graduate with a computer science degree, strictly speaking. So for example numerous, so women tend to be a majority of the graduates both at the undergraduate and the graduate level in wet sciences, in the biological sciences. Many of those women now are capable computer scientists as well, right? But they may not have a resume that has computer science as part of their degree, but actually programming and big data analytics have become cutting-edge part of many other scientific disciplines now. So number one is companies.”

“Yeah, and software is kind of coding the experience that we have with so many different aspects of life now, right? Our automobiles, our home appliances, you know, how we experience media, how we buy makeup, all kinds of things. You're having a software experience in industries that are far afield from core technology products. And so you need people making the design decisions and the product trade-offs who represent the customer base there. And so if you only have young men making the software across all those different fields, then something is going to have a mismatch with the customer base.”

“software business and particularly the gamer culture turned off a lot of women from becoming computer programmers where when it was a mainframe era and it was highly collaborative, it was actually very heavily weighted towards women. So even the enigma code breakers were largely women bludgeley park was, I believe, even majority female. So in the early days of computer science, it was very high representation of women. And so the industry is trying to bring back sort of the collaborative culture that is more hospitable to women and bring these other diverse points of view into the industry because just zooming out if you buy into Mark Andreessen's Quote, software is eating the world.”

“I believe in venture capital that the numbers show the ratio has been quite steady, which is to say it hasn't gone up, but it hasn't gone down. I mean, there were a handful of notable female venture capital partners in the early days, and there are some now, but it's actually only 4.6% of general partners are female. In the tech industry, the ratio has actually declined quite precipitously for women in engineering roles. So in the mid-80s, at the beginning of the computer science discipline, more than 30% of the people who graduated with a computer science degree were female. And the current run rate is about 18.8%. “Women are proven to be stronger investors. In general, we trade less often and take better calibrated risk. If you look at the academic research. And so you want to get more women into both of those environments, which involves both increasing the supply and sort of flow through at the entry levels, but then also both, again, in tech and BC, looking at really the retention and promotion policies and practices so that the people that you bring in in the entry level actually make it to the top. And one of the challenges in the venture business is it's, you know, I mean, the promotion cycle is quite lengthy, right? Really major personnel changes happen on fund life cycles. So every three or four years as opposed to industry where it's every maybe 12 or”

“About what a successful candidate would look like. And for the people who've been here who are largely white males, they think of the people who've been successful, who are largely white males. We even in technology use Guy as the sort of standard gender-neutral pronoun. And those kind of mental shortcuts introduce an implicit bias that makes it more difficult to conceive of having a woman in the role and for women or people of color more difficult for them to conceive of being successful in the role. So I think both the technology business and the venture capital business have become acutely aware of this issue in part because the demand for talent is extreme. Yet, there's a very large percentage of the population that's not being effectively reached in the technology business. And when you get into the venture business, as you said,”

“Yes, so Scaled Venture Partners has three female partners, which is, I am sorry to say, the most in the US of any firm that has more than 200 million dollars under management. And I think part of the reason why we've been successful having a fairly diverse partnership and indeed throughout the organization here is because we started that way. And the existence proof of success both to candidates who come from diverse backgrounds, as well as from the existing employees, is a very important part of changing the ratio toward a more diverse workforce. So in both tech and venture capital, there's a lot of shorthand for what that often is referred to as pattern matter.”

And sitting at my desk one day, I got a phone call from a recruiter calling on behalf of a venture fund that had backed a startup, a successful startup I had been in, wanting to speak to me about joining their firm as a partner. And that sparked the idea of venture capital. And the thing I love about venture capital is it lets me put together those two things, the kind of big picture where the markets going, where is a great trend that we should be investing behind, and the relatively hands-on how do we build a winner startup here attract great talent, you know, position the product in the market.
