  1. Neither shareholders nor venture capitalists. Same thing with a company whose story you are about to hear, because EO products is, in a way, the opposite of scale. Brad and Susan Griffin Black have never taken an eventure money, and they never had much money of their own, so the story of EO products is a story of a slow burn, nearly thirty years of building up a brand one product at a time, fighting for every store, and eventually and sustainably growing into one of the most recognized natural bodycare brands in the US. Today the company does about $50 million in revenue a year, but 30 years ago, when she started the company, Susan Griffin Black was a single mom raising her son in San Francisco. But that's not the most amazing thing about this story. The company itself was barely scraping by for its first fifteen years.

Think Ivan Chenard of Patagonia, or Seth Tibbet of Tofurki, or Kim Jordan of New Belgium Brewery. All of those companies are independently owned, beholden to

  4. So, the meeting that we went to with the new buyer, the first meeting, I think I was nursing. I remember being in that room, having a baby, and just presenting. This woman was, I don't know, in her late 20s, and she was not responding to anything that we were saying in a positive manner. So it was a hard meeting. And without them, we were sunk.
