“My father at the beginning was after the first year and I'd had quite a few hit records and I bought this new jaguar and I drove to Ponty Freed to show my parents my new car and my mother started cutting sandwiches from my father. And he said, Well, I'm going to work tonight. I said, You can't go to work tonight. I'm a coal miner, that's what I do. I said, Dad, please. I mean, you know, I'm making all this money now. You know, I don't want to think about you in a coal mine and he said, Yeah, but you know, how long is this thing going to last with you? You know, who knows? You know, he was really thinking about it, and he was fifty seven then. And I said How much money do you think you're going to make from now till you're sixty five? “It's not unusual So Gordon Mills wrote it, and Lesre had helped him with it. Gordon said I have this song that Les Reed has been commissioned by Sandy Shaw's manager to write her next single. And she'd already had like two number ones or something. And he sang it to me in the car. So I said, right, okay, okay, okay, I got it. And I sang it. And when I heard it back I thought my God this is a hit song here. And Gordon said not for you. You don't want this. It's a pop song. And I said Gordon this to me sounds like a hit song. And I lived close to a hill, a Welsh hill, you know, all terrace houses And I would see the cadet wave to me as I came past my friends, you know. “Yeah,'cause it was a tin bath. We didn't have a bathroom, you see. So'cause the bath was so small he would have to kneel on the floor first of all and take a shirt off and wash his top half as he used to call it. And then when he had done that he would then stand in the bath and wash his bottom off, and he would shout for my mother to come and scrub his back. My mother's name was Frida, so I remember Frida You don't get in here and scrub my back and if they'd had a row, my mother would say Get in there and wash your father's back.
